Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 132[a]
A song of ascents.[b]
132 O Lord, for David’s sake remember
all his strenuous effort,[c]
2 and how he made a vow to the Lord,
and swore an oath to the Powerful One of Jacob.
3 He said,[d] “I will not enter my own home,[e]
or get into my bed.[f]
4 I will not allow my eyes to sleep,
or my eyelids to slumber,
5 until I find a place for the Lord,
a fine dwelling place[g] for the Powerful One of Jacob.”[h]
6 Look, we heard about it[i] in Ephrathah;[j]
we found it in the territory of Jaar.[k]
7 Let us go to his dwelling place.
Let us worship[l] before his footstool.
8 Ascend, O Lord, to your resting place,
you and the ark of your strength.
9 May your priests be clothed with integrity.[m]
May your loyal followers shout for joy.
10 For the sake of David, your servant,
do not reject your chosen king.[n]
11 The Lord made a reliable promise to David;[o]
he will not go back on his word.[p]
He said,[q] “I will place one of your descendants[r] on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and the rules I teach them,
their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”
13 Certainly[s] the Lord has chosen Zion;
he decided to make it his home.[t]
14 He said,[u] “This will be my resting place forever;
I will live here, for I have chosen it.[v]
15 I will abundantly supply what she needs;[w]
I will give her poor all the food they need.[x]
16 I will protect her priests,[y]
and her godly people will shout exuberantly.[z]
17 There I will make David strong;[aa]
I have determined that my chosen king’s dynasty will continue.[ab]
18 I will humiliate his enemies,[ac]
and his crown will shine.”
An Ideal King Establishes a Kingdom of Peace
11 A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s[a] root stock,
a bud will sprout[b] from his roots.
2 The Lord’s Spirit will rest on him[c]—
a Spirit that gives extraordinary wisdom,[d]
a Spirit that provides the ability to execute plans,[e]
a Spirit that produces absolute loyalty to the Lord.[f]
3 He will take delight in obeying the Lord.[g]
He will not judge by mere appearances,[h]
or make decisions on the basis of hearsay.[i]
4 He will treat the poor fairly,[j]
and make right decisions[k] for the downtrodden of the earth.[l]
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,[m]
and order the wicked to be executed.[n]
5 Justice will be like a belt around his waist,
integrity will be like a belt around his hips.[o]
6 A wolf will reside[p] with a lamb,
and a leopard will lie down with a young goat;
an ox and a young lion will graze together,[q]
as a small child leads them along.
7 A cow and a bear will graze together,
their young will lie down together.[r]
A lion, like an ox, will eat straw.
8 A baby[s] will play
over the hole of a snake;[t]
over the nest[u] of a serpent
an infant[v] will put his hand.[w]
9 They will no longer injure or destroy
on my entire royal mountain.[x]
For there will be universal submission to the Lord’s sovereignty,
just as the waters completely cover the sea.[y]
Israel is Reclaimed and Reunited
10 At that time[z] a root from Jesse[aa] will stand like a signal flag for the nations. Nations will look to him for guidance,[ab] and his residence will be majestic.
11 For indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin,[a] and so[b] he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,[c] 12 saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers;[d] in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.”[e] 13 Again he says,[f] “I will be confident in him,” and again, “Here I am,[g] with[h] the children God has given me.”[i] 14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in[j] their humanity,[k] so that through death he could destroy[l] the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), 15 and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. 16 For surely his concern is not for angels, but he is concerned for Abraham’s descendants. 17 Therefore he had[m] to be made like his brothers and sisters[n] in every respect, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement[o] for the sins of the people. 18 For since he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
