Psalm 119:97-120

Love for the Law of the Lord

97 How I love your law!
    I think about it all day long.
98 Your commandment is with me all the time
    and makes me wiser than my enemies.
99 I understand more than all my teachers,
    because I meditate on your instructions.
100 I have greater wisdom than those who are old,
    because I obey your commands.
101 I have avoided all evil conduct,
    because I want to obey your word.
102 I have not neglected your instructions,
    because you yourself are my teacher.
103 How sweet is the taste of your instructions—
    sweeter even than honey!
104 I gain wisdom from your laws,
    and so I hate all bad conduct.

Light from the Law of the Lord

105 Your word is a lamp to guide me
    and a light for my path.
106 I will keep my solemn promise
    to obey your just instructions.
107 My sufferings, Lord, are terrible indeed;
    keep me alive, as you have promised.
108 Accept my prayer of thanks, O Lord,
    and teach me your commands.
109 I am always ready to risk my life;
    I[a] have not forgotten your law.
110 The wicked lay a trap for me,
    but I have not disobeyed your commands.
111 Your commandments are my eternal possession;
    they are the joy of my heart.
112 I have decided to obey your laws
    until the day I die.

Safety in the Law of the Lord

113 I hate those who are not completely loyal to you,
    but I love your law.
114 You are my defender and protector;
    I put my hope in your promise.
115 Go away from me, you sinful people.
    I will obey the commands of my God.
116 Give me strength, as you promised, and I shall live;
    don't let me be disappointed in my hope!
117 Hold me, and I will be safe,
    and I will always pay attention to your commands.
118 You reject everyone who disobeys your laws;
    their deceitful schemes are useless.
119 You treat all the wicked like rubbish,
    and so I love your instructions.
120 Because of you I am afraid;
    I am filled with fear because of your judgments.

Psalm 81-82

A Song for a Festival[a]

81 Shout for joy to God our defender;
    sing praise to the God of Jacob!
Start the music and beat the tambourines;
    play pleasant music on the harps and the lyres.
(A)Blow the trumpet for the festival,
    when the moon is new and when the moon is full.
This is the law in Israel,
    an order from the God of Jacob.
He gave it to the people of Israel
    when he attacked the land of Egypt.

I hear an unknown voice saying,
“I took the burdens off your backs;
    I let you put down your loads of bricks.
(B)When you were in trouble, you called to me, and I saved you.
    From my hiding place in the storm, I answered you.
    I put you to the test at the springs of Meribah.
Listen, my people, to my warning;
    Israel, how I wish you would listen to me!
(C)You must never worship another god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
    who brought you out of Egypt.
Open your mouth, and I will feed you.

11 “But my people would not listen to me;
    Israel would not obey me.
12 So I let them go their stubborn ways
    and do whatever they wanted.
13 How I wish my people would listen to me;
    how I wish they would obey me!
14 I would quickly defeat their enemies
    and conquer all their foes.
15 Those who hate me would bow in fear before me;
    their punishment would last forever.
16 But I would feed you with the finest wheat
    and satisfy you with wild honey.”

God the Supreme Ruler[b]

82 God presides in the heavenly council;
    in the assembly of the gods he gives his decision:
“You must stop judging unjustly;
    you must no longer be partial to the wicked!
Defend the rights of the poor and the orphans;
    be fair to the needy and the helpless.
Rescue them from the power of evil people.

“How ignorant you are! How stupid!
    You are completely corrupt,
    and justice has disappeared from the world.
(D)‘You are gods,’ I said;
    ‘all of you are children of the Most High.’
But you will die like mortals;
    your life will end like that of any prince.”

Come, O God, and rule the world;
    all the nations are yours.

Numbers 11:24-35

24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He assembled seventy of the leaders and placed them around the Tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the spirit he had given to Moses and gave it to the seventy leaders. When the spirit came on them, they began to shout like prophets, but not for long.

26 Two of the seventy leaders, Eldad and Medad, had stayed in the camp and had not gone out to the Tent. There in the camp the spirit came on them, and they too began to shout like prophets. 27 A young man ran out to tell Moses what Eldad and Medad were doing.

28 Then Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' helper since he was a young man, spoke up and said to Moses, “Stop them, sir!”

29 Moses answered, “Are you concerned about my interests? I wish that the Lord would give his spirit to all his people and make all of them shout like prophets!” 30 Then Moses and the seventy leaders of Israel went back to camp.

The Lord Sends Quails

31 Suddenly the Lord sent a wind that brought quails from the sea, flying three feet above the ground. They settled on the camp and all around it for miles and miles in every direction.[a] 32 So all that day, all night, and all the next day, the people worked catching quails; no one gathered less than fifty bushels. They spread them out to dry all around the camp. 33 While there was still plenty of meat for them to eat, the Lord became angry with the people and caused an epidemic to break out among them. 34 That place was named Kibroth Hattaavah (which means “Graves of Craving”), because there they buried the people who had craved meat.

35 From there the people moved to Hazeroth, where they made camp.

Romans 1:28-2:11

28 Because those people refuse to keep in mind the true knowledge about God, he has given them over to corrupted minds, so that they do the things that they should not do. 29 They are filled with all kinds of wickedness, evil, greed, and vice; they are full of jealousy, murder, fighting, deceit, and malice. They gossip 30 and speak evil of one another; they are hateful to God, insolent,[a] proud, and boastful; they think of more ways to do evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no conscience; they do not keep their promises, and they show no kindness or pity for others. 32 They know that God's law says that people who live in this way deserve death. Yet, not only do they continue to do these very things, but they even approve of others who do them.

God's Judgment

(A)Do you, my friend, pass judgment on others? You have no excuse at all, whoever you are. For when you judge others and then do the same things which they do, you condemn yourself. We know that God is right when he judges the people who do such things as these. But you, my friend, do those very things for which you pass judgment on others! Do you think you will escape God's judgment? (B)Or perhaps you despise his great kindness, tolerance, and patience. Surely you know that God is kind, because he is trying to lead you to repent. But you have a hard and stubborn heart, and so you are making your own punishment even greater on the Day when God's anger and righteous judgments will be revealed. (C)For God will reward each of us according to what we have done. Some people keep on doing good, and seek glory, honor, and immortal life; to them God will give eternal life. Other people are selfish and reject what is right, in order to follow what is wrong; on them God will pour out his anger and fury. There will be suffering and pain for all those who do what is evil, for the Jews first and also for the Gentiles. 10 But God will give glory, honor, and peace to all who do what is good, to the Jews first and also to the Gentiles. 11 (D)For God judges everyone by the same standard.

Matthew 18:1-9

Who Is the Greatest? (A)

18 (B)At that time the disciples came to Jesus, asking, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?”

So Jesus called a child to come and stand in front of them, (C)and said, “I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of heaven. The greatest in the Kingdom of heaven is the one who humbles himself and becomes like this child. And whoever welcomes in my name one such child as this, welcomes me.

Temptations to Sin(D)

“If anyone should cause one of these little ones to lose his faith in me, it would be better for that person to have a large millstone tied around his neck and be drowned in the deep sea. How terrible for the world that there are things that make people lose their faith! Such things will always happen—but how terrible for the one who causes them!

(E)“If your hand or your foot makes you lose your faith, cut it off and throw it away! It is better for you to enter life without a hand or a foot than to keep both hands and both feet and be thrown into the eternal fire. (F)And if your eye makes you lose your faith, take it out and throw it away! It is better for you to enter life with only one eye than to keep both eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
