Psalm 83

This psalm is a song that Asaph wrote.

Israel's enemies

83 God, do not continue to be silent!
    Do not remain quiet.
Please do something!
Look! Your enemies are causing trouble.
The people who hate you are ready to attack.
They decide carefully how they will attack your people.
They want to hurt the people that you love.
They say, ‘Come now! We will destroy them.
They will no longer be a nation.
Nobody will remember the name of Israel any more.’
They agree together what they will do.
They join one another to fight against you.
Those enemies are Edomites and Ishmaelites,
    Moabites and Hagrites.
They also come from Gebal, Ammon and Amalek,
    Philistia and Tyre.
Even the Assyrian army has joined with them.
They have given strength to Lot's descendants,
    the Moabites and the Ammonites.
Selah.
God, punish them as you punished Midian.
Do what you did to Sisera and Jabin at the River Kishon.[a]
10 You destroyed them at Endor.
Their bodies remained on the ground, like dirt.
11 Do to their leaders
what you did to Oreb and Zeeb.
Let their rulers die,
    like Zebah and Zalmunna.[b]
12 Those people said,
‘Let us take God's valuable country for ourselves!’
13 God, blow them away like dust,
like chaff that blows away in the wind!
14 Go after them,
like a fire that burns both forest and mountains.
15 Chase them away with your storms.
Frighten them with your strong winds.
16 Cause them to be very ashamed, Lord,
so that they might turn to you.
17 May they always be ashamed and frightened.
    Let them die with shame![c]
18 Then they will understand that you are the Lord.
They will know that you are the Most High God
who rules over all the earth.

Psalm 146-147

The 1st Hallelujah Psalm[a]

146 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
I will praise the Lord through all my life.
While I am alive, I will always sing to praise my God.
Do not trust in human leaders.
    No human can save you.
When they die, they return to the ground.
On that day, their plans come to an end.
The person who knows that the God of Jacob will help him is a happy person![b]
If he trusts in the Lord as his God, he is happy.
The Lord made the skies, the earth and the sea.
He also made everything that is in them.
He always does what he has promised to do.
He helps poor people to receive justice.
He gives food to the hungry.
He makes people that are in a prison go free.
The Lord makes blind people see again.
The Lord lifts up people who have fallen down.
The Lord loves people who are righteous.
The Lord takes care of strangers who live among us.
He helps widows and children who have no family.
But he stops wicked people doing what they want.
10 The Lord will rule as king for ever!
Zion's people, he will always be your God
    and your descendants' God.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

The 2nd Hallelujah Psalm

147 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
It is good to sing to praise our God!
Yes, it is right to praise him and it makes us happy.
The Lord is building Jerusalem again.
He is bringing home the Israelite exiles.
He makes people who are very sad well again.[c]
He helps their wounds to get better.
He decided how many stars there should be in the sky.
He has given a name to each of them.
Our Lord is great and very powerful.
    He understands everything!
The Lord gives help to poor people,
but he knocks down wicked people to the ground.
Offer a song to the Lord,
to thank him for what he has done.
Make music with a harp
    to praise our God.
He fills the sky with clouds.
He sends rain to make the earth wet.
He causes grass to grow on the hills.
He gives food for the animals to eat.
He feeds the young ravens when they cry.[d]
10 If a horse is very strong,
    that does not please him.
If a soldier is brave,
that does not make him happy.
11 Who does make the Lord happy?
People who respect him and serve him well.
People who trust him because they know he loves them.
12 Jerusalem's people, praise the Lord!
Yes, Zion's people, praise your God![e]
13 Praise him because he makes your city's gates strong.
He blesses the people who live there.
14 He causes your borders to be safe from your enemies.
He gives you lots of the best wheat to eat.
15 He sends his commands to reach all the earth.
Very soon the whole world knows what he wants.
16 He covers the earth with snow,
    like a white blanket.
He puts white frost everywhere,
like ashes that the wind blows.
17 He throws hail from the sky,
    like small stones.
When he sends a cold wind,
    nobody can continue to stand.
18 Then he commands it all to melt.
He makes the warm wind blow,
and the ice becomes streams of water.
19 He sends his message to Jacob's descendants.
He gives his rules and laws to Israel's people.[f]
20 He has not done that for any other nation.
They do not know his laws.[g]
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Psalm 85-86

The sons of Korah wrote this psalm for the music leader.

A prayer for peace[a]

85 Lord, you have blessed your land.
You have made Jacob's descendants strong again.[b]
You forgave your people's sins.
    You took away their guilt.
Selah
You stopped being so angry with them.
You did not punish them any more.
But now turn back to us,
and make us strong again, God.
You are the one who rescues us.
Please stop being angry with us.
Will you continue to be angry with us for ever?
Will you be angry with our children too?
Please turn back to us
    and give us new life!
Then your people will be happy
    and they will praise you.
Lord, show us again your faithful love!
    Please rescue us!

Now I will listen to what the Lord God says.
He will give peace to his people,
    to those who serve him.
But they must not turn back
    to do foolish things again.
Yes, God will soon rescue his people who serve him.
Then we will see his glory again in our land.
10 God will be faithful to us
and he will love us with his faithful love.
His justice and his peace will join together,
    like dear friends.
11 Faithful truth will grow like a plant in the ground.
Justice will look down from the sky above.[c]
12 Yes! The Lord will bless us with many good things.
Plenty of food will grow in our land.
13 Justice will go before our God,
and it will make a way for him to walk on.

David's prayer.

A prayer for help

86 Lord, please listen to me,
    and answer me!
I am weak and I need help.
I am your faithful servant,
    so keep my life safe!
Please save me, my God,
    for I trust in you.
My Lord, be kind to me.
All through the day,
I am calling to you for help.
Please make me happy deep inside,
for you are the one that I pray to, my Lord.
Yes, my Lord, you are very kind,
and you are ready to forgive people.
When anyone calls to you for help,
you love them with your faithful love.
Lord, hear my prayer!
Please listen when I call to you for help.
Whenever trouble comes to me,
    I will pray to you.
I know that you will answer me.
There is no one like you, my Lord,
    among all the gods.
Nobody can do the great things that you do.
You have made all the nations of the world,
and they will all come to worship you, my Lord.
They will agree that your name is great.
10 For you are great and you do great things.
    You alone are God.
11 Lord, teach me how I should live.
Then I will obey your truth.
Teach me to serve you with all that I am,
so that I respect you with fear.
12 My Lord and my God,
I will thank you with all my strength.
I will praise your name for ever!
13 I know that you love me very much
    with your faithful love.
You will continue to keep my life safe,
so that I do not go down into the deep hole of death.
14 God, proud people are attacking me.
Cruel men have joined together to kill me.
They do not respect you at all.
15 But you, my Lord, are a kind God
    who forgives people.
You do not quickly become angry,
and your faithful love is very great.
We can always trust you
to do what you have promised.
16 Turn to me and be kind to me.
I am your servant, so make me strong.
Please rescue your slave!
17 Help me, so that I know you are pleased with me.
Then my enemies will see it,
    and they will be ashamed.
They will know that you, Lord,
have helped me and comforted me.

2 Kings 9:1-16

Jehu becomes king of Israel

The prophet Elisha told a man from the group of prophets to come to him. Elisha said to him, ‘Tie your belt around you and prepare to travel. Take this bottle of olive oil with you and go to Ramoth Gilead. When you arrive there, look for Jehu. He is the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him and take him into a room away from his friends. Pour the oil from the bottle onto his head. Say to him, “This is what the Lord says to you: I have now chosen you to be king of Israel.” Then open the door and run away quickly!’

The young prophet that Elisha had sent went to Ramoth Gilead. When he arrived there, he found the army officers. They were sitting together. The prophet said, ‘Captain, I have a message for you.’ Jehu asked him, ‘The message is for which of us?’ The prophet replied, ‘It is for you, sir.’ So Jehu stood up and he went into the house. The young prophet poured the oil onto Jehu's head. He said to him, ‘This is what the Lord, Israel's God, says to you: “I have now chosen you to be king of the Lord's people, Israel. You will destroy the family of your master, Ahab. In this way I will punish Ahab's wife Jezebel, because she killed the prophets and other people who served me. The whole family of Ahab must die. I will kill every male among his descendants in Israel, whoever they are. I will destroy Ahab's family as I did to the family of Nebat's son Jeroboam and the family of Ahijah's son Baasha. 10 Dogs will eat Jezebel's body on the ground in Jezreel. Nobody will bury her.” ’

Then the young prophet opened the door and he ran away.

11 Jehu went out to the other army officers. They asked him, ‘Is everything well? Why did that crazy man come to you?’ Jehu replied, ‘It was not important. You know what that man is like and the kind of things he says.’ 12 But the officers said, ‘That is not true! Tell us what he said.’ So Jehu told them what the prophet had said. He told them, ‘The prophet said, “This is what the Lord says: I have now chosen you to be the king of Israel.” ’

13 The other officers then quickly took their coats. They put them on the stone steps for Jehu to walk on. Then they made a loud noise with a trumpet. They shouted, ‘Jehu is king!’

Jehu kills Joram

14 So Jehu, the son of Jehoshaphat and grandson of Nimshi, became an enemy of King Joram.

Joram had been in Ramoth Gilead with the whole army of Israel. They were fighting against Hazael, the king of Syria, who wanted to attack Israel. 15 The Syrian soldiers had hurt King Joram in the battle against King Hazael. So he returned to Jezreel to get well again.

Jehu said to his men, ‘If you really want to help me, do not let anyone leave this city. Nobody must go to warn the people in Jezreel.’ 16 Then Jehu got into his chariot and he rode to Jezreel, because King Joram was resting there. Ahaziah, the king of Judah, had also gone to Jezreel to visit King Joram.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Use your bodies in a good way

12 Some of you believers may say, ‘I am free to do anything that I want to do.’ That may be true, but not everything will help you. I could say, ‘I am free to do the things that I want to do.’ Yes, but I will not let anything rule over me.

13 Some of you may say, ‘God made food to feed our bodies. That is why people have stomachs. But one day God will destroy both stomachs and food.’ Yes, but the Lord gave our bodies to us. Our bodies belong to the Lord. So you should not use your bodies to have sex in a wrong way.[a] 14 God raised the Lord Jesus after he died. And God will use his power to make us alive again too.[b]

15 You know that your bodies are parts of Christ's own body. So you must never take your body and make it join with a prostitute's body. That is like you have done it with part of Christ's body. Never let that happen! 16 Anyone who makes his own body join to a prostitute becomes one body with that prostitute. You should know that. It says in the Bible:

‘The man and the woman become as one body.’[c]

17 But everyone who is united to the Lord has the same spirit as him. 18 So never have sex in a wrong way! You may say, ‘If a person does a bad thing, it is not his body that does it.’ But if you have sex in a wrong way, you are doing a bad thing to your own body. 19 Remember this: Your body is the home of God's Holy Spirit. God gave his Holy Spirit to you and he lives in you. You do not belong to yourselves any longer. 20 God bought you for himself. He paid the price for you. So use your body to show how great God is.[d]

Matthew 6:1-6

Jesus teaches people how to help poor people

Jesus then said to them, ‘You should do good things to help people. But be careful! Do not do this so that other people see you. If you want other people to praise you, your Father in heaven will not praise you.

When you give something to a poor person, do not tell anyone about it. The hypocrites do this in their meeting places. They also do it in the busy streets of the town. They do this so that other people will praise them. I tell you this. They have already received their gift. God will not give them anything more.[a]

So when you give something to a poor person, keep it a secret from other people. Do not tell anyone. Your left hand will not even know what your right hand does! Nobody else will know about the good thing that you have done. But God sees the things that you do secretly. In return, he will give you good things.’

Jesus teaches people how to pray

‘Also, you must not pray in the way that the hypocrites pray. They like to stand and pray in their meeting places. They like to do it on the corners of the busy streets.[b] Then many people will see them and they will praise them. I tell you this. They have already received their gift from people. God will not give them anything more.

But this is how you should pray. Go to a place in your house where you can be alone. You can shut the door and you can pray to God your Father. He is in that secret place. He sees what you do there. He will give you good things in return.

Matthew 6:16-18

Jesus teaches people about different things

16 Jesus then said, ‘You may decide to fast for some time.[a] But do not look sad so that people know you are doing a special thing. Hypocrites want people to see how good they are. They make their faces dirty. Then other people can see that they are fasting. I tell you this: people have praised them and that is the only gift that they will get. 17 But when you fast for some time, you should wash your face. Make your hair look nice. 18 Then other people will not know that you are doing a special thing. But God, your Father, will know. You do not see him but he sees what you do secretly. He will give you good things in return.
