Psalm 66-67

This psalm is a song for the music leader.

Praise God![a]

66 Everyone on earth, shout aloud to praise God,
    because you are very happy.
Sing to praise his great name!
Praise him in the way that he deserves.
Say to God, ‘You do great things!
Your great power makes your enemies afraid.
They come to you and they bend down to the ground.
The whole world bends down to worship you.
Everyone sings to praise your name.’
Selah.
Come and see the great things that God has done.
He has done wonderful miracles for people!
He caused the Red Sea to become dry land.
Then his people walked across the Jordan River![b]
So we praise him for what he did there!
He has the power to rule for ever.
He watches everything that the nations do.
Wicked people should not be proud and turn against him.
Selah.
You people from every nation,
agree that our God is great!
Praise him with loud voices,
    so that everyone can hear!
He keeps our lives safe.
He does not let us fall to the ground.
10 You have tested us, God.
You wanted to make us pure,
as they make silver pure in a hot fire.
11 You caused a trap to catch us,
so that we had much pain and trouble.
12 You gave people power to hurt us.
We went through dangerous fire and water.
But then you brought us into a safe, open place.[c]

13 I will bring burnt offerings to your Temple.
I will bring to you the gifts that I promised.
14 When I was in trouble, I made those promises.
    I spoke them aloud.
15 I will offer to you gifts of fat animals,
    to burn them as sacrifices.
I will also burn sheep as offerings,
and their smell will please you.
I will also offer to you bulls and goats.
Selah.
16 Come and listen,
all you people who serve God.
I will tell you about the things that God has done for me.
17 I called to him for help,
    then I praised him aloud!
18 If I had kept wicked things in my mind,
the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God did hear me.
When I called to him,
    he listened to my prayer.
20 So I praise God, as he deserves.[d]
He has not refused to listen to me.
He has continued to love me with his faithful love.

This psalm is a song for the music leader. He is to use stringed instruments.

All the nations should praise God[e]

67 God, please be kind to us and bless us.
Look at us with a smile on your face.
Selah.
Then people on the earth will know
    what pleases you.
People from all nations will know
that you have the power to save them.
May people everywhere praise you, God.
Yes, may they all praise you!
May the nations be so happy
that they sing aloud with joy!
Because you are fair when you judge people,
and you are a guide for all the nations of the world.
Selah.
May people everywhere praise you, God.
Yes, may they all praise you!
The land has given us a harvest of food,
and God, our God, continues to bless us.
God, please bless us!
Then all people everywhere will respect you.

Psalm 19

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God teaches us about himself

19 The heavens show us how great God is.
The sky above shows his good work.
Each day speaks about God,
until the next day continues the story.
Every night tells us how great God is.
They do not use words to speak with.
    Nobody hears their voice.
But their message goes round all the earth.
All the world can understand what they say.

God has made a home for the sun in the sky.
Each morning, the sun comes out,
like a happy man who has just married.
It comes out,
like a strong man who wants to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens.
It travels in a big circle to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.[a]

The law of the Lord is perfect.
    It makes us strong again.
We can trust what the Lord teaches us.
He helps ordinary people to be wise.
The Lord's rules are always right.
If we obey them, they make us really happy.
The Lord's commands are completely good.
They show us how to live in a good way.
It is right for us to respect the Lord.
    That will always help us.
The laws of the Lord are true.
    They are right and fair.
10 They are more valuable than gold,
    even the best gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey.
11 Your laws warn us to do what is right.
If we obey them, they are a great help to us.[b]

12 Nobody realizes every time they do something wrong.
Please forgive me for the sins that I do not know about.
13 Lord, stop me doing things that I know are wrong.
Do not let those sins rule my life.
Then I will not be guilty.
I will not have turned against you in a bad way.

14 Lord, I want to make you happy.
I want my words and my thoughts to please you.
You are my strong Rock
    and you are my Redeemer.[c]

Psalm 46

The sons of Korah wrote this special song for the music leader.

The city of God[a]

46 God is a strong place for us,
where he will keep us safe.
He will always help us
    when troubles come.
So even when the earth shakes,
    we will not be afraid.
And when the mountains fall down
    into the deep sea,
we will still not be afraid.
If the sea makes dangerous waves,
so that even the mountains shake,
we will never be afraid.
Selah.
There is a river that runs into the city of God,
and it brings God's blessing to the people there.
That is the holy place
where the Most High God lives.
God is in that city.
    Nothing can ever destroy it.
When dawn comes, God will be there to help it.
Nations are shouting with anger!
    Kingdoms shake and fall.
God calls in a loud voice,
    and even the earth melts!
The Lord Almighty is there to help us.
The God of Jacob keeps us safe.
Selah.
Come and see the great things
    that the Lord has done.
He has brought terrible things to the earth!
All over the world, he causes wars to finish.
He destroys the soldiers' bows and spears.
He burns their shields in a fire.
10 He says, ‘Be still and quiet!
    Understand that I am God.
I rule as king over the nations.
All the world will say that I am great.’
11 The Lord Almighty is there to help us.
The God of Jacob keeps us safe.
Selah.

Genesis 29:20-35

20 Jacob worked for seven years to have Rachel as his wife. But the years passed very quickly because Jacob loved Rachel very much. Seven years seemed like only a few days to Jacob.

Jacob marries Leah and Rachel

21 After seven years, Jacob said to Laban, ‘Give me my wife. My time to work for you is finished and I want to marry her.’ 22 Laban called all the people in that place to come together. He prepared a big meal for them to eat. 23 When evening came, Laban took his daughter Leah and he gave her to Jacob. Jacob slept that night with her as his wife. 24 Laban gave his female servant to Leah to be her servant. Her name was Zilpah.

25 When morning came, Jacob saw that he had slept with Leah! He said to Laban, ‘You have done a very bad thing to me! I worked for you to get Rachel as my wife. Why have you deceived me?’ 26 Laban replied, ‘In our land, we do not give the younger daughter to a man first. We let the older daughter marry first. 27 So finish this week of Leah's marriage. Then we will give you Rachel to marry too. But you must work for another seven years.’[a]

28 So Jacob did what Laban said. He finished the marriage week with Leah. Then Laban gave Rachel to Jacob to be his wife. 29 Laban gave his female servant Bilhah to Rachel to become her servant. 30 Jacob also slept with Rachel. He loved Rachel more than he loved Leah. He worked for Laban for seven more years.

31 The Lord saw that Jacob did not love Leah. So he let her become pregnant. But Rachel did not give birth to any children. 32 Leah became pregnant and she gave birth to a son. She called him Reuben. She said, ‘It is because the Lord has seen how sad I am. My husband will love me now because I have given birth to a son.’

33 Leah became pregnant again. She gave birth to another son. She said, ‘The Lord has given me another son because he knows that I am not loved.’ She called this son Simeon.

34 Leah became pregnant again. Later, she gave birth to another son. She said, ‘Now I have given my husband three sons, so he will want to stay with me.’ She called this son Levi.

35 Leah became pregnant again. She gave birth to another son. She said, ‘This time I will praise the Lord.’ She called this son Judah. Then she stopped giving birth to children.

1 Timothy 3:14-4:10

14 I hope to come to visit you soon. But anyway, I want to write these things to you now. 15 Then, even if I cannot come to you soon, you will know how people in God's family should live. That family is the church of God, who lives for ever. God's family, the church, teaches God's true message and keeps it safe.

16 Yes, the message that God has shown us about Jesus Christ is very great. We all agree to this:

God showed him to us as a man.
God's Spirit showed that he always did what was right.
Angels saw him.
People taught his message in many countries of the world.
People in the world believed in him.
God took him up to be with himself in heaven.[a]

False teachers

God's Spirit tells us clearly that, in later times, some people will stop believing the message about Jesus Christ. Instead, they will listen to bad spirits who want people to believe wrong things. They will listen to the message that comes from demons. The people who teach those false things are hypocrites. They no longer understand that what they teach is wrong. They say that it is wrong for anyone to marry. They tell people not to eat certain kinds of food. But God made those foods for people to eat! We should understand God's true message and trust him. Then we will receive the food that he has given us and we will thank him for it. Everything that God has made is good. So we should not refuse anything that he has made. Instead, we should receive it and thank God for it. God has said that it is good. We should pray that he will bless it. Because of that, it becomes good and clean for us to eat.[b]

How Timothy can be a good servant of Christ

You must explain these things to the believers and teach them God's true message. If you do that, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus. Continue to study the message about Jesus that you have already learned. That will help you to be strong. But you must refuse to listen to false stories. Stories like that are not from God and only silly people believe them. Instead, learn to live well in a way that makes God happy. People say this: ‘If a person works to make his body strong and healthy, that will help him a little. But if a person works to live in a way that makes God happy, that will help him much more. It will help that person in his life now on earth. It will also help him in his future life with God in heaven.’ We know that those words are true. Everyone should agree with them. 10 So that is why we work to serve God well. We continue to work, even when we have trouble. We do this because we believe that God will help us. He is the one who lives for ever and who saves all people. Certainly, he saves those who are believers.

Mark 10:23-31

23 Jesus looked round and he said to his disciples, ‘It is very difficult for rich people to let God rule in their lives.’

24 They were very surprised about Jesus' words. Jesus spoke again to them: ‘My friends, it is very difficult for anyone to let God rule in their life. 25 The hole in a needle is very small. A camel cannot go through it! But it is even more difficult than that for a rich person to let God rule in their life.’

26 Then Jesus' disciples were even more surprised. They said to each other, ‘So perhaps God will not save anyone!’

27 Jesus looked at them and he replied, ‘For people, it really is impossible. But God can do it. God can do everything.’

28 Peter said to Jesus, ‘Look! We have left everything that we had. Now we are your disciples.’

29 Jesus said, ‘I tell you this: Some people have left their homes. Or they may have left their brothers or sisters. Or they may have left their mother or their father. Or they may have left their children or their fields. They have done that because of me. And they have done it because of God's good news. 30 Now, in this world, God will give those people many more things than they have left behind, even 100 times more! Yes, they will receive houses and brothers and sisters. They will receive mothers and children and fields. As well as all this, people will be against them. But in the future world, they will live for ever with God. 31 But many people who are very important now will not be important then. And people who are not important now will become very important then.’
