Psalm 95

95 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord.
Let us give a loud shout to the Rock who saves us.
Let us come to him and give him thanks.
Let us praise him with music and song.

The Lord is the great God.
    He is the greatest King.
He rules over all the gods.
He owns the deepest parts of the earth.
The mountain peaks belong to him.
The ocean is his, because he made it.
He formed the dry land with his hands.

Come, let us bow down and worship him.
Let us fall on our knees in front of the Lord our Maker.
He is our God.
We are the sheep belonging to his flock.
We are the people he takes good care of.

If only you would listen to his voice today.
He says, “Don’t be stubborn as you were at Meribah.
Don’t be stubborn as you were that day at Massah in the desert.
There your people of long ago really tested me.
They did it even though they had seen what I had done for them.
10 For 40 years I was angry with them.
I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray.
They do not know how I want them to live.’
11 So when I was angry, I made a promise.
I said, ‘They will never enjoy the rest I planned for them.’ ”

Psalm 88

For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

88 Lord, you are the God who saves me.
Day and night I cry out to you.
Please hear my prayer.
Pay attention to my cry for help.

I have so many troubles
    I’m about to die.
People think my life is over.
I’m like someone who doesn’t have any strength.
People treat me as if I were dead.
I’m like those who have been killed and are now in the grave.
You don’t even remember them anymore.
They are cut off from your care.

It’s as if you have put me deep down in the grave.
It’s as if you have put me in that deep, dark place.
Your great anger lies heavy on me.
All the waves of your anger have crashed over me.
You have taken my closest friends away from me.
You have made me sickening to them.
I feel trapped and can’t escape.
I’m crying so much I can’t see very well.

Lord, I call out to you every day.
I lift up my hands to you in prayer.
10 Do you do wonderful things for those who are dead?
Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
11 Do those who are dead speak about your love?
Do those who are in the grave tell how faithful you are?
12 Are your wonderful deeds known in that dark place?
Are your holy acts known in that land where the dead are forgotten?

13 Lord, I cry out to you for help.
In the morning I pray to you.
14 Lord, why do you say no to me?
Why do you turn your face away from me?

15 I’ve been in pain ever since I was young.
    I’ve been close to death.
You have made me suffer terrible things.
    I have lost all hope.
16 Your great anger has swept over me.
    Your terrors have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood.
They have closed in all around me.
18 You have taken my friends and neighbors away from me.
    Darkness is my closest friend.

Psalm 27

A psalm of David.

27 The Lord is my light, and he saves me.
    Why should I fear anyone?
The Lord is my place of safety.
    Why should I be afraid?
My enemies are evil.
    They will trip and fall
when they attack me
and try to swallow me up.
Even if an army attacks me,
my heart will not be afraid.
Even if war breaks out against me,
I will still trust in God.

I’m asking the Lord for only one thing.
    Here is what I want.
I want to live in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life.
I want to look at the beauty of the Lord.
I want to worship him in his temple.
When I’m in trouble,
he will keep me safe in his house.
He will hide me in the safety of his holy tent.
He will put me on a rock that is very high.
Then I will win the battle
over my enemies who are all around me.
At his holy tent I will offer my sacrifice with shouts of joy.
I will sing and make music to the Lord.

Lord, hear my voice when I call out to you.
Treat me with kindness and answer me.
My heart says, “Seek him!”
    Lord, I will seek you.
Don’t turn your face away from me.
Don’t turn me away because you are angry.
    You have helped me.
God my Savior, don’t say no to me.
    Don’t desert me.
10 My father and mother may desert me,
but the Lord will accept me.
11 Lord, teach me your ways.
Lead me along a straight path.
There are many people who treat me badly.
12 My enemies want to harm me. So don’t turn me over to them.
Witnesses who tell lies are rising up against me.
They say all sorts of evil things about me.

13 Here is something I am still sure of.
I will see the Lord’s goodness
    while I’m still alive.
14 Wait for the Lord.
Be strong and don’t lose hope.
    Wait for the Lord.

Lamentations 3:37-58

37 Suppose people order something to happen.
It won’t happen unless the Lord has planned it.
38 Troubles and good things alike come to people
because the Most High God has commanded them to come.
39 A person who is still alive shouldn’t blame God
when God punishes them for their sins.

40 Let’s take a good look at the way we’re living.
    Let’s return to the Lord.
41 Let’s lift up our hands to God in heaven.
Let’s pray to him with all our hearts.
42 Let’s say, “We have sinned.
    We’ve refused to obey you.
    And you haven’t forgiven us.

43 “You have covered yourself with the cloud of your anger.
    You have chased us.
You have killed us without pity.
44 You have covered yourself with the cloud of your anger.
Our prayers can’t get through to you.
45 You have made us become like trash and garbage
    among the nations.

46 “All our enemies have opened their mouths wide
    to swallow us up.
47 We are terrified and trapped.
    We are broken and destroyed.”
48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes.
That’s because my people are destroyed.

49 Tears will never stop flowing from my eyes.
My eyes can’t get any rest.
50 I’ll weep until the Lord looks down from heaven.
I’ll cry until he notices my tears.
51 What I see brings pain to my spirit.
All the women of my city are mourning.

52 Those who were my enemies for no reason at all
hunted me down as if I were a bird.
53 They tried to end my life
by throwing me into a deep pit.
They threw stones down at me.
54 The water rose and covered my head.
I thought I was going to die.

55 Lord, I called out to you.
I called out from the bottom of the pit.
56 I prayed, “Please don’t close your ears
    to my cry for help.”
    And you heard my appeal.
57 You came near when I called out to you.
You said, “Do not be afraid.”

58 Lord, you stood up for me in court.
You saved my life and set me free.

Hebrews 4

God’s People Enter His Sabbath Rest

God’s promise of enjoying his rest still stands. So be careful that none of you fails to receive it. The good news was announced to our people of long ago. It has also been preached to us. The message they heard didn’t have any value for them. That’s because they didn’t share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enjoy that rest. God said,

“When I was angry, I made a promise.
I said, ‘They will never enjoy the rest I planned for them.’ ” (Psalm 95:11)

Ever since God created the world, his works have been finished. Somewhere he spoke about the seventh day. He said, “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” (Genesis 2:2) In the part of Scripture I talked about earlier God spoke. He said, “They will never enjoy the rest I planned for them.” (Psalm 95:11)

It is still true that some people will enjoy this rest. But those who had the good news announced to them earlier didn’t go in. That’s because they didn’t obey. So God again chose a certain day. He named it Today. He did this when he spoke through David a long time later. Here is what was written in the Scripture already given.

“Listen to his voice today.
If you hear it, don’t be stubborn.” (Psalm 95:7,8)

Suppose Joshua had given them rest. If he had, God would not have spoken later about another day. So there is still a Sabbath rest for God’s people. 10 God rested from his work. Those who enjoy God’s rest also rest from their works. 11 So let us make every effort to enjoy that rest. Then no one will die by disobeying as they did.

12 The word of God is alive and active. It is sharper than any sword that has two edges. It cuts deep enough to separate soul from spirit. It can separate bones from joints. It judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart. 13 Nothing God created is hidden from him. His eyes see everything. He will hold us responsible for everything we do.

Jesus Is the Great High Priest

14 We have a great high priest. He has gone up into heaven. He is Jesus the Son of God. So let us hold firmly to what we say we believe. 15 We have a high priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin. 16 So let us boldly approach God’s throne of grace. Then we will receive mercy. We will find grace to help us when we need it.

Romans 8:1-11

The Holy Spirit Gives Life

Those who belong to Christ Jesus are no longer under God’s judgment. Because of what Christ Jesus has done, you are free. You are now controlled by the law of the Holy Spirit who gives you life. The law of the Spirit frees you from the law of sin that brings death. The written law was made weak by the power of sin. But God did what the written law could not do. He made his Son to be like those who live under the power of sin. God sent him to be an offering for sin. Jesus suffered God’s judgment against our sin. Jesus does for us everything the holy law requires. The power of sin should no longer control the way we live. The Holy Spirit should control the way we live.

So don’t live under the control of sin. If you do, you will think about what sin wants. Live under the control of the Holy Spirit. If you do, you will think about what the Spirit wants. The thoughts of a person ruled by sin bring death. But the mind ruled by the Spirit brings life and peace. The mind ruled by the power of sin is at war with God. It does not obey God’s law. It can’t. Those who are under the power of sin can’t please God.

But you are not ruled by the power of sin. Instead, the Holy Spirit rules over you. This is true if the Spirit of God lives in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ. 10 If Christ lives in you, you will live. Though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life. The Spirit does this because you have been made right with God. 11 The Spirit of the God who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you. So the God who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your bodies. He will do this because of his Spirit who lives in you.
