Book of Common Prayer
33 He turneth the floods to a wilderness, and the springs of waters into dryness,
34 And a fruitful land into [a]barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35 Again he [b]turneth the wilderness into pools of water, and the dry land into water springs.
36 And there he placeth the hungry, and they build a city to dwell in,
37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which bring forth fruitful [c]increase.
38 For he blesseth them, and they multiply exceedingly, and he diminisheth not their cattle.
39 [d]Again men are diminished, and brought low by oppression, evil and sorrow.
40 He poureth [e]contempt upon princes, and causeth them to err in desert places out of the way.
41 Yet he raiseth up the poor out of misery, and maketh him families like a flock of sheep.
42 The [f]righteous shall see it, and rejoice, and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Who is wise that he may observe these things? for they shall understand the loving kindness of the Lord.
108 This Psalm is composed of two other Psalms before the seven and fiftieth and the sixtieth. The matter here contained is, 1 That David giveth himself with heart and voice to praise the Lord, 7 and assureth himself of the promise of God concerning his kingdom over Israel, and his power against other nations: 11 Who though he seem to forsake us for a time, yet he alone will in the end cast down our enemies.
A song or Psalm of David.
1 O God, mine heart is [g]prepared, so is [h]my tongue: I will sing and give praise.
2 Awake viol and harp, I will awake early.
3 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the [i]people, and I will sing unto thee among the nations.
4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.
5 [j]Exalt thyself, O God, above the heavens, and let thy glory be upon all the earth,
6 That thy beloved may be delivered: [k]help with thy right hand and hear me.
7 God hath spoken in his [l]holiness: therefore I will rejoice, I shall divide Shechem and measure the valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead shall be mine, and Manasseh shall be mine: Ephraim also shall be the strength of mine head: Judah is my lawgiver.
9 (A)Moab shall be my washpot: over Edom will I cast out my shoe: upon Palestine will I triumph.
10 Who will lead me into the strong city? who will bring me unto Edom?
11 [m]Wilt not thou, O God, which hadst forsaken us, and didst not go forth, O God, with our armies?
12 Give us help against trouble: for vain is the help of man.
13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he shall tread down our enemies.
33 1 He exhorteth good men to praise God, for that he hath not only created all things, and by his providence governeth the same, but also is faithful in his promises, 10 he understandeth man’s heart, and scattereth the counsel of the wicked, 16 so that no man can be preserved by any creature or man’s strength: by they, that put their confidence in his mercy, shall be preserved from all adversities.
1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for it [a]becometh upright men to be thankful.
2 Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with viol and [b]instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing unto him a new song: sing cheerfully with a loud voice.
4 For the [c]word of the Lord is righteous, and all his [d]works are faithful.
5 He [e]loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.
6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
7 He [f]gathereth the waters of the sea together as upon an heap, and layeth up the depths in his treasures.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all them that dwell in the world, fear him.
9 For he spake, and it was done: he commanded, and it [g]stood.
10 The Lord breaketh the [h]counsel of the heathen, and bringeth to nought the devices of the people.
11 The counsel of the Lord shall stand forever, and the thoughts of his heart throughout all ages.
12 Blessed is that nation, whose [i]God is the Lord: even the people that he hath chosen for his inheritance.
13 The Lord [j]looketh down from heaven, and beholdeth all the children of men.
14 From the habitation of his dwelling, he beholdeth all them that dwell in the earth.
15 He [k]fashioneth their hearts every one, and understandeth all their works.
16 The [l]King is not saved by the multitude of an host, neither is the mighty man delivered by great strength.
17 A horse is a vain help, and shall not deliver any by his great strength.
18 Behold, [m]the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, and upon them that trust in his mercy,
19 To deliver their souls from death, and to preserve them in famine.
20 [n]Our soul waiteth for the Lord: for he is our help and our shield.
21 Surely our heart shall rejoice in him, because we trusted in his holy Name.
22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we trusted in thee.
21 This is the word that the Lord hath spoken against him, O [a]Virgin daughter of Zion, he hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn: O daughter of Jerusalem, he hath shaken his head at thee.
22 Whom hast thou railed on? and whom hast thou blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even [b]against the holy One of Israel.
23 By thy messengers thou hast railed on the Lord, and said, By the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the top of the mountains, by the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the high cedars thereof, and the fair fir trees thereof, and I will go into the [c]lodging of his borders, and into the forest of his [d]Carmel.
24 I have dug and drunk the waters of others, and with the plant of my feet have I dried all the [e]floods closed in.
25 Hast thou not heard, how I have of old time made it, and have formed it long ago? [f]and should I now bring it, that it should be destroyed, and laid on ruinous heaps, as cities defensed?
26 Whose [g]inhabitants have small power, and are afraid, and confounded: they are like the grass of the field, and green herb, or grass on the house tops, or as corn blasted before it be grown.
27 I know thy dwelling, yea, thy going out and thy coming in, and thy fury against me.
28 And because thou ragest against me, and thy tumult is come up to mine ears, I will put mine [h]hook in thy nostrils, and my bridle in thy lips, and will bring thee back again the same way thou camest.
29 And this shall be a [i]sign unto thee, O Hezekiah, Thou shalt eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and the next year such as grow without sowing, and the third year sow ye and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
30 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah, shall again take [j]root downward, and bear fruit upward.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and some that shall escape out of mount Zion: the [k]zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.
32 Wherefore thus saith the Lord, concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not enter into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a mount against it:
33 But he shall return the way he came, and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord.
34 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for David my servant’s sake.
35 ¶ (A)And the same night the Angel of the Lord went out and smote in the camp of Assyria an hundred four score and five thousand: so when they rose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went his way, and returned and dwelt in Nineveh.
10 1 If God spared not the Jews, neither will he spare those who are of like condition, 3, 4 touching the outward signs of his grace. 14 That it is absurd, that such should be partakers of the table of the devils, who are partakers of the Lord’s Supper. 24 To have consideration of our neighbor in things indifferent.
1 Moreover, [a]brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, that all our [b]fathers were under (A)that cloud, and all passed through that (B)sea,
2 [c]And were all [d]baptized unto [e]Moses, in that cloud, and in that sea,
3 (C)And did all eat the [f]same spiritual [g]meat,
4 (D)And did all drink the same spiritual drink (for they drank of the spiritual Rock that [h]followed them: and the Rock was [i]Christ.)
5 But with many of them God was not pleased: for they were (E)overthrown in the wilderness.
6 [j]Now these things are our [k]examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things (F)as they also lusted.
7 Neither be ye idolaters as were some of them, as it is written, (G)The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and fell in one (H)day three and twenty thousand.
9 Neither let us tempt [l]Christ, as some of them also tempted him, and (I)were destroyed of serpents.
10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them (J)also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
11 Now all these things came unto them for examples, and were written to admonish us, upon whom the [m]ends of the world are come.
12 [n]Wherefore, let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall.
13 There hath no temptation taken you, but such as appertaineth to [o]man: and God is faithful, which will not suffer you to be tempted above that you be able, but will even [p]give the issue with the temptation, that ye may be able to bear it.
18 ¶ (A)And when Jesus saw great multitudes of people about him, he commanded them to go [a]over the water.
19 [b]Then came there a certain Scribe, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20 But Jesus said unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have [c]nests, but the Son of man hath not whereon to rest his head.
21 ¶ [d]And another of his disciples said unto him, Master, suffer me first to go, and bury my father.
22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead.
23 ¶ (B)[e]And when he was entered into the ship, his disciples followed him.
24 And behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, so that the ship was covered with waves: but he was asleep.
25 Then his disciples came, and awoke him, saying, Master, save us: we perish.
26 And he said unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea: and so there was a great calm.
27 And the men marveled, saying, What man is this, that both the winds and the sea obey him?
