Psalm 66-67

This psalm is a song for the music leader.

Praise God![a]

66 Everyone on earth, shout aloud to praise God,
    because you are very happy.
Sing to praise his great name!
Praise him in the way that he deserves.
Say to God, ‘You do great things!
Your great power makes your enemies afraid.
They come to you and they bend down to the ground.
The whole world bends down to worship you.
Everyone sings to praise your name.’
Selah.
Come and see the great things that God has done.
He has done wonderful miracles for people!
He caused the Red Sea to become dry land.
Then his people walked across the Jordan River![b]
So we praise him for what he did there!
He has the power to rule for ever.
He watches everything that the nations do.
Wicked people should not be proud and turn against him.
Selah.
You people from every nation,
agree that our God is great!
Praise him with loud voices,
    so that everyone can hear!
He keeps our lives safe.
He does not let us fall to the ground.
10 You have tested us, God.
You wanted to make us pure,
as they make silver pure in a hot fire.
11 You caused a trap to catch us,
so that we had much pain and trouble.
12 You gave people power to hurt us.
We went through dangerous fire and water.
But then you brought us into a safe, open place.[c]

13 I will bring burnt offerings to your Temple.
I will bring to you the gifts that I promised.
14 When I was in trouble, I made those promises.
    I spoke them aloud.
15 I will offer to you gifts of fat animals,
    to burn them as sacrifices.
I will also burn sheep as offerings,
and their smell will please you.
I will also offer to you bulls and goats.
Selah.
16 Come and listen,
all you people who serve God.
I will tell you about the things that God has done for me.
17 I called to him for help,
    then I praised him aloud!
18 If I had kept wicked things in my mind,
the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God did hear me.
When I called to him,
    he listened to my prayer.
20 So I praise God, as he deserves.[d]
He has not refused to listen to me.
He has continued to love me with his faithful love.

This psalm is a song for the music leader. He is to use stringed instruments.

All the nations should praise God[e]

67 God, please be kind to us and bless us.
Look at us with a smile on your face.
Selah.
Then people on the earth will know
    what pleases you.
People from all nations will know
that you have the power to save them.
May people everywhere praise you, God.
Yes, may they all praise you!
May the nations be so happy
that they sing aloud with joy!
Because you are fair when you judge people,
and you are a guide for all the nations of the world.
Selah.
May people everywhere praise you, God.
Yes, may they all praise you!
The land has given us a harvest of food,
and God, our God, continues to bless us.
God, please bless us!
Then all people everywhere will respect you.

Psalm 19

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God teaches us about himself

19 The heavens show us how great God is.
The sky above shows his good work.
Each day speaks about God,
until the next day continues the story.
Every night tells us how great God is.
They do not use words to speak with.
    Nobody hears their voice.
But their message goes round all the earth.
All the world can understand what they say.

God has made a home for the sun in the sky.
Each morning, the sun comes out,
like a happy man who has just married.
It comes out,
like a strong man who wants to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens.
It travels in a big circle to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.[a]

The law of the Lord is perfect.
    It makes us strong again.
We can trust what the Lord teaches us.
He helps ordinary people to be wise.
The Lord's rules are always right.
If we obey them, they make us really happy.
The Lord's commands are completely good.
They show us how to live in a good way.
It is right for us to respect the Lord.
    That will always help us.
The laws of the Lord are true.
    They are right and fair.
10 They are more valuable than gold,
    even the best gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey.
11 Your laws warn us to do what is right.
If we obey them, they are a great help to us.[b]

12 Nobody realizes every time they do something wrong.
Please forgive me for the sins that I do not know about.
13 Lord, stop me doing things that I know are wrong.
Do not let those sins rule my life.
Then I will not be guilty.
I will not have turned against you in a bad way.

14 Lord, I want to make you happy.
I want my words and my thoughts to please you.
You are my strong Rock
    and you are my Redeemer.[c]

Psalm 46

The sons of Korah wrote this special song for the music leader.

The city of God[a]

46 God is a strong place for us,
where he will keep us safe.
He will always help us
    when troubles come.
So even when the earth shakes,
    we will not be afraid.
And when the mountains fall down
    into the deep sea,
we will still not be afraid.
If the sea makes dangerous waves,
so that even the mountains shake,
we will never be afraid.
Selah.
There is a river that runs into the city of God,
and it brings God's blessing to the people there.
That is the holy place
where the Most High God lives.
God is in that city.
    Nothing can ever destroy it.
When dawn comes, God will be there to help it.
Nations are shouting with anger!
    Kingdoms shake and fall.
God calls in a loud voice,
    and even the earth melts!
The Lord Almighty is there to help us.
The God of Jacob keeps us safe.
Selah.
Come and see the great things
    that the Lord has done.
He has brought terrible things to the earth!
All over the world, he causes wars to finish.
He destroys the soldiers' bows and spears.
He burns their shields in a fire.
10 He says, ‘Be still and quiet!
    Understand that I am God.
I rule as king over the nations.
All the world will say that I am great.’
11 The Lord Almighty is there to help us.
The God of Jacob keeps us safe.
Selah.

Ezekiel 3:16-27

Ezekiel must warn the Lord's people

16 When the seven days were finished, the Lord gave this message to me:

17 ‘Son of man, I have made you a guard to warn Israel's people about danger. You must listen to the messages that I will give to you. Then you must use my messages to warn the Israelites. 18 I may say to a wicked person, “Your punishment will be death.” Then you must warn that person. You must tell him to stop doing wicked things so that he may save his life. If you do not tell the wicked person this, he will die because of his sins. But I will say that you are guilty, as if you had killed him yourself. 19 So you must warn the wicked person. If you warn him, he still may not stop doing wicked things. Then that wicked person will die because of his sins. But you will have saved your own life.

20 A righteous person may stop doing things that are right. He may start to do bad things. Then I will put him in danger. He will die as punishment for his sins. I will not remember the good things that he did. But if you have not warned him of the danger, I will say that you are guilty. It is as if you killed him yourself. 21 But if you do warn that righteous person to stop doing bad things, he may agree. Then he will continue to live, because you warned him. You also will have saved your own life.’

22 The Lord continued to give me strength. He said to me, ‘Stand up now! Go out into the valley and I will speak to you there.’ 23 So I got up and I went out to the valley. I saw the glory of the Lord in that place. It was like the glory that I had seen beside the Kebar river. I bent down low, with my face to the ground.

24 Then a spirit came into me. He lifted me up and he made me stand on my feet. The Lord said to me, ‘Go into your house and shut the door. 25 Son of man, people will tie you with ropes so that you cannot move. You will not be able to go out among the people. 26 I will also stop your tongue from moving so that you cannot speak. You will not be able to warn the Israelites. They are people who refuse to obey me. 27 But sometimes I will speak to you. Then you will be able to open your mouth and give them my message. You must tell them, “This is what the Almighty Lord says.” Some of them will listen to my message. But other people will refuse to listen. They are a nation of people who refuse to obey me.’[a]

Ephesians 2:1-10

God has made us alive with Christ

Remember how you lived before. You did wrong things and bad things. As a result, you were dead in your spirits. You lived in a bad way, like the people who belong to this world. You were obeying Satan, who rules the powerful spirits in the air. Those spirits are working now in everyone who refuses to obey God. At one time, all of us lived like those people. We did whatever bad things our bodies wanted to do. If our thoughts made us want to do something, we did it. Because we were like that, God was angry with us. He should have punished us, just like everyone else.

But God is very good and kind! He loved us very much. Because of our sins, we were dead in our spirits. But God gave us a new life, because we are united with Christ. Yes, God has saved you because he is so kind. Also, God raised us up with Christ, so that we now sit with Christ in heaven. God has done this for us because we are united with Christ Jesus. He wanted to show, for all future time, how very kind he is. He has helped us so much because of what Christ Jesus has done. When you believed in Jesus, God saved you because he is very kind. You could not save yourselves, but that is God's gift to you. He has not saved you as a result of any good things that you have done. So nobody has any reason to be proud about it. 10 It is God who has worked in us to make us what we are. He has given us a new life because we are united with Christ Jesus. He saved us so that now we can do good things in our lives. Those are good things that he has already prepared for us to do.

Matthew 10:24-33

24 A student is not more important than his teacher is. A servant is not more important than his master is. 25 A student should be happy if he becomes like his teacher. A servant should be happy if he becomes like his master. People have called me, the master of the house, Beelzebul. You are like those people who live in my house. So do not be surprised when people call you even worse names than they call me.

26 So do not be afraid of these people. They hide the things that they do. But there will be a time when other people will see those things. Everyone will know all their secrets. 27 I tell you things secretly, like people do in the dark. But you must tell people these things clearly in the light of day. I have said things very quietly into your ears. But now you must shout those things loudly from the tops of the houses.[a]

28 Do not be afraid of those people who can kill only your body. These people cannot kill your soul. No, it is God that you should be afraid of. He can kill your body, and then he can also destroy your soul in hell. 29 Think about this. People sell two birds for just one small coin. But God takes care of these little birds. Not one of them can fall to the ground unless God lets it happen. 30 God even knows how many hairs there are on your head. 31 So do not be afraid of those people who are against you. You are more valuable to God than many little birds.

32 You should say clearly to other people, “I believe in Jesus.” If you do that, I will say to my Father in heaven, “This is someone who is my disciple.” 33 But if you say to other people, “I do not believe in Jesus,” I will then say to my Father in heaven, “I do not know that person. He is not one of my disciples.”

Matthew 10:40-42

Jesus teaches about God's gifts

40 Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone accepts you in his home, then he is also accepting me. And anyone who accepts me, also accepts my Father God, who sent me. 41 Somebody may accept a prophet into his home because the visitor is a prophet of God. God will bless that person like he blesses a prophet. Or he may accept a good man who obeys God, because the man is good. God will bless that person like he blesses the good man. 42 People may think that my disciples are unimportant. But God will bless anyone who gives even a drink of cold water to one of them. I tell you, that person will never lose God's help.’
