Psalm 85-86

Psalm 85

For the choir director; a psalm by Korah’s descendants.

You favored your land, O Yahweh.
You restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You removed your people’s guilt.
You pardoned all their sins. Selah
You laid aside all your fury.
You turned away from your burning anger.

Restore us, O Elohim, our savior.
Put an end to your anger against us.
Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you ever let go of your anger in the generations to come?
Won’t you restore our lives again
so that your people may find joy in you?
Show us your mercy, O Yahweh,
            by giving us your salvation.

I want to hear what El Yahweh says,
because he promises peace to his people, to his godly ones.
But they must not go back to their stupidity.
Indeed, his salvation is near those who fear him,
and his glory will remain in our land.

10 Mercy and truth have met.
    Righteousness and peace have kissed.
11 Truth sprouts from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 Yahweh will certainly give us what is good,
and our land will produce crops.
13 Righteousness will go ahead of him
and make a path for his steps.

Psalm 86

A prayer by David.

Turn your ear toward me, O Yahweh.
Answer me, because I am oppressed and needy.
Protect me, because I am faithful to you.
Save your servant who trusts you. You are my Elohim.
Have pity on me, O Adonay,
because I call out to you all day long.
Give me joy, O Adonay,
because I lift my soul to you.
You, O Adonay, are good and forgiving,
full of mercy toward everyone who calls out to you.
Open your ears to my prayer, O Yahweh.
Pay attention when I plead for mercy.
When I am in trouble, I call out to you
    because you answer me.

No god is like you, O Adonay.
No one can do what you do.
All the nations that you have made
will bow in your presence, O Adonay.
        They will honor you.
10 Indeed, you are great, a worker of miracles.
    You alone are Elohim.
11 Teach me your way, O Yahweh,
so that I may live in your truth.
Focus my heart on fearing you.
12 I will give thanks to you with all my heart, O Adonay my Elohim.
    I will honor you forever
13 because your mercy toward me is great.
You have rescued me from the depths of hell.

14 O Elohim, arrogant people attack me,
and a mob of ruthless people seeks my life.
        They think nothing of you.
15 But you, O Adonay, are a compassionate and merciful God.
You are patient, always faithful and ready to forgive.
16 Turn toward me, and have pity on me.
Give me your strength because I am your servant.
Save me because I am the son of your female servant.
17 Grant me some proof of your goodness
so that those who hate me may see it and be put to shame.
You, O Yahweh, have helped me and comforted me.

Psalm 91-92

Psalm 91

Whoever lives under the shelter of Elyon
will remain in the shadow of Shadday.
I will say to Yahweh,
“You are my Machseh and my Metsuda, my Elohim in whom I trust.”

He is the one who will rescue you from hunters’ traps
    and from deadly plagues.
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge.
His truth is your shield and armor.

You do not need to fear
    terrors of the night,
arrows that fly during the day,
plagues that roam the dark,
    epidemics that strike at noon.
They will not come near you,
even though a thousand may fall dead beside you
or ten thousand at your right side.

You only have to look with your eyes
to see the punishment of wicked people.

You, O Yahweh, are my Machseh!

You have made Elyon your home.
10 No harm will come to you.
No sickness will come near your house.
11 He will put his angels in charge of you
to protect you in all your ways.
12 They will carry you in their hands
so that you never hit your foot against a rock.
13 You will step on lions and cobras.
You will trample young lions and snakes.

14 Because you love me, I will rescue you.
I will protect you because you know my name.
15 When you call to me, I will answer you.
I will be with you when you are in trouble.
I will save you and honor you.
16 I will satisfy you with a long life.
I will show you how I will save you.

Psalm 92

A psalm; a song; for the day of worship.

It is good to give thanks to Yahweh,
to make music to praise your name, O Elyon.
It is good to announce your mercy in the morning
and your faithfulness in the evening
        on a ten-stringed instrument and a harp
and with a melody on a lyre.

You made me find joy in what you have done, O Yahweh.
I will sing joyfully about the works of your hands.
How spectacular are your works, O Yahweh!
How very deep are your thoughts!

A stupid person cannot know
    and a fool cannot understand
that wicked people sprout like grass
and all troublemakers blossom like flowers,
                only to be destroyed forever.

But you, O Yahweh, are highly honored forever.
Now look at your enemies, O Yahweh.
    Now look at your enemies.
They disappear, and all troublemakers are scattered.

10 But you make me as strong as a wild bull,
and soothing lotion is poured on me.
11 My eyes gloat over those who spy on me.
My ears hear the cries of evildoers attacking me.

12 Righteous people flourish like palm trees
and grow tall like the cedars in Lebanon.
13 They are planted in Yahweh’s house.
    They blossom in Elohim’s courtyards.
14 Even when they are old, they still bear fruit.
They are always healthy and fresh.
15 They make it known that Yahweh is decent.
    He is my rock.
        He is never unfair.

1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah’s Prayer

Hannah prayed out loud,

“My heart finds joy in Yahweh.
My head is lifted to Yahweh.
My mouth mocks my enemies.
I rejoice because you saved me.
There is no one holy like Yahweh.
There is no one but you, O Lord.
There is no Tsur like our Elohim.

“Do not boast
or let arrogance come out of your mouth
because Yahweh is an El of knowledge,
            and he weighs our actions.

“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumble are armed with strength.
Those who were well-fed hire themselves out for a piece of bread,
but those who were hungry hunger no more.
Even the woman who was childless gives birth to seven children,
but the mother of many children grieves all alone.

Yahweh kills, and he gives life.
He makes people go down to the grave, and he raises them up again.
Yahweh causes poverty and grants wealth.
He humbles people; he also promotes them.
He raises the poor from the dust.
He lifts the needy from the trash heap
in order to make them sit with nobles
and even to make them inherit a glorious throne.

“The pillars of the earth are Yahweh’s.
He has set the world on them.
He safeguards the steps of his faithful ones,
but wicked people are silenced in darkness
because humans cannot succeed by their own strength.

10 “Those who oppose Yahweh are broken into pieces.
He thunders at them from the heavens.
Yahweh judges the ends of the earth.
He gives strength to his King
and lifts the head of his Messiah.”[a]

Ephesians 2:1-10

God Saved Us because of His Great Love for Us

You were once dead because of your failures and sins. You followed the ways of this present world and its spiritual ruler. This ruler continues to work in people who refuse to obey God. All of us once lived among these people, and followed the desires of our corrupt nature. We did what our corrupt desires and thoughts wanted us to do. So, because of our nature, we deserved God’s anger just like everyone else.

But God is rich in mercy because of his great love for us. We were dead because of our failures, but he made us alive together with Christ. (It is God’s kindness[a] that saved you.) God has brought us back to life together with Christ Yeshua and has given us a position in heaven with him. He did this through Christ Yeshua out of his generosity to us in order to show his extremely rich kindness in the world to come. God saved you through faith as an act of kindness. You had nothing to do with it. Being saved is a gift from God. It’s not the result of anything you’ve done, so no one can brag about it. 10 God has made us what we are. He has created us in Christ Yeshua to live lives filled with good works that he has prepared for us to do.

Matthew 7:22-27

22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name? Didn’t we force out demons and do many miracles by the power and authority of your name?’ 23 Then I will tell them publicly, ‘I’ve never known you. Get away from me, you evil people.’

Build on the Rock(A)

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears what I say and obeys it will be like a wise person who built a house on rock. 25 Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not collapse, because its foundation was on rock.

26 “Everyone who hears what I say but doesn’t obey it will be like a foolish person who built a house on sand. 27 Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and struck that house. It collapsed, and the result was a total disaster.”
