The Greatest Command
6 “This is the command—the statutes and ordinances—the Lord your God has instructed me to teach you, so that you may follow them in the land you are about to enter and possess.(A) 2 Do this so that you may fear(B) the Lord your God all the days of your life by keeping all His statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life. 3 Listen, Israel, and be careful to follow them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly, because Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.(C)
4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.[a](D) 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.(E) 6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.(F) 7 Repeat them to your children.(G) Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol[b] on your forehead.[c](H) 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
18 For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm, 19 to the blast of a trumpet, and the sound of words. (Those who heard it begged that not another word be spoken to them, 20 for they could not bear what was commanded: And if even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned!(A)[a] 21 The appearance was so terrifying that Moses said, I am terrified and trembling.(B)[b]) 22 Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem), to myriads of angels in festive gathering,(C) 23 to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written[c] in heaven, to God who is the Judge of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect,(D) 24 to Jesus (mediator(E) of a new covenant(F)), and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel.(G)
25 Make sure that you do not reject the One who speaks. For if they did not escape when they rejected Him who warned them on earth, even less will we if we turn away from Him who warns us from heaven.(H) 26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now He has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also heaven.(I)[d] 27 This expression, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what can be shaken(J)—that is, created things—so that what is not shaken might remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace.[e] By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,(K) 29 for our God is a consuming fire.(L)
24 “I assure you: Unless a grain of wheat(A) falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces a large crop.[a](B) 25 The one who loves his life will lose it,(C) and the one who hates(D) his life(E) in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there My servant(F) also will be.(G) If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor(H) him.
27 “Now My soul is troubled. What should I say—Father, save Me(I) from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name!”[b](J)
Then a voice(K) came from heaven:(L) “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again!”(M)
29 The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him.
30 Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for Me, but for you.(N) 31 Now is the judgment of this world.(O) Now the ruler of this world(P) will be cast out.(Q) 32 As for Me, if I am lifted up[c] from the earth I will draw all people to Myself.”(R)
