Psalm 120-127

A song to sing as we climb.

Lord, please help me[a]

120 I cried to the Lord to help me in my trouble.
    He answered me.
I prayed, ‘Lord, keep me safe from people who tell lies.
Save me from people who want to deceive me.’
How will God punish you,
    you people who deceive others?
He will punish you properly!
Yes, the sharp arrows of a soldier will hurt you.
They will give you pain, like wood that burns with fire.
I am so sad! I live in Meshek as a stranger.
I live among the people of Kedar.
I have lived too long with people that hate peace.
I want to live here in peace.
But when I say this, they only want war!

A song to sing as we climb.

Only God can keep me safe[b]

121 As I travel, I look up towards the hills.
I will find no help there.
My help comes from the Lord.
He made the heaven and the earth.
He will take care of you,
so that you do not fall.
The one who keeps you safe will not sleep.
Yes! The Lord keeps Israel's people safe.
He never gets tired or sleeps at all!
The Lord is the one who keeps you safe.
He is very near to you.
He will give you shade from the hot sun.
The hot sun will not hurt you in the daytime.
At night, the moon cannot hurt you.
The Lord is the one who takes care of you in all danger.
    He keeps your life safe.
Whatever you do and wherever you go,
the Lord will always keep you safe,
    now and for ever.

A song to sing as we climb.

David wrote this song.

122 It made me very happy when people said to me,
‘We will go to the house of the Lord.’[c]
Now we have arrived!
We are standing inside your gates, Jerusalem!
Jerusalem is a strong city where many people can meet together.
Israel's tribes who belong to the Lord go up there.[d]
They go there to thank the Lord,
    as he has commanded them.
Israel's leaders sit there to judge the people.
They sit on the thrones of King David's descendants.
Pray that there will be peace in Jerusalem.
Pray that people who love Jerusalem will be safe.
Yes, I pray that there will be peace inside the city's walls.
I pray people will be safe in their strong houses.
Because of my family and my friends I will pray,
‘Please let there be peace in Jerusalem.’
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pray for good things to happen in Jerusalem.

Servants of the Lord

123 I look up to you, God,
as you rule from your throne in heaven.
Yes, our eyes look up to the Lord our God.
We want him to be kind to us, so we wait for his help.
We wait like servants who want help from their master.
Please be kind to us, Lord. Please forgive us.
People have insulted us more and more!
    We have had too much!
Proud people laugh at us,
and they do not respect us.
Please stop them!

A song to sing as we climb.

David wrote this song.[e]

124 If the Lord was not fighting for us,
    what would have happened?
Israel's people, now answer:
‘If the Lord was not fighting for us when men attacked us,
our enemies would have eaten us alive![f]
They would have destroyed us,
because they were so angry against us.
They would have been too strong for us,
like rivers of waters that covered us,
They would have been like deep water over our heads
    that drowned us.[g]

We should praise the Lord!
He did not let our enemies destroy us,
like wild animals that kill their food and eat it.
Now we have become free,
like a bird that got free out of a trap.
Our enemies lost their power, and we are free![h]
The one who helped us is the Lord.
    He made the whole universe.’

A song to sing as we climb.

125 People who trust in the Lord are strong,
    like Mount Zion.[i]
Nothing can shake it. It will always be there.
The Lord is always near to his people,
    like the mountains round Jerusalem.
He keeps his people safe, now and for ever.[j]
Wicked people will not rule over God's own people.
They will not rule the land where righteous people live.
If they did, the righteous people might also do bad things.
Lord, please do good things to good, honest people.
Be kind to those who follow your good ways.
But as for people who follow their own bad ways,
    Lord, please remove them!
Take them away, along with people who do evil things.
May Israel have peace!

A song to sing as we climb.

The Lord has done great things for us![k]

126 When the Lord turned us round,
so that we enjoyed a good life in Zion again,
we thought that we were dreaming!
At that time, we laughed a lot.
We shouted because we were so happy!
People in other countries said to each other,
‘The Lord has done great things for them!’
Yes, the Lord has done great things for us.
    So we are very happy.
Lord, please bless us like before.
That will be like streams of water that return to the desert.[l]
When people went out to plant their seeds,
    they were crying.
But they will be happy when they bring in the harvest!
People were weeping when they took their bags of seeds to plant.[m]
But when they carry their crops back home,
they will shout because they are so happy![n]

A song to sing as we climb.

Solomon wrote this song.

Every good thing comes from God[o]

127 The Lord must build your house.
If not, the work of the builders is useless.
The Lord must keep the city safe.
If not, the city guards are useless.
It will not help you to work all day for food, and never stop.
God gives food to the people that he loves.
Even while they sleep, God takes care of them.
Children are a gift from the Lord.
    He blesses us with descendants.
If you have sons while you are a young man,
they are like a soldier's arrows.
If a man has many sons,
    God has blessed him.[p]
When his enemies speak against him at the city gate,
    they will not win.[q]

1 Samuel 11

Saul saves Jabesh town

11 One month later, Nahash went with his army to attack Jabesh, a town in Gilead region. Nahash was an Ammonite.[a] The people in Jabesh said to him, ‘Make an agreement with us so that we will serve you.’ Nahash said, ‘I will make an agreement with you only if you let me do this. I must cut out the right eye of every person in your town. I want to bring shame on all Israel's people.’

The leaders of Jabesh said to him, ‘Wait for seven more days. We will send a message to all the people in Israel. We will ask them to rescue us. If nobody comes to save us, we will agree to whatever you say.’

Men took the message to Gibeah, the town where Saul lived. When they told the news to the people there, the people started to weep loudly. Saul had been out on his farm. As he was returning home with his cows, he asked, ‘What has happened here? Why are the people weeping?’ They told Saul what the men from Jabesh had said.

When Saul heard the news, God's Spirit came on him with power. He became very angry. He killed two of his oxen. He cut their bodies into pieces. He sent men with the pieces to all the towns in Israel. In each town, the men said, ‘Everyone must join Saul and Samuel to fight in their army. If you do not agree to join them, they will cut up your oxen just like this!’ The people became very afraid of what the Lord would do. So they all came together as one army. They met together at Bezek. Saul counted 300,000 men from Israel and 30,000 men from Judah.[b]

Saul said to the men who had brought the news from Jabesh, ‘Return to Jabesh. Tell the people, “We will come to rescue you tomorrow, before midday.” ’

So the men took the message to the people in Jabesh. The people were very happy. 10 The men there said to Nahash, ‘Tomorrow we will come out of the town to you. Then you can do anything that you want to us.’

11 Early the next day, Saul put his soldiers into three groups. At dawn, they attacked the camp of the Ammonite soldiers. The Israelite soldiers continued to kill the Ammonites until midday. The Ammonite soldiers who were still alive ran away in different directions. Each man ran off by himself.

12 The Israelite people said to Samuel, ‘Bring to us those men who said, “We do not want Saul to rule over us.” We must kill them!’

13 Saul said, ‘No, you must not kill anyone today. It is the day when the Lord has rescued Israel's people.’

14 Samuel said to the people, ‘Now we will all go to Gilgal. We must all agree that Saul will continue to be our king.’ 15 So everyone went to Gilgal. They went to the place where they worshipped the Lord. They all agreed that Saul would be their king. They offered peace offerings to the Lord. Saul and all the Israelites were very happy.

Acts 8:1-13

Saul was standing there while the Jewish leaders killed Stephen. He agreed with what they did.

Saul puts many believers in prison

On the same day that Stephen died, the group of believers who lived in Jerusalem began to have great trouble. People did bad things to them. All the believers left Jerusalem and went to other places in Judea and Samaria. Only Jesus' 12 apostles stayed in Jerusalem.

Some good men who loved God buried Stephen's dead body. They were very sad and they cried with loud voices. But Saul brought great trouble to the believers. He wanted to destroy their whole group. So he went to all their houses. He took hold of the believers and he put them into prison. He did that to both men and women.

People in Samaria hear God's good news

The believers who had left Jerusalem went to many different towns. In each place, they told the people the message about Jesus. One of them who was called Philip went to a city in Samaria. There he told the people the message about Jesus Christ, God's Messiah.

Crowds of people came together to hear Philip speak. They saw him do many miracles which showed that God was with him. So they listened carefully to his message.[a] Many people there had bad spirits, which were living in them. Philip sent the bad spirits out of those people. As the spirits came out, they shouted loudly. Some other people had weak arms or legs, and some people could not walk well. Philip caused many of them to become well again. As a result, the people in that city were very happy.

A man called Simon lived in that city. For a long time, he had used magic to do great things. All the people who lived in Samaria were very surprised at what he did. Simon told everyone that he was a very important person. 10 All the people in the city watched Simon carefully. This included the people who were important and all the other people too. Everyone said, ‘This man has great power that comes from God.’ 11 Simon had used his magic for a long time and he had surprised them all very much. Because of that, they listened to him carefully. 12 But then Philip told them the good news about the kingdom of God. He told them the message about God's Messiah, Jesus. Many men and women believed Philip's message, so he baptized them. 13 Simon also believed and Philip baptized him too. After this, Simon stayed near to Philip. He was very surprised at the powerful miracles which Philip did.

Luke 22:63-71

The soldiers laugh at Jesus and they hit him

63 The men that were holding Jesus were laughing at him. They hit him many times. 64 They covered his eyes with a cloth and they said to him, ‘Show us that you are a prophet. Tell us who hit you!’ 65 And they said many other bad things against him.

The Jewish leaders ask Jesus questions

66 When it became day, the Jewish leaders met together. The leaders of the priests and the teachers of God's Law were at the meeting. Then other men brought Jesus to stand in front of them. 67 They asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah? If you are, tell us.’ Jesus replied, ‘If I do tell you, you will not believe me. 68 I could also ask you a question. But if I do that, you will not answer me. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be sitting in the most important place. He will be sitting at the right side of the Most Powerful God.’

70 ‘So, are you the Son of God?’ they all said. Jesus replied, ‘You say that I am.’

71 Then they said, ‘We do not need anyone else to speak against this man. We ourselves have heard what he has said about himself.’
