Book of Common Prayer
We Will Boast in the Name of Yahweh
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
20 May Yahweh answer you (A)in the day of distress!
May the (B)name of the (C)God of Jacob set you securely on high!
2 May He send you help (D)from the sanctuary
And (E)uphold you from Zion!
3 May He (F)remember all your meal offerings
And (G)find your burnt offering [a]acceptable! [b]Selah.
4 May He grant you your (H)heart’s desire
And (I)fulfill all your [c]counsel!
5 [d]We will (J)sing for joy over your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will (K)set up our banners.
May Yahweh (L)fulfill all your petitions.
6 Now (M)I know that Yahweh saves His anointed;
He will (N)answer him from His holy heaven
With the [e](O)saving might of His right hand.
7 Some boast in chariots and some in (P)horses,
But (Q)we will [f]boast in the name of Yahweh, our God.
8 They have (R)bowed down and fallen,
But we have (S)risen and stood upright.
9 [g](T)Save, O Yahweh;
May the (U)King answer us in the day we call.
The King Trusts in Yahweh
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
21 O Yahweh, in Your strength the king will (V)be glad,
And in Your [h]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
2 You have (W)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. [i]Selah.
3 For You (X)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (Y)crown of fine gold on his head.
4 He asked life of You,
You (Z)gave it to him,
(AA)Length of days forever and ever.
5 His (AB)glory is great through Your [j]salvation,
(AC)Splendor and majesty You bestow upon him.
6 For You make him [k]most (AD)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (AE)with gladness in Your presence.
7 For the king (AF)trusts in Yahweh,
And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (AG)he will not be shaken.
8 Your hand will (AH)find out all your enemies;
Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them (AI)as a fiery oven in the time of your [l]anger;
Yahweh will (AJ)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (AK)fire will devour them.
10 Their [m]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
And their (AL)seed from among the sons of men.
11 Though they [n](AM)intended evil against You
And (AN)devised a scheme,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (AO)make them turn their back;
You will [o]aim (AP)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Yahweh, in Your strength;
We will (AQ)sing and praise Your might.
You Are a Priest Forever
Of David. A Psalm.
110 (A)Yahweh says to my Lord:
“(B)Sit at My right hand
Until I put (C)Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”
2 Yahweh will stretch forth Your strong (D)scepter from Zion, saying,
“(E)Have dominion in the midst of Your enemies.”
3 Your (F)people [a]will offer themselves freely in the day of Your [b]power;
(G)In the splendor of holiness, from the womb of the dawn,
The (H)dew of Your youthfulness will be Yours.
4 (I)Yahweh has sworn and will (J)not [c]change His mind,
“You are a (K)priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is (L)at Your right hand;
He [d]will (M)crush kings in the (N)day of His anger.
6 He will (O)render justice among the nations,
He [e]will fill them with (P)corpses,
He [f]will (Q)crush the [g]head that is over the wide earth.
7 He will (R)drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He will (S)lift up His head.
I Love Yahweh
116 (A)I love Yahweh, because He (B)hears
My voice and my supplications.
2 Because He has (C)inclined His ear to me,
So I shall call upon Him in all my days.
3 The (D)cords of death encompassed me
And the [a]distresses of Sheol found me;
I found distress and sorrow.
4 Then (E)I called upon the name of Yahweh:
“O Yahweh, I beseech You, [b](F)provide my soul escape!”
5 (G)Gracious is Yahweh, and (H)righteous;
And our God is (I)compassionate.
6 Yahweh keeps (J)the simple;
I was (K)brought low, and He saved me.
7 Return to your (L)rest, O my soul,
For Yahweh has (M)dealt bountifully with you.
8 For You have (N)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
My feet from stumbling.
9 I shall walk before Yahweh
In the [c](O)land of the living.
10 I (P)believed when I said,
“I am (Q)greatly afflicted.”
11 I (R)said in my alarm,
“(S)All men are liars.”
12 What shall I (T)give to Yahweh in return
For all His (U)bountiful dealings [d]with me?
13 I shall lift up the (V)cup of [e]salvation
And (W)call upon the name of Yahweh.
14 I shall (X)pay my vows to Yahweh,
Oh may it be (Y)in the presence of all His people.
15 (Z)Precious in the sight of Yahweh
Is the death of His holy ones.
16 O Yahweh, [f]surely I am (AA)Your slave,
I am Your slave, the (AB)son of Your maidservant,
You have (AC)loosed my bonds.
17 To You I shall offer (AD)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (AE)call upon the name of Yahweh.
18 I shall (AF)pay my vows to Yahweh,
Oh may it be in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (AG)courts of the house of Yahweh,
In the midst of you, O (AH)Jerusalem.
[g]Praise Yah!
Yahweh’s Lovingkindness Prevails
David Puts Goliath to Death
31 Then the words which David spoke were heard. And they told them [a]to Saul, and he sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, “(A)Let no man’s heart fail on account of him; (B)your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 33 Then Saul said to David, “(C)You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth while he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant was shepherding his father’s sheep. And a lion and a bear would come and take a lamb from the flock, 35 and I would go out after it and strike it and (D)rescue the lamb from its mouth. Then it rose up against me, and I would seize it by its beard and strike it down and put it to death. 36 Your servant has struck down both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has [b]reproached the battle lines of the living God.” 37 And David said, “(E)Yahweh, who delivered me from the hand of the lion and from the hand of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “(F)Go, and may Yahweh be with you.” 38 Then Saul clothed David with his robes and put a bronze helmet on his head, and he clothed him with armor. 39 And David girded his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. So David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” And David took them [c]off. 40 Then he took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his pouch, and (G)his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
41 Then the Philistine came on and drew near to David, with the shield-bearer in front of him. 42 And the Philistine looked and saw David. And (H)he despised him; for he was but a youth and (I)ruddy, with a handsome appearance. 43 And the Philistine said to David, “(J)Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And (K)the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh (L)to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field.” 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, (M)but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of hosts, the God of the battle lines of Israel, whom you have [d]reproached. 46 This day Yahweh will deliver you up into my hands, and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the (N)dead bodies of the camp of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth, (O)that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that (P)Yahweh does not save by sword or by spear; (Q)for the battle is Yahweh’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
48 Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that (R)David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David sent his hand down into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground.
Peter’s Report in Jerusalem
11 Now the apostles and (A)the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, [a](B)those who were circumcised took issue with him, 3 saying, “(C)You [b]went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” 4 But Peter began speaking [c]and proceeded to explain to them (D)in orderly sequence, saying, 5 “(E)I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw (F)a vision, [d]an object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from heaven, and it came right down to me, 6 and when looking closely at it, I was observing it and saw the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds of the [e]sky. 7 And I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise up, Peter; [f]slaughter and eat.’ 8 But I said, ‘By no means, Lord, for nothing defiled or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9 But a voice from heaven answered a second time, ‘(G)What God has cleansed, no longer consider defiled.’ 10 And this happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into heaven. 11 And behold, immediately three men appeared at the house in which we were, having been sent to me from (H)Caesarea. 12 (I)And the Spirit told me to go with them [g](J)without taking issue at all. (K)These six brothers also went with me and we entered the man’s house. 13 And he reported to us how he had seen the angel [h]standing in his house, and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is also called Peter; 14 and he will speak (L)words to you by which you will be saved, you and (M)all your household.’ 15 And as I began to speak, (N)the Holy Spirit fell upon them just (O)as He did upon us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘(P)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [i]with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 Therefore if (Q)God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, (R)who was I that I could prevent God’s way?” 18 And when they heard this, they [j]quieted down and (S)glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the (T)repentance that leads to life.”
Jesus Preaches in Galilee
14 (A)Now after John had been delivered up into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, [a](B)preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “(C)The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God [b]is at hand; (D)repent and [c]believe in the gospel.”
16 (E)As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19 And going on a little farther, He saw [d]James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away [e]to follow Him.
21 (F)And they *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath (G)He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 (H)And they were astonished at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “(I)What [f]do we have to do with You, Jesus the (J)Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—(K)the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27 And they were all (L)amazed, so that they were arguing among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 And immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
