Book of Common Prayer
God’s Blessing on the King
For the music director. A psalm of David.[a]
20 May Yahweh answer you in the day of trouble.
May the name of Jacob’s God protect[b] you.
2 May he send you help[c] from the sanctuary,
and from Zion may he sustain you.
3 May he remember all your offerings,
and your burnt offering may he regard favorably.[d]
4 May he give to you your heart’s desire,[e]
and your every plan may he fulfill. Selah
5 May we shout for joy over your victory,
and in the name of our God may we set up banners.
May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.
6 Now I know that Yahweh will help his anointed.[f]
He will answer him from his holy heaven
with the victorious power of his right hand.
7 Some boast in chariots and others in horses,[g]
but we boast in the name of Yahweh, our God.
8 They will collapse and fall,
and we will rise and stand firm.
9 Rescue,[h] O Yahweh.
Let the king answer us when we call.
Joy in the Salvation of Yahweh
For the music director. A psalm of David.[i]
21 O Yahweh, the king will rejoice in your strength,
and how greatly he will delight in your help.[j]
2 You have given him the desire of his heart,
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For you meet him with blessings of good things.
You set on his head a crown of fine gold.
4 He asked life from you; you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.
5 His honor is great because of your help.[k]
Splendor and majesty you have bestowed upon him.
6 For you set on him blessings forever.
You make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 Because the king trusts Yahweh,
and through the steadfast love[l] of the Most High
he shall not be moved.
8 Your hand will find all your enemies;
your right hand will find those who hate you.
9 You will make them like your fiery furnace
at the time of your appearance.
Yahweh will swallow them in his wrath
and fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their offspring[m] from the earth,
and their descendants[n] from among the children of humankind.
11 Though they have plotted[o] evil against you,
though they have planned a scheme, they will not prevail.
12 For you will turn them to flight;[p]
you will aim arrows on your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Yahweh, in your strength,
and we sing and praise your power.
Yahweh Gives Authority to His Messiah
Of David. A psalm.[a]
110 A declaration of Yahweh to my lord,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 Yahweh will send out your mighty scepter from Zion;
rule in the midst of your enemies.
3 Your people will volunteer[b] in the day of your power.[c]
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
you will have the dew of your youth.[d]
4 Yahweh has sworn and he will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
according to the manner of Melchizedek.”
5 O Lord, at your right hand
he will shatter kings in the day of his anger.
6 He will judge among the nations;
he will fill them with corpses.
He will shatter the rulers[e] of many countries.
7 He will drink from the stream by the road;
therefore he will lift up his head.
Thanksgiving for God’s Deliverance
116 I love him, because Yahweh has heard
the voice of my supplications.[a]
2 Because he has inclined his ear to me,
I will call all my days.[b]
3 The ropes of death encircled me,
and the distresses of Sheol found me.
I found trouble and grief.
4 Then I called on the name of Yahweh:
“O Yahweh, please save my life!”
5 Gracious is Yahweh and righteous,
and our God is merciful.
6 Yahweh watches over the simple.
I was brought low, but he gave me victory.
7 Return, O my soul, to your repose,
for Yahweh has dealt bountifully with you.
8 For you have rescued me[c] from death,
my eyes[d] from tears, my feet from stumbling.
9 I will walk before Yahweh
in the land[e] of the living.
10 I believed when I spoke,
“I am afflicted greatly.”
11 I said in my haste,
“Everyone[f] is a liar.”
12 What shall I give back to Yahweh
for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and proclaim the name of Yahweh.
14 I will pay my vows made to Yahweh
in the presence of all his people.
15 Costly in Yahweh’s view[g] is
the death of his faithful ones.
16 Ah, Yahweh, I am indeed your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your maidservant.
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and proclaim the name of Yahweh.
18 I will pay my vows made to Yahweh
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house[h] of Yahweh,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
Praise Yah![i]
Let All Peoples Praise Yahweh
117 Praise Yahweh, all you nations;
extol him, all you peoples.
2 For his loyal love is mighty on our behalf,
and the faithfulness of Yahweh is forever.
Praise Yah![j]
22 “These words Yahweh spoke to your whole assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire and the very thick cloud with a loud voice, and he did not add anything,[a] and then he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And then[b] when you heard[c] the voice from the midst of the darkness, and as the mountain was burning with fire, and and all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me, 24 you said, ‘Look, Yahweh our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from the midst of the fire; this day we have seen[d] that God can speak with a human being, yet he remains alive.[e] 25 And so then why shall we die, for this great fire will consume us if we continue[f] to hear the voice of Yahweh our God any longer, and so we shall die? 26 For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire as we have heard it and remained alive?[g] 27 You go near and hear everything[h] that Yahweh our God will say; and then you tell us all that Yahweh our God tells you, and we will listen, and we will do it.’
28 “And Yahweh heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me,[i] and Yahweh said to me, ‘I have heard the sound of the words of this people that they have spoken to you; they are right with respect to all that they have spoken. 29 If only[j] they had such a mind’;[k] that is, to fear me and to keep all my commandments at all times,[l] so that it will go well[m] for them and for their children forever.[n] 30 Go! Say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 But you stand here with me, and let me tell you all of the commandments and the rules and the regulations that you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land that I am giving to them to take possession of it.’
32 “So you must be careful to do just as Yahweh your God commanded you; you shall not turn to the right or to the left. 33 In exactly the path[o] that Yahweh your God has commanded, you must go, so that you may live and it will go well[p] for you and you may live long[q] in the land that you will take possession of.”
Final Warnings to the Church at Corinth
13 This is the third time I am coming to you. By the testimony[a] of two or three witnesses every word[b] will be established. 2 I have already said when I was present the second time, and although I[c] am absent now I also say in advance to those who sinned previously and to all the rest, that if I come again I will not spare anyone, 3 since you are demanding proof that Christ, who is not weak toward you, but is powerful among you, is speaking in me. 4 For indeed, he was crucified because of weakness, but he lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we will live together with him because of the power of God toward you.
5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize regarding yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you are unqualified? 6 And I hope that you will recognize that we are not unqualified! 7 Now we pray to God that you not do wrong in any way, not that we are seen as approved, but that you do what is good, even though we are seen as though unqualified. 8 For we are not able to do anything against the truth, but rather only for the truth. 9 For we rejoice whenever we are weak, but you are strong, and we pray for this: your maturity. 10 Because of this, I am writing these things although I[d] am absent, in order that when I[e] am present I may not have to act severely according to the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.
Final Greetings and Benediction
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice, be restored, be encouraged, be in agreement[f], be at peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. 13 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many miracles in your name?’ 23 And then I will say to them plainly,[a] ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness!’
The Sermon on the Mount: Two Houses and Two Foundations
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain came down and the rivers came and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it did not collapse, because its foundation was laid on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain came down and the rivers came and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it collapsed, and its fall was great.”
The Sermon on the Mount: Response
28 And it happened when Jesus finished these words the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.
