Psalm 66-67

A Song of Praise and Thanksgiving[a]

66 Praise God with shouts of joy, all people!
Sing to the glory of his name;
    offer him glorious praise!
Say to God, “How wonderful are the things you do!
    Your power is so great
    that your enemies bow down in fear before you.
Everyone on earth worships you;
    they sing praises to you,
    they sing praises to your name.”

Come and see what God has done,
    his wonderful acts among people.
(A)He changed the sea into dry land;
    our ancestors crossed the river on foot.
There we rejoiced because of what he did.
He rules forever by his might
    and keeps his eyes on the nations.
    Let no rebels rise against him.
Praise our God, all nations;
    let your praise be heard.
He has kept us alive
    and has not allowed us to fall.

10 You have put us to the test, God;
    as silver is purified by fire,
    so you have tested us.
11 You let us fall into a trap
    and placed heavy burdens on our backs.
12 You let our enemies trample us;
    we went through fire and flood,
    but now you have brought us to a place of safety.[b]

13 I will bring burnt offerings to your house;
    I will offer you what I promised.
14 I will give you what I said I would
    when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer sheep to be burned on the altar;
I will sacrifice bulls and goats,
    and the smoke will go up to the sky.

16 Come and listen, all who honor God,
    and I will tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried to him for help;
    I praised him with songs.
18 If I had ignored my sins,
    the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God has indeed heard me;
    he has listened to my prayer.

20 I praise God,
    because he did not reject my prayer
    or keep back his constant love from me.

A Song of Thanksgiving[c]

67 God, be merciful to us and bless us;
    look on us with kindness,
so that the whole world may know your will;
    so that all nations may know your salvation.

May the peoples praise you, O God;
    may all the peoples praise you!

May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
    because you judge the peoples with justice
    and guide every nation on earth.

May the peoples praise you, O God;
    may all the peoples praise you!

The land has produced its harvest;
    God, our God, has blessed us.
God has blessed us;
    may all people everywhere honor him.

Psalm 145

A Hymn of Praise[a]

145 I will proclaim your greatness, my God and king;
    I will thank you forever and ever.
Every day I will thank you;
    I will praise you forever and ever.
The Lord is great and is to be highly praised;
    his greatness is beyond understanding.

What you have done will be praised from one generation to the next;
    they will proclaim your mighty acts.
They will speak of your glory and majesty,
    and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds.
People will speak of your mighty deeds,
    and I will proclaim your greatness.
They will tell about all your goodness
    and sing about your kindness.
The Lord is loving and merciful,
    slow to become angry and full of constant love.
He is good to everyone
    and has compassion on all he made.

10 All your creatures, Lord, will praise you,
    and all your people will give you thanks.
11 They will speak of the glory of your royal power
    and tell of your might,
12 so that everyone will know your mighty deeds
    and the glorious majesty of your kingdom.
13 Your rule is eternal,
    and you are king forever.

The Lord is faithful to his promises;
    he is merciful in all his acts.
14 He helps those who are in trouble;
    he lifts those who have fallen.

15 All living things look hopefully to you,
    and you give them food when they need it.
16 You give them enough
    and satisfy the needs of all.

17 The Lord is righteous in all he does,
    merciful in all his acts.
18 He is near to those who call to him,
    who call to him with sincerity.
19 He supplies the needs of those who honor him;
    he hears their cries and saves them.
20 He protects everyone who loves him,
    but he will destroy the wicked.

21 I will always praise the Lord;
    let all his creatures praise his holy name forever.

Sirach 3:3-9

If you respect your father, you can make up for your sins, and if you honor your mother, you are earning great wealth. If you respect your father, one day your own children will make you happy; the Lord will hear your prayers. If you obey the Lord by honoring your father and making your mother happy, you will live a long life. Obey your parents as if you were their slave. (A)Honor your father in everything you do and say, so that you may receive his blessing. When parents give their blessing, they give strength to their children's homes, but when they curse their children, they destroy the very foundations.

Sirach 3:14-17

14 The Lord will not forget the kindness you show to your father; it will help you make up for your sins. 15 When you are in trouble, the Lord will remember your kindness and will help you; your sins will melt away like frost in warm sunshine. 16 Those who abandon their parents or give them cause for anger may as well be cursing the Lord; they are already under the Lord's curse.

Humility

17 My child, be humble in everything you do, and people will appreciate it more than gifts.[a]

1 John 2:12-17

12 I write to you, my children, because your sins are forgiven for the sake of Christ. 13 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you have defeated the Evil One.

14 I write to you, my children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you are strong; the word of God lives in you, and you have defeated the Evil One.

15 Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you do not love the Father. 16 Everything that belongs to the world—what the sinful self desires, what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of—none of this comes from the Father; it all comes from the world. 17 The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever.

John 6:41-47

41 The people started grumbling about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 So they said, “This man is Jesus son of Joseph, isn't he? We know his father and mother. How, then, does he now say he came down from heaven?”

43 Jesus answered, “Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 People cannot come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me; and I will raise them to life on the last day. 45 (A)The prophets wrote, ‘Everyone will be taught by God.’ Anyone who hears the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 This does not mean that anyone has seen the Father; he who is from God is the only one who has seen the Father. 47 I am telling you the truth: he who believes has eternal life.
