Psalm 113

Hallelujah, God helps weak people[a]

113 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Servants of the Lord, praise him!
Praise the name of the Lord!
Everyone should praise the Lord
    now and for ever!
The Lord deserves that people praise him,
from where the sun rises in the east,
to where it goes down in the west.
The Lord rules over all nations.
His glory is great
    higher than the heavens!
There is nobody like the Lord our God.
He sits on his throne high above us.
He bends down to look below,
at the sky and the earth.
He lifts poor people out of the dirt.
And he lifts up weak people from the ashes.
He gives them a seat with princes,
the princes who rule his own people.
He makes the wife who cannot give birth
into a happy mother of children.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Psalm 115

There is only one true God[a]

115 Lord, you are the one
who deserves that people praise you.
They should praise only you, not us!
Because you love us with a faithful love,
and you always do what you have promised.
Why should other nations say about us,
    ‘Where is their God?’
We know that our God is in heaven.
He does whatever he wants to do.
Those people's idols are made from silver and gold.
    Yes, human hands make them!
Each idol has a mouth,
    but it cannot speak!
It has eyes, but it cannot see!
It has ears, but it cannot hear!
It has a nose, but it cannot smell!
It has hands, but it cannot feel anything!
It has feet, but it cannot walk!
They cannot make a sound!
The people that make those idols
    will become useless like them.
The same is true for everyone
who trusts their idols to help them.
People of Israel,
    trust in the Lord.
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
10 Aaron's family,
    trust in the Lord.[b]
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
11 Everyone who serves the Lord,
    trust in the Lord.
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
12 The Lord will remember us,
    and he will bless us.
He will bless Israel's people.
He will bless Aaron's family.
13 He will bless everybody who serves him,
whether they are important people or not.
14 I pray that the Lord will give you many children,
    and your children too!
15 I pray that the Lord will bless you all.
He is the one who made the whole universe.
16 The heavens belong to the Lord,
but he has given the earth to us people.
17 Dead people cannot praise the Lord.
In their graves, they are unable to speak.
18 But we will praise the Lord,
    now and for ever.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah praises the Lord

Hannah prayed and she said,

‘I am very happy when I think about what the Lord has done.
The Lord has made me very strong.
I can laugh at my enemies because you, Lord, have saved me.
That makes me very happy.
Nobody else is holy like the Lord.
There is no other God except you, our God.
You are the only Rock where we can be safe.[a]
Do not boast or speak proud words!
The Lord is a God who knows everything.
He judges everything that people do.
The weapons of brave soldiers may break.
But weak people who fall become strong again.
People who had plenty of food to eat have to work for it now.
But the people who were hungry have enough food now.
Women who could not have any children have now given birth to seven children.
But those who had many children are now alone.
The Lord gives both life and death.
He sends some people to their graves,
and he raises other people up.
The Lord makes some people poor
and he makes other people rich.
He causes some people to be important
and he puts other people low down.
He raises up weak people from the ground.
He lifts poor people up out of the dirt.
He makes them become friends of princes.
He puts them in places of honour.
The deep places of the earth belong to the Lord.
He built the world on a strong foundation.
He takes care of his faithful people.
But he puts wicked people in a dark place where they can do nothing.
It is not a person's own strength that makes him great.
10 The Lord will destroy his enemies.
He will shout against them from heaven like loud thunder.
The Lord will judge everyone on earth.
He will make his king strong.
He will give power to the king that he has chosen to rule.’

John 2:1-12

The marriage at Cana

Two days after that, there was a marriage party. It was in the town of Cana, in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there. People had asked Jesus and his disciples to come to the party too. When people had drunk all the wine, Jesus' mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’ Jesus replied, ‘Woman, why do you tell me this? It is not my time yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you to do.’

There were six big pots there. People had used stone to make them. Each pot could contain about 100 litres of water. The water was there so that the Jews could wash themselves in the way that their special rules taught. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the pots with water.’ So they filled the pots to the top. Then he said, ‘Now take some of the water from the pots and give it to the master of the party.’ So they did that. The master of the party tasted the water. The water had now become wine! The master did not know where the wine had come from. But the servants who had given it to him knew about it. Then the master asked the new husband to come to him. 10 The master said to him, ‘Everyone else brings out the best wine first. When people have had plenty to drink, then they give people cheaper wine. But you are different. You have kept the best wine until now.’

11 Jesus did this first miracle at Cana, in Galilee. In this way, Jesus showed how great and powerful he was. And his disciples believed in him.

Jesus goes to the temple

12 After this, Jesus went to a town called Capernaum. His mother, his brothers and his disciples went with him. They stayed there for a few days.[a]

Psalm 45

This is a special song that the sons of Korah wrote for the music leader. Sing it to the music that they call ‘Lilies.’

A love song[a]

45 This beautiful song makes my heart very happy.
I will sing this special poem to the king.
My voice is ready to sing it very well,
as well as a clever writer can write with a pen.

You are the most handsome man that there is.
You speak kind words in a beautiful way.
And so God will continue to bless you for ever.
Brave soldier, wear your sword at your side!
Show what a great king you are!
Wear your royal clothes
and ride out to win against your enemies!
Win the war on behalf of truth and justice!
Then your strong right hand will do powerful things!
Your sharp arrows will cut into the heart of your enemies.
Nations will fall down under your feet.
God, you will continue to rule as king
    always and for ever.
Your authority as king will bring justice to your people.
You love people to do what is right,
and you hate anything that is evil.
So God, your God, has chosen you
to be greater than all your people.
He has put special olive oil on you,
    to make you happy.
All your clothes have the beautiful smell
    of myrrh, aloes and cassia.
You hear the music of stringed instruments
    that comes from beautiful palaces.
That makes you happy.
The daughters of kings are among your visitors.
Your royal bride stands at your right hand.
She is wearing gold from Ophir.

10 Royal daughter, listen to me.
Listen carefully to what I am saying.
Forget your people and your family.
11 You are very beautiful
and the king will want to be with you.
He is your master, so respect him.
12 Rich people will come from Tyre to give gifts to you.
They will want you to help them.

13 The king's bride is in the palace,
    and she looks beautiful!
Her dress has gold threads in it.[b]
14 Now they lead her to the king in her beautiful clothes.
Her young friends follow after her
to bring her to the king.
15 They are very happy as they walk together
and they go into the king's palace.

16 You will have sons to become kings,
as your ancestors were kings before you.
You will make them princes
to rule over all the land.
17 In future years I will cause people to remember
that you are a great king!
Then people will praise you always and for ever.

Psalm 138

David wrote this song.

Thank God for who he is

138 I will thank you, Lord, with my whole being.
I will sing and praise you in front of the gods.[a]
I look towards your holy temple,
and I bend down to worship you.
I thank you for who you are.
You love your people and they can always trust you.
You are more famous than anyone,
because you always do what you promise.
When I prayed to you, you answered me.
You made me brave and strong.
All the kings in the world will thank you, Lord,
when they hear the promises that you have made.
They will sing about the things that you have done,
because they see that you are great, Lord.
Yes, the Lord is high above the earth.
But he takes care of humble people.
He also knows what proud people are doing,
even if they try to hide.[b]
When there is danger all round me,
you help me to be strong.
When my enemy is angry, you fight against him.
You save me with your strong right hand.[c]
The Lord stands with me to do what he has promised.
Yes, Lord, your faithful love will always continue.
You have made us who we are,
so do not leave us now!

Psalm 149

The 4th Hallelujah Psalm

149 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Sing a new song to worship the Lord.
When his own people meet together,
    they should praise him.
People of Israel, be very happy,
    because God made you.
People of Zion, be very happy,
    because God is your king.
Yes, dance to praise the name of the Lord.
Take your harps and tambourines
and make music to praise him with your songs.
When the Lord's people serve him,
    it makes him happy.
He is happy to help humble people,
    so that people respect them.
The people who belong to God should be very happy,
because he has made them great.
They should always sing with joy,
even when they lie on their beds at night.
They should shout aloud to praise God,
while they hold sharp swords in their hands.
That is how they must fight against other nations,
to punish them for their sins.
They must tie up the foreign kings with chains,
and put the rulers in prison.
They must do that to punish their enemies
in the way that is right.
That is how God will cause his people to become great.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

John 19:23-27

23 After the soldiers had put Jesus on the cross, they took his clothes. They made them into four parts, one part for each soldier. They also took his long shirt, which was one single piece of cloth. 24 So they said to each other, ‘We will not tear it. Instead, we will play a game with dice. The person who wins the game will have the shirt.’ This happened in the way that the Bible had already said:

‘Each of them took some of my clothes.
They played a game with dice to win what I was wearing.’
And that is what the soldiers did.[a]

25 Some women stood near to Jesus while he was on the cross. They were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary from Magdala. 26 Jesus saw his mother there. He also saw the disciple that he loved. That disciple was standing there, near Jesus' mother. So Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, look! There is your son.’ 27 Then he said to the disciple, ‘Look! There is your mother.’ From that time, the disciple took Jesus' mother to live in his own home.
