Psalm 2

The Lord's king rules[a]

Why are nations making plans to turn against the Lord?
    All their plans will fail!
Kings and rulers decide to work together,
    to fight against the Lord
and the king that he has chosen.
They say, ‘We will not accept their authority over us!
We will get free from their power!’[b]
The Lord who sits on his throne in heaven laughs at them.
He says that their plans are useless.
Then he becomes very angry and he frightens them.
He warns them with strong words and he says,
‘I have put my king on his throne in Zion.[c]
I have put him on my holy mountain.’

I will tell you what the Lord has promised to me, his king.
He said to me, ‘You are my son.
Yes, today I have become your father![d]
Ask me and see what I will do!
I will give you all the nations on the earth.
They will all belong to you.
You will break them with an iron sceptre,
as if they are clay pots.’

10 So, you kings, think carefully!
You who rule the nations of the world, learn this lesson:
11 Respect the Lord and serve him.
    Enjoy his rule with fear!
12 Bend down low in front of his son!
If not, the Lord will be angry.
He will quickly become very angry.
You will suddenly die!
But as for those who serve the Lord as their king,
he blesses them and he takes care of them all.

Psalm 26

This is a song that David wrote.

I do what is right

26 Lord, I always try to do what is right.
I continue to trust you all the time.
So please show that I am not guilty of wrong things.
Test me, Lord, and see how I have lived.
Look into my mind and see my thoughts.
I always know that I can trust you,
    because of your faithful love.
So I live to please you.
I do not become a friend of people who tell lies.
I do not join together with hypocrites.
I keep away from any crowd of evil people.
I do not become a friend of wicked people.

I wash my hands as a sign
    that I live in a pure way.[a]
I will worship you at your altar, Lord.
I will sing aloud to thank you.
I will tell people about all the great things that you have done.
Lord, I love the temple that is your house.
It is the place where we clearly see your glory.

Do not take away my life,
    as you do with sinners.
Do not punish me with death,
    as you do with murderers.
10 Those wicked people are always ready to do evil things.
They use bribes to get what they want.
11 But I always try to do what is right.
Please save me and be kind to me!
12 Now I stand in a safe place.
I will praise the Lord
when his people meet together to worship him.

Isaiah 49:13-23

13 Shout with joy, everything in the sky!
Be happy, everything on the earth!
    Sing loudly, you mountains!
Be happy, because the Lord comforts his people.
He will be kind to his people who have trouble and pain.

14 But Zion's people said,
‘The Lord has left us alone.
The Lord God has forgotten about us.’
15 The Lord replies,
‘Can a mother forget the baby
who drinks milk at her breast?
Can she refuse to be kind to the child
that she has given birth to?
Perhaps those mothers might forget their children.
But I would not ever forget you, Zion.[a]
16 Look! I have written your name on my own hand.
I always see the walls of your city in my mind.
17 Your children will hurry back to you,
    to build you again.
The enemies who destroyed you will go away.
18 Look all round you!
See all your people as they return together.’
The Lord says, ‘I tell you clearly, as the God who lives,
you will be happy with your people.
They will make you beautiful again,
like a bride with her beautiful jewels.
19 Enemies have destroyed your land.
Its towns have become heaps of stones.
But soon your land will be too small for all your people to live in.
The enemies who destroyed you will be far away from you.
20 The children who were born in a foreign land
    will return to you.
You will hear them say,
“This place is too small for us.
Find more room for us to live in.”
21 Then you will think, “Who gave me all these children?
    Who is their father?
I was alone, with no husband.
    They killed my children
or they took them away to a foreign land.
I could no longer give birth.
So where did all these children come from?” ’

22 The Almighty Lord says,

‘Look! I will lift up my hand,
    to call the nations.
I will raise up a flag
as a sign to those people.
Then they will bring back your sons and your daughters.
They will carry them in their arms and on their shoulders.
23 The kings of those nations will take care of your children.
The kings' daughters will feed them.
The rulers will bend down low in front of you,
so that their faces touch the ground.
They will taste the dirt by your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.
I will not disappoint people who wait for me to help them.

Matthew 18:1-14

Who is important in God's kingdom?

18 Soon after this, the disciples came to Jesus and they asked him, ‘Who is the most important person in the kingdom of heaven?’

Jesus called a child to come to him. He made the child stand in the middle of them all. He said, ‘I tell you this: You must change and become like little children. If not, you will never come into the kingdom of heaven. This little child does not think that he is very important. You must also think as he does. Whoever does this will be the most important person in the kingdom of heaven. If anyone accepts a child like this because of me, that person also accepts me.’

Jesus said, ‘A person who believes in me may not seem important. But you should never make that person do wrong things.[a] Do not do that! It would be better for you if someone tied a big stone round your neck. Then you would sink deep down into the sea and die. Some things in this world will cause people to do wrong things. You can be sure that bad things will happen. But it will be very bad for the person who makes these things happen.

If your hand or your foot causes you to do wrong things, you should cut it off. You should throw it away. It is better to have only one hand or one foot and to have God's true life. It will be much worse to keep both your hands and both your feet and still do wrong things. Then God will throw you into hell, where the fire always burns. If your eye causes you to do wrong things, then you should take it out. You should throw it away. It is better to have only one of your eyes and to have God's true life. It will be much worse if you keep both your eyes but then God throws you into hell. There the fire always burns.

10 Be careful! Do not think that any of these little people are not important. I tell you this. They have angels who watch over them. Those angels are always standing in front of my Father in heaven.[b]

11 [I, the Son of Man, came to look for those who are far away from God.][c]

12 Think about a man who has 100 sheep. He discovers that one of his sheep is not there with the others. What does he do? He leaves all his other sheep on the hills. He goes to look for the one lost sheep. 13 And I tell you this: If he finds that lost sheep, he will be very happy. All the other sheep are safe together. But they do not make him as happy as this one sheep does. 14 God, your Father in heaven, is like that shepherd. He does not want any of these little people to be lost, not even one of them.’[d]

Psalm 19

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

God teaches us about himself

19 The heavens show us how great God is.
The sky above shows his good work.
Each day speaks about God,
until the next day continues the story.
Every night tells us how great God is.
They do not use words to speak with.
    Nobody hears their voice.
But their message goes round all the earth.
All the world can understand what they say.

God has made a home for the sun in the sky.
Each morning, the sun comes out,
like a happy man who has just married.
It comes out,
like a strong man who wants to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens.
It travels in a big circle to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.[a]

The law of the Lord is perfect.
    It makes us strong again.
We can trust what the Lord teaches us.
He helps ordinary people to be wise.
The Lord's rules are always right.
If we obey them, they make us really happy.
The Lord's commands are completely good.
They show us how to live in a good way.
It is right for us to respect the Lord.
    That will always help us.
The laws of the Lord are true.
    They are right and fair.
10 They are more valuable than gold,
    even the best gold.
They are sweeter than the best honey.
11 Your laws warn us to do what is right.
If we obey them, they are a great help to us.[b]

12 Nobody realizes every time they do something wrong.
Please forgive me for the sins that I do not know about.
13 Lord, stop me doing things that I know are wrong.
Do not let those sins rule my life.
Then I will not be guilty.
I will not have turned against you in a bad way.

14 Lord, I want to make you happy.
I want my words and my thoughts to please you.
You are my strong Rock
    and you are my Redeemer.[c]

Psalm 126

A song to sing as we climb.

The Lord has done great things for us![a]

126 When the Lord turned us round,
so that we enjoyed a good life in Zion again,
we thought that we were dreaming!
At that time, we laughed a lot.
We shouted because we were so happy!
People in other countries said to each other,
‘The Lord has done great things for them!’
Yes, the Lord has done great things for us.
    So we are very happy.
Lord, please bless us like before.
That will be like streams of water that return to the desert.[b]
When people went out to plant their seeds,
    they were crying.
But they will be happy when they bring in the harvest!
People were weeping when they took their bags of seeds to plant.[c]
But when they carry their crops back home,
they will shout because they are so happy![d]

Mark 10:13-16

Jesus prays for some children

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus. They wanted him to put his hands on each child's head. The disciples told the people that they should not do that. 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was angry. He said to them, ‘Do not stop the children. Let them come to me. People must become like these children so that God can rule their lives. That is what the kingdom of God is like. 15 I tell you this: A person must become like a little child for God to rule in his life. If he does not become like a child, he will not come into the kingdom of God.’ 16 Then Jesus took hold of the children. He put his hands on each of them and he asked God to bless them.
