Psalm 56-58

This is for the music leader, and he should use special music.

David wrote this prayer when the Philistines took hold of him in Gath.

Trust in God[a]

56 God, please be kind to me, and help me,
    because people are fighting me.
My enemies are attacking me every day.
They chase me all the time!
Those proud people want to catch me,
and there are many of them!
But when I am afraid,
    I will trust in you.
By God's help, I will praise his word.
By God's help, I will trust in him.
    I will not be afraid.
People can do nothing to hurt me![b]
All the time, they bring trouble on me.
They are always thinking of ways to hurt me.
They hide and they watch me.
They watch me wherever I go,
and they hope to kill me.
God, they want to do wicked things,
    so punish them!
Destroy these people,
because you are angry with them.
Every time that I am upset,
    you know about it.
Put all my tears in your bottle!
Yes, write down every tear in your book.[c]
When I call to you for help,
    my enemies will turn back.
I am sure of this: God is with me,
    to fight for me.
10 By God's help, I will praise his promise.
Yes, by the Lord's help,
    I will praise his word.
11 I am not afraid,
    because I trust in God.
People can do nothing to hurt me.
12 I have made special promises to you, God,
and I will do what I have promised.
I will offer to you a sacrifice to say ‘thank you’.
13 You have saved my life from death.
You keep me safe so that I do not fall.
As a result, I will serve you, God,
as you give me light to live here on earth.

This is for the music leader, and he should use special music.

David wrote this prayer when he ran away from King Saul to hide in a cave.

A prayer for help[d]

57 God, please be kind to me and help me!
    Please help me!
I have come to you to keep me safe.
Until the danger has gone, keep me near to you,
in the way that birds protect their babies under their wings.
I will call to the Most High God to help me.
He is the God who stands beside me.
He will send help from heaven
    and he will save me.
He will punish the people who attack me.
Selah.
God will show me his faithful love,
and he will do what he has promised.
My enemies are all round me,
    like hungry lions!
I must lie down among wild animals,
    that want to eat me!
They are men who use spears and arrows
    to bite like teeth.
They use their tongues to hurt people,
    like sharp swords.
God, show how great you are,
    high above the sky!
Let everybody on the earth see your glory!
My enemies have prepared a trap to catch me.
    That makes me very upset.
They have dug a deep hole on the path where I walk.
But they have fallen into it themselves!
Selah.
God, I have decided to trust you always.
    Yes, I will trust you!
I will sing songs to praise you!
I will wake up now!
I will pick up my harp and my lyre.
I will make music as the sun rises![e]
My Lord, I will thank you
in front of all the people.
I will sing to praise you,
    so that all nations hear.
10 Your faithful love is great,
    higher than the skies.
Your truth reaches beyond the clouds.
11 God, show how great you are,
    high above the sky!
Let everybody on the earth see your glory!

This is for the music leader, and he should use special music.

David wrote this prayer.

God will judge all people[f]

58 Do you rulers really say what is right?
Do you judge people in a fair way?
No! You do not!
You like to think of evil things to do.
You make cruel things happen
    everywhere in the land.
Wicked people do wrong things from their birth.
As soon as they are born,
    they start telling lies.
Their words hurt people
    like a snake's poison.
They listen to nobody,
    like a deaf cobra.
It does not obey the voice of the magician,
even if he sings very well![g]
God, break the teeth of my enemies!
Yes, Lord, break into pieces
    the teeth of those lions!
Cause them to run away like water and disappear.
Cause them to die like dry grass in hot weather.
Cause them to be like a worm that melts as it moves along.
Cause them to be like a child that is born dead
and never sees the light of day.
Remove them quickly,
more quickly than pots become hot over a fire of thorn bushes.[h]
10 When God punishes those wicked people,
righteous people will be very happy.
They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked people!
11 People who see it will say,
‘It is true! God helps good people!
There is a God who judges people on earth in a fair way.’

Psalm 64-65

David wrote this song for the music leader.

God will keep us safe[a]

64 God, please listen to me
as I tell you about my troubles.
Keep me safe from my enemies
    when they attack me.
When evil men think of ways to hurt me,
hide me in a safe place.
Those people work together as a group
    to do wicked things.
Their tongues are like
    sharp swords that hurt people.
Their cruel words are like
arrows that they shoot at people.
They hide in secret places,
and they quickly shoot lies at good people.
They are not afraid that anyone will punish them.
They help each other to do evil things.
They decide where they will hide their traps,
and they say, ‘Nobody will see them!’
They think of wicked ideas to hurt people.
They say, ‘That is a great idea!’[b]
Nobody really understands what people think
    deep inside themselves.
But God will punish them!
He will suddenly shoot an arrow at them
and it will hurt them a lot.[c]
Their own evil words will turn against them
    and make them fall.
Everyone who sees them will shake their heads.
People will be afraid.
They will say, ‘Look at what God has done!’
They will think carefully about it all.
10 But people who serve the Lord should be happy
because of what he has done.
They should trust him to keep them safe.
Good, honest people should praise God,
    because he is great!

This psalm is a song that David wrote for the music leader.

We trust God to save us[d]

65 God, it is right for us to praise you in Zion.
There, we will offer to you
the gifts that we have promised.
You answer our prayers.
All of us must come to you,
    because of our many sins.
Our sins are too heavy for us to carry,
but you forgive the bad things that we do against you.[e]
You have blessed each person that you have chosen.
You let them live near to you in your home.
The good things that are in your holy temple
    will make us very happy!
God, you are the one who saves us!
You answer our prayers,
and you do great things to rescue us.
People from everywhere on earth trust in you,
even those who live far away across the seas.
You used your power to make the mountains,
and you showed how strong you are.
You stop the seas from being angry,
so that their waters make no noise.[f]
You do the same with the angry nations.
People who live far away see
the great things that you have done.
It makes them afraid.
Everywhere on earth, east and west,
people sing happy songs to praise you.
You take care of the land.
You send rain to make the earth good for plants.
Your rivers are full of water.
You cause the earth to give good crops
so that the people have grain to eat.
10 When people plough their fields,
you send rain to make the earth wet.
You make the ground soft with the rain,
    so that crops grow there.
11 Every year at harvest time,
you bless people with lots of good things.
Everywhere that you go,
    there is plenty of food.[g]
12 Fresh grass covers the fields in the wilderness.
There are plenty of good things all over the hills,
so that people are very happy.
13 The fields are full of sheep.
The valleys are covered with crops.
Everywhere seems to shout and sing for joy!

1 Kings 21:1-16

Naboth's vineyard

21 Naboth lived in a town called Jezreel. He had a vineyard in Jezreel, near to the palace of Ahab, the king of Samaria. King Ahab said to Naboth, ‘Give me your vineyard. I want to grow vegetables in it, because it is near to my palace. I will give you a better vineyard instead of that one. Or, if you want, I will pay you its value in money.’ Naboth replied to Ahab, ‘The Lord will never allow that to happen! It belongs to me because it belonged to my ancestors.’[a]

So Ahab went home to his palace. He was angry and upset because of what Naboth had said. He had said, ‘I will not sell you my vineyard that belonged to my ancestors.’ Ahab lay on his bed. He covered his face and he would not eat any food.

Ahab's wife, Jezebel, came in to his room. She asked him, ‘Why are you so upset? Why do you refuse to eat anything?’ Ahab answered her, ‘It is because of Naboth, the man from Jezreel. I said to him, “Sell your vineyard to me. Or, if you want, I will give you another vineyard instead of that one.” But he said, “I will not give you my vineyard.” ’

Jezebel said, ‘You are the king who rules Israel! Now get up from your bed and eat something. Do not be upset! I will get Naboth's vineyard for you.’

Jezebel wrote some letters as if King Ahab had written them. She used his special seal as a mark on them. Then she sent them to the older leaders and important men who lived in Jezreel with Naboth. This is what she wrote in those letters: ‘Choose a day for everyone to fast. Give Naboth a seat where the people can see him. 10 Put two wicked men in seats near him. Tell them to accuse Naboth that he has insulted God and the king. Then take him out. Throw stones at him until he is dead.’

11 So the leaders and the important men who lived in Naboth's city, obeyed Jezebel. They did what she commanded them to do in the letters that she sent to them. 12 They chose a day for the people to fast. They put Naboth in a seat where the people could see him. 13 Then two wicked men came and they sat near to him. They accused Naboth so that the people could all hear them. They said, ‘Naboth has insulted God and the king.’ So the people took him outside the city. They threw stones at him until he was dead. 14 Then the city's leaders sent a message to Jezebel. They told her, ‘The people have killed Naboth with stones.’

15 When Jezebel heard that Naboth was dead, she said to Ahab, ‘Get up from your bed! Go to Jezreel and take Naboth's vineyard for yourself. He refused to sell it to you when he was alive. But now he is dead.’ 16 When Ahab knew that Naboth was dead, he got up from his bed. He went to Naboth's vineyard to take it for himself.

1 Corinthians 1:1-19

Paul says ‘Hello’

This letter is from me, Paul. God chose me to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. That is what he wanted. Our Christian friend Sosthenes is with me here as I write to you.

I am sending this letter to you, the people of God's church in Corinth. God has made you clean because you belong to Christ Jesus. He has chosen you to be his special people. So you join together with all people everywhere who worship our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is their Lord, as he is our Lord.

I pray that God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, will continue to help you. I pray that they will give you peace in your minds.

Paul thanks God

I always thank God because of you. I thank him because he has been very kind to you. He has helped you like that because you belong to Christ Jesus. As a result, God has given you all the things that you need. You are able to speak everything that he wants you to speak. You are able to understand everything that he wants you to know. In that way, God has shown you that the message we told you about Christ is true. As a result, God has given you every spiritual gift that you need. God has blessed you with those gifts as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to return. God will also keep you safe and strong until the end. Then, on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns, you will not be guilty of anything wrong. God always does what he has promised to do. He has chosen you to be friends with his Son, Jesus Christ, who is our Lord.

Christians must not quarrel

10 My Christian friends, I tell you this with the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ: ‘Please agree with each other. Do not become separate groups. Be united and think about things in the same way.’

11 Some people from Chloe's house have told me news about you. My friends, they say that you are quarrelling among yourselves. 12 It happens like this: One of you says, ‘I belong to Paul's group.’ Another person says, ‘I belong to Apollos's group.’ Another person says, ‘I belong to Peter's group.’ And another person says, ‘I belong to Christ's group.’

13 You should not speak like that! It seems that you are breaking Christ into several parts. I, Paul, did not die on a cross to save you. When they baptized you, it was not on my behalf. 14 I thank God that I myself did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius. 15 So none of you can say, ‘I belong to Paul's group because he baptized me.’ 16 (Now I remember that I also baptized Stephanas and his family. I cannot remember that I baptized anyone else.) 17 Christ did not send me to baptize people. But he did send me to tell God's good news to people. When I speak his message, I do not use clever words. It is Christ's death on the cross that has power to save people. I do not want to spoil that power with clever words.

Christ's death on the cross

18 Some people think that the message about Christ's death on the cross is silly. Those people are destroying themselves. But it is different for us, the people that God is saving. The message about the cross shows us God's power to save us.

19 It says in the Bible:

‘I, God, will destroy all the clever thoughts of wise people.
I will show that their clever ideas are useless.’[a]

Matthew 4:1-11

The Devil tries to cause Jesus to do wrong things

Then the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. While he was there, the Devil came to him. He tried to cause Jesus to do wrong things.[a] Jesus did not eat anything for 40 days and 40 nights. At the end of this time, he was very hungry.

Then the Devil came to Jesus and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, speak to these stones. Tell them to become bread.’ But Jesus replied, ‘No! The Bible says that food alone cannot cause people to live. They need to hear every word that God speaks. That is what gives them true life.’[b]

Then the Devil led Jesus to Jerusalem. He made him stand on the highest part of the temple. He said to Jesus, ‘If you are the Son of God, jump down from here to the ground. You know that the Bible says:

“God will tell his angels to keep you safe.
They will hold you safely in their hands.
They will not let you hurt your foot on a stone”.’[c]

Jesus replied, ‘No! The Bible also says, “Do not test the Lord God, to see if he will save you”.’[d]

Then the Devil led Jesus up a very high mountain. He showed Jesus all the countries in the whole world. They were very great and beautiful. The Devil said, ‘I will give you power over all these countries. Just go down on your knees in front of me. Worship me and I will give it all to you.’

10 Jesus then said to him, ‘Satan, go away from me! The Bible says, “Only worship your Lord God. He is the only one that you should obey”.’

11 Then the Devil left Jesus alone. Immediately angels came to Jesus and they took care of him.
