Psalm 8[a]

The Majesty of God and the Dignity of Human Beings

For the director.[b] “Upon the gittith.” A psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,
    how glorious is your name[c] in all the earth!
    You have exalted your majesty above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of newborn babes and infants[d]
    you have brought forth praise
as a bulwark against your foes,
    to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look up at your heavens
    that have been formed by your fingers,
the moon and the stars
    that you set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
    the son of man[e] that you care for him?
You have made him a little less than the angels[f]
    and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands
    and placed everything under his feet:
all sheep and oxen
    as well as the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, the fish of the sea,
    and whatever swims in the paths of the sea.
10 Lord, our Lord,
    how glorious is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 148

Psalm 148[a]

Song of the Universe

[b]Alleluia.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    offer praise to him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels;
    offer praise to him, all his hosts![c]
Praise him, sun and moon;
    offer praise to him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,[d]
    and you waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name[e] of the Lord,
    for it was at his command that they were created.
He established them in place forever and ever;
    he issued a law that will never pass away.[f]
[g]Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you sea monsters and ocean depths,
fire and hail, snow and clouds,
    storm winds that carry out his word,[h]
all mountains and hills,
    all fruit trees and cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    creeping creatures and flying birds,[i]
11 kings of the earth and all nations,
    princes and all rulers on the earth,
12 young men and women,
    the elderly, as well as children.[j]
13 [k]Let them all praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his majesty is above the earth and the heavens.[l]
14 He has raised high a horn[m] for his people,
    to the glory of all his saints,
    for the people of Israel who are close to him.
Alleluia.

Job 38:1-7

The Intervention of God[a]

The Lord’s First Speech

Chapter 38

Gird Up Your Loins.[b] Then from the heart of the storm the Lord answered Job:

“Who is this who obscures my intentions
    with words devoid of knowledge?
Gird up your loins now like a man.
    I will ask you questions,
    and you will give me the answers.

A1: The Mysteries of the Cosmos

Where Were You When I Laid the Earth’s Foundations?

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?
    Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements? Do you know?
    Who stretched out the measuring line over it?
What supports the pillars at its bases?
    Who laid its cornerstone
while the morning stars sang in unison
    and the sons of God shouted for joy?

Hebrews 1

Chapter 1

Prologue[a]

In previous times, God spoke to our ancestors
    in many and various ways
    through the Prophets,[b]
but in these last days he has spoken to us
    through his Son,
whom he appointed heir of all things
    and through whom he created the universe.
He is the reflection of God’s glory
    and the perfect expression of his very being,[c]
    sustaining all things by his powerful word.
Achieving purification from sins,
    he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
So he became as far superior to the angels
    as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

The Son of God, Superior to the Angels[d]

Messianic Enthronement.[e] For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    this day I have begotten you”?

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”?[f]

And again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all the angels of God pay him homage.”

Of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels winds,
    and his servants flames of fire.”

But of the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
    and a righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and detested wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has anointed you
    with the oil of gladness far above your companions.”

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a cloak;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you are ever the same,
    and your years will have no end.”

13 But to which of the angels has he ever said,

“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies your footstool”?

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent forth to serve for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

Psalm 34

Psalm 34[a]

Presence of God, Protector of the Righteous

Of David. When he pretended to be mad before Abimelech, who forced him to depart.[b]

[c]I will bless the Lord at all times;
    his praise will be continually on my lips.
My soul[d] will glory in the Lord;
    let the lowly hear and be glad.
Magnify the Lord with me;
    let us exalt his name together.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
    he set me free from all my fears.
Look to him and you will be radiant;
    your faces will never be covered with shame.
In my anguish[e] I cried out;
    the Lord heard my plea,
    and I was saved from all my troubles.
The angel of the Lord[f] encamps around those who fear God,
    and he delivers them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
    blessed[g] is the man who takes refuge in him.
10 Fear the Lord,[h] you his saints;
    nothing is lacking for those who fear him.
11 The powerful[i] suffer want and go hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord want for no good thing.
12 [j]Come, my children,[k] and listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
13 Who among you delights in life
    and desires many years to enjoy prosperity?[l]
14 Then keep your tongue[m] from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.
15 Shun evil and do good;
    seek peace and pursue it.
16 [n]The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are open to their cry.
17 The face of the Lord is turned against those who do evil,
    to erase all memory of them from the earth.
18 [o]The righteous call out, and the Lord hears them;
    he rescues them from all their troubles.
19 The Lord remains close to the brokenhearted,
    and he saves those whose spirit is crushed.
20 [p]The misfortunes of the righteous man are many,
    but the Lord delivers him,[q] from all of them.
21 He watches with care over all his bones;
    not a single one will be broken.
22 [r]Evil will bring death to the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
23 The Lord redeems the lives of those who serve him;
    no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 150

Psalm 150[a]

Harmonious Praise of God

Alleluia.

Praise God in his sanctuary;
    praise him in the firmament of his power.[b]
Praise him for his awesome acts,[c]
    praise him for his immeasurable greatness.
[d]Praise him with the sound of the trumpet,
    praise him with the harp and lyre.
Praise him with tambourines and dancing,
    praise him with strings and flutes.
Praise him with clanging cymbals,
    praise him with crashing cymbals.
Let everything that breathes
    offer praise to the Lord.
Alleluia.[e]

Psalm 104

Psalm 104[a]

Praise of God the Creator

Bless the Lord, O my soul.
    Lord, my God, you are indeed very great.
You are clothed in majesty and splendor,
    wrapped in light[b] as in a robe.
You have stretched out the heavens like a tent;
    you have established your palace[c] upon the waters.
You make the clouds serve as your chariot;
    you ride forth on the wings of the wind.
You have appointed the winds as your messengers
    and flames of fire[d] as your ministers.
You established the earth on its foundations
    so that it will remain unshaken forever.[e]
You covered it with the deep like a cloak;
    the waters rose above the mountains.
At your rebuke[f] the waters took to flight;
    at the sound of your thunder they fled in terror.
They rose up to the mountains
    and flowed down to the valleys,[g]
    to the place that you had designated for them.
You established a boundary that they were not to cross
    so that they would never again cover the earth.
10 [h]You made springs gush forth in the valleys
    and flow between the mountains.
11 They supply water to every beast of the field,
    and from them the wild asses quench their thirst.
12 On the banks the birds of the air build nests
    and sing among the branches.
13 [i]From your dwelling you water the mountains,
    enriching the earth with the fruit of your labor.
14 You provide grass for the cattle,
    and the plants for man to cultivate.
You bring forth food from the earth
15     and wine to gladden the heart[j] of man,
oil to make his face shine
    and bread to strengthen his body.
16 The trees of the Lord have fruit in abundance,
    the cedars of Lebanon[k] that he planted.
17 In them the birds build their nests;
    in the fir trees the stork makes its home.
18 The high mountains are inhabited by the wild goats;
    in the rocky crags the badgers[l] find refuge.
19 You created the moon that marks the seasons
    and the sun that knows its time for setting.[m]
20 You bring on darkness, and it is night,
    when all the beasts of the forests go on the prowl.
21 The young lions[n] roar for their prey,
    seeking their food from God.
22 When the sun rises, they steal away
    and return to their lairs to rest.
23 People go forth to their work
    and to their labor until darkness descends.
24 [o]How countless are your works, O Lord;
    by your wisdom you have made them all;
    the earth abounds with your creatures.
25 There is the sea, vast and broad,
    filled with numberless species,
    living creatures both great and small.
26 There the ships sail forth,
    and the Leviathan[p] that you formed to play therein.
27 [q]All of them look to you
    to give them their food at the appropriate time.[r]
28 [s]When you provide it for them,
    they gather it up;
when you open your hand,
    they are filled with good things.
29 When you turn away your face,[t]
    they are dismayed;
when you take away their breath,
    they die and return to the dust.
30 When you send forth your Spirit,[u]
    they are created,
    and you renew the face of the earth.
31 [v]May the glory of the Lord abide forever,
    and may the Lord rejoice in his works.[w]
32 When he looks at the earth, it quakes;
    when he touches the mountains, they smoke.[x]
33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;[y]
    I will sing praise to my God while I have life.
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,
    for I find my joy in the Lord.
35 May sinners be banished from the earth,
    and may the wicked no longer exist.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.[z]
Alleluia.

Mark 13:21-27

21 False Messiahs and False Prophets.[a]“Therefore, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise, and they will perform signs and wonders to lead astray God’s chosen ones, if that were possible. 23 Be on your guard! I have forewarned you about everything.

24 The Coming of the Son of Man.[b]“But in those days, following that distress,

the sun will be darkened
    and the moon will not give forth its light,
25 and the stars will be falling from the sky,
    and the heavenly powers will be shaken.

26 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory. 27 And he will send forth his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
