The World Should Praise the Lord

148 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the ·skies [heavens].
    Praise him ·high above the earth [in the heights].
Praise him, all you ·angels [messengers].
    Praise him, all ·you armies of heaven [his hosts; C the angelic army].
Praise him, sun and moon.
    Praise him, all you ·shining stars [L stars of light].
Praise him, ·highest heavens [L heaven of heavens]
    and you waters above the ·sky [heavens].
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    because ·they were created by his command [L he commands and they were created; Gen. 1].
He ·put them in place [L made them stand] forever and ever;
    he made a ·law [statute; requirement; ordinance] that will never ·change [pass].

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you large sea ·animals [monsters; C like Leviathan; 74:12–17; 104:26; Gen. 1:21; Job 3:8; 41; Is. 27:1] and all the ·oceans [deeps],
·lightning [L fire] and hail, snow and ·mist [cloud; or smoke],
    and stormy winds that ·obey him [L do his word],
mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    crawling animals and birds,
11 kings of the earth and all ·nations [peoples],
    princes and all ·rulers [judges] of the earth,
12 young men and women,
    old people and ·children [youth].

13 Praise the name of the Lord,
    because ·he [L his name] alone is ·great [exalted].
    ·He is more wonderful than [L His splendor is over] heaven and earth.
14 God has ·given his people a king [exalted/raised a horn over his people; C an animal’s horn symbolizes power].
    He should be praised by all ·who belong to him [his saints/loyal ones];
he should be praised by the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], the people ·closest to his heart [L nearest to him].

Praise the Lord!

Praise the God of Israel

149 Praise the Lord!

Sing a new song [C celebrating victory; 33:3; 40:3; 96:1; 98:1; 144:9; Is. 42:10; Rev. 5:9; 14:3] to the Lord;
sing his praise in the ·meeting [assembly; congregation] of his ·people [saints; loyal ones].

Let the Israelites ·be happy [rejoice] because of God, [L in] their Maker.
    Let the ·people of Jerusalem [L sons of Zion; C location of the Temple] rejoice ·because [L in] of their King.
They should praise him with dancing.
    They should ·sing praises [make a psalm] to him with tambourines and harps.
The Lord is pleased with his people;
    he ·saves [L endows with salvation/victory] the ·humble [needy].
Let ·those who worship him [the saints/loyal ones] rejoice in his glory [C God’s manifest presence].
    Let them sing for joy even in bed!

Let them ·shout his praise [L exalt God with their throats]
    with their two-edged swords in their hands.
They will ·punish [execute vengeance against] the nations
    and ·defeat [punish] the people.
They will put those kings in chains
    and ·those important men [honored men] in iron bands.
They will ·punish them as God has written [L accomplish a written judgment].
    God is honored by ·all who worship him [his saints/loyal ones].

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord with Music

150 Praise the Lord!

Praise God in his ·Temple [L holy place; or holiness];
    praise him in his ·mighty heaven [L strong firmament; Gen. 1:7].
Praise him for his strength;
    praise him for his [L abundant] greatness.
Praise him with trumpet blasts;
    praise him with harps and lyres.
Praise him with tambourines and dancing;
    praise him with stringed instruments and flutes.
Praise him with loud cymbals;
    praise him with crashing cymbals.
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 114-115

God Brought Israel from Egypt

114 When ·the Israelites [Israel] went out of Egypt,
    the ·people [L house] of Jacob left ·that foreign country [L a people of incomprehensible language].
Then Judah became God’s holy place [Ex. 19:6];
    Israel became ·the land he ruled [his dominion].

The Sea [C Red (or Reed) Sea; Ex. 14–15] looked and ·ran away [fled];
    the Jordan River turned back [Josh. 3].
The mountains ·danced [skipped] like ·sheep [rams]
    and the hills like little lambs.
Sea, why did you ·run away [flee]?
    Jordan, why did you turn back?
Mountains, why did you ·dance [skip] like ·sheep [rams]?
    Hills, why did you ·dance [skip] like little lambs?

Earth, ·shake with fear [writhe; tremble] before the Lord,
    before the God of Jacob.
He turned a rock into a pool of water,
    a hard ·rock [flint] into a spring of water [Ex. 17:1–7; Num. 20:1–13].

The One True God

115 ·It does not belong [L Not to us, not] to us, Lord.
    The glory belongs to ·you [L your name]
because of your ·love [loyalty] and ·loyalty [faithfulness].

Why do the nations ask,
    “Where is their God?”
Our God is in heaven.
    He does what he pleases.
Their idols are made of silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but they cannot speak.
    They have eyes, but they cannot see.
They have ears, but they cannot hear.
    They have noses, but they cannot smell.
They have hands, but they cannot feel.
    They have feet, but they cannot walk.
    No sounds come from their throats.
People who make ·idols [L them] ·will be [or are] like them,
    and so will those who ·trust [have confidence in] them [135:15–18; Is. 44:9–20; 46:6–7; Jer. 10:1–9; Hab. 2:18–19].

·Family of [L O] Israel, ·trust [have confidence in] the Lord;
    he is your helper and your ·protection [L shield].
10 ·Family [L House] of Aaron [C the priests], ·trust [have confidence in] the Lord;
    he is your helper and your ·protection [L shield].
11 You who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7] should ·trust [have confidence in] him;
    he is your helper and your ·protection [L shield].

12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us.
    He will bless the ·family [L house] of Israel;
    he will bless the ·family [L house] of Aaron [C the priests].
13 The Lord will bless those who ·respect [fear] him [Prov. 1:7],
    from the ·smallest [or least] to the greatest.

14 May the Lord ·give you success [make you increase],
    and may he give you and your children ·success [increase].
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth [Gen. 1].

16 Heaven belongs to the Lord,
    but he gave the earth to people.
17 Dead people do not praise the Lord;
    those ·in the grave are silent [L who go down in silence].
18 But we will praise the Lord
    now and forever.

Praise the Lord!

Genesis 7:1-10

The Flood Begins

Then the Lord said to Noah, “I have seen that you ·are the best person [alone are righteous] among ·the people of this time [L this generation], so you and your ·family [household] can go into the ·boat [ark]. Take with you seven pairs, each male with its female, of every kind of clean [C in a ritual sense; Lev. 11] animal, and take one pair, each male with its female, of every kind of unclean animal. Take seven pairs of all the birds of the ·sky [heavens], each male with its female. This will allow all these animals to continue living on the earth after the flood. Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth. It will rain forty days and forty nights, and I will ·wipe off [blot out] from the ·earth [L face of the ground] every living thing that I have made.”

Noah did everything the Lord commanded him.

Noah was six hundred years old when the [L water of the] flood came [L on the earth]. He and his wife and his sons and their wives went into the ·boat [ark] to escape the waters of the flood. The clean animals [7:2], the unclean animals, the birds, and everything that ·crawls [creeps] on the ground came to Noah. They went into the ·boat [ark] in groups of two, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah. 10 Seven days later the ·flood started [L waters of the flood came on the earth].

Genesis 7:17-23

17 ·Water flooded the earth [L The flood continued] for forty days, and as it rose it lifted the ·boat [ark] off the ground. 18 The water continued to rise [L and increase], and the ·boat [ark] floated on ·it above the earth [L the face of the waters]. 19 The water rose so much [L over the earth] that even the highest mountains under the ·sky [heavens] were covered by it. 20 It continued to rise until it was more than ·twenty feet [L fifteen cubits] above the mountains.

21 All ·living things [L flesh] that moved on the earth died. This included all the birds, tame animals, wild animals, and [L swarming] creatures that swarm on the earth, as well as all human beings. 22 So everything on dry land that had the breath of life in ·it [L its nostrils] died. 23 God ·destroyed [blotted/wiped out] from the earth every living thing that was on the ·land [L face of the ground]—every man, animal, ·crawling [creeping] thing, and bird of the ·sky [heavens]. All that ·was left [survived] was Noah and what was with him in the ·boat [ark].

Ephesians 4:1-16

The Unity of the Body

[L Therefore,] As a prisoner [3:1] ·for [because I belong to; or in] the Lord, I urge you to ·live [walk] in a manner worthy of the calling ·you have received [L to which you were called]. ·Always be [or Be completely] humble, gentle, and patient, ·accepting [putting up/bearing with] each other in love. Make every effort to preserve the unity ·of [provided by; available through] the Spirit ·in [through] the ·peace that joins us together [L bond of peace]. There is one body and one Spirit, and God called you to ·have one hope [L one hope of your calling]. There is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. There is one God and Father of everything. ·He rules everything and is everywhere and is in everything [L …who is over all and through all and in all].

Each one of us has been given the ·special gift of grace [L grace; or gift], ·showing how generous Christ is [or in proportion to Christ’s gift; L according to the measure of Christ’s gift]. That is why it says in the Scriptures,

“When he ·went up [ascended] to the heights,
    he ·led a parade of captives [or took captives into captivity],
    and he gave gifts to people [Ps. 68:18].”

When it says, “He ·went up [ascended],” what does it mean? ·It means [L …except] that he first ·came down [descended] to the ·earth [or lower regions, namely the earth; or the depths of the earth; C probably refers to (1) the Incarnation, though possibly (2) Christ’s descent to Hades after his death (1 Pet. 3:19–20), or (3) Christ’s descent through the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2)]. 10 So the one who ·came down [descended] is the same one who ·went up [ascended] above all the heavens. ·Christ did that [L …in order] to fill ·everything with his presence [L all things]. 11 And ·Christ gave gifts to people—he made some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to go and tell the Good News, and some to have the work of caring for and teaching God’s people [L he himself gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors/shepherds, and teachers]. 12 ·Christ gave those gifts to prepare [L …to equip] God’s holy people for the work of serving, to make the body of Christ stronger. 13 This work must continue until we ·are all joined together in the same faith [or all reach unity in the faith] and in the same knowledge of the Son of God. We must become like ·a mature person [or the perfect Man; C Christ], ·growing until we become like Christ and have his perfection [L to the measure of the stature of Christ’s fullness].

14 Then we will no longer be ·babies [children]. We will not be tossed about like a ship that the waves carry one way and then another. We will not be ·influenced by every new teaching [L carried along by every wind of (false) teaching] we hear from people who are trying to ·fool [trick] us. They ·make plans [scheme] and try any kind of trick to fool people into following ·the wrong path [error; false teaching]. 15 ·No! [Instead; Rather] ·Speaking [or Living out; Practicing] the truth with love, we will grow up in every way into Christ, who is the head. 16 ·The whole body depends on Christ, and [L …through/by whom] all the parts of the body are joined and held together. Each ·part [supporting joint/ligament] ·does its own work [performs its function] to make the whole body grow and ·be strong with [to build itself up in] love.

Mark 3:7-19

Many People Follow Jesus(A)

Jesus left with his ·followers [disciples] for the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed him. Also many people came from Judea, from Jerusalem, from Idumea [C located to the south], from the lands across the Jordan River, and from the area of Tyre and Sidon [C located to the north]. When they heard what Jesus was doing, many people came to him. When Jesus saw the crowds, he told his ·followers [disciples] to get a boat ready for him to keep people from ·crowding against [crushing] him. 10 He had healed many people, so all the sick were pushing toward him to touch him. 11 When ·evil [defiling; L unclean; see 1:23] spirits [within people] saw Jesus, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” 12 But Jesus strongly ·warned [rebuked; ordered] them not to tell who he was.

Jesus Chooses His Twelve Apostles(B)

13 Then Jesus went up ·on a mountain [to the hills] and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 Jesus ·chose [appointed] twelve [C paralleling the twelve tribes of Israel] and called them apostles[a] [C “apostle” means a messenger, or someone sent with a commission]. He wanted them to be with him, and he wanted to send them out to preach 15 and to have the authority to ·force [drive; cast] demons out of people. 16 These are the twelve he ·chose [appointed]: Simon (Jesus named him Peter), 17 James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus named them Boanerges, which [C in Aramaic] means “Sons of Thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot [C either religiously zealous, or a (former) member of the revolutionary movement known as Zealots], 19 and Judas Iscariot [C Iscariot probably means “man of Kerioth”], who later ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus.
