Book of Common Prayer
Praise the Name of the Lord
148 (A)Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord (B)from the heavens;
praise him (C)in the heights!
2 Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his (D)hosts!
3 Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars!
4 Praise him, you (E)highest heavens,
and you (F)waters above the heavens!
5 (G)Let them praise the name of the Lord!
For (H)he commanded and they were created.
6 And he (I)established them forever and ever;
he gave (J)a decree, and it shall not (K)pass away.[a]
7 Praise the Lord (L)from the earth,
you (M)great sea creatures and all deeps,
8 (N)fire and hail, (O)snow and mist,
(P)stormy wind (Q)fulfilling his word!
9 (R)Mountains and all hills,
(S)fruit trees and all (T)cedars!
10 (U)Beasts and all livestock,
creeping things and (V)flying birds!
11 Kings of the earth and (W)all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
12 Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!
13 (X)Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for (Y)his name alone is exalted;
(Z)his majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has (AA)raised up a horn for his people,
(AB)praise for all his saints,
for the people of Israel who are (AC)near to him.
(AD)Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a New Song
149 (AE)Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord (AF)a new song,
his praise in (AG)the assembly of the godly!
2 Let Israel (AH)be glad in (AI)his Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their (AJ)King!
3 Let them praise his name with (AK)dancing,
making melody to him with (AL)tambourine and (AM)lyre!
4 For the Lord (AN)takes pleasure in his people;
he (AO)adorns the humble with salvation.
5 Let the godly exult in glory;
let them (AP)sing for joy on their (AQ)beds.
6 Let (AR)the high praises of God be in their throats
and (AS)two-edged swords in their hands,
7 to execute vengeance on the nations
and punishments on the peoples,
8 to bind their kings with (AT)chains
and their nobles with fetters of iron,
9 to execute on them the judgment (AU)written!
(AV)This is honor for all his godly ones.
(AW)Praise the Lord!
Let Everything Praise the Lord
150 (AX)Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his (AY)sanctuary;
praise him in (AZ)his mighty heavens![b]
2 Praise him for his (BA)mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent (BB)greatness!
3 Praise him with (BC)trumpet sound;
praise him with (BD)lute and (BE)harp!
4 Praise him with (BF)tambourine and (BG)dance;
praise him with (BH)strings and (BI)pipe!
5 Praise him with sounding (BJ)cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
6 Let (BK)everything that has breath praise the Lord!
(BL)Praise the Lord!
Tremble at the Presence of the Lord
114 When (A)Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from (B)a people of strange language,
2 Judah became his (C)sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.
3 (D)The sea looked and fled;
(E)Jordan turned back.
4 (F)The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
5 What (G)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?
7 (H)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 who turns (I)the rock into (J)a pool of water,
(K)the flint into a spring of water.
To Your Name Give Glory
115 (L)Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
(M)for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
2 Why should the nations say,
(N)“Where is their God?”
3 (O)Our God is in the heavens;
(P)he does all that he pleases.
4 (Q)Their idols are silver and gold,
(R)the work of human hands.
5 They have mouths, (S)but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
6 They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
7 They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
and they do not make a sound in their throat.
8 (T)Those who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.
9 O (U)Israel,[a] (V)trust in the Lord!
He is their (W)help and their shield.
10 O (X)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and (Y)their shield.
11 You (Z)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
he will bless (AA)the house of Israel;
he will bless (AB)the house of Aaron;
13 he will (AC)bless those who fear the Lord,
(AD)both the small and the great.
The Way of Wisdom
9 (A)Wisdom has built her house;
she has hewn her (B)seven (C)pillars.
2 She has (D)slaughtered her beasts; she has (E)mixed her wine;
she has also (F)set her table.
3 She has (G)sent out her young women to (H)call
from (I)the highest places in the town,
4 (J)“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
(K)To him who lacks sense she says,
5 “Come, (L)eat of my bread
and (M)drink of (N)the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave (O)your simple ways,[a] and (P)live,
(Q)and walk in the way of insight.”
7 Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
8 (R)Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
(S)reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
9 Give instruction[b] to a wise man, and he will be (T)still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will (U)increase in learning.
10 (V)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and (W)the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
11 For by me (X)your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life.
12 (Y)If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;
if you scoff, you alone will bear it.
14 Now when (A)the apostles at Jerusalem heard that (B)Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them (C)that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for (D)he had not yet (E)fallen on any of them, but (F)they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then (G)they laid their hands on them and (H)they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, (I)“May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God (J)with money! 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for (K)your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, (L)if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in (M)the gall[a] of bitterness and in (N)the bond of iniquity.” 24 And Simon answered, (O)“Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”
25 Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, (P)preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 (A)And behold, a (B)lawyer stood up to (C)put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to (D)inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, (E)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and (F)your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; (G)do this, and you will live.”
Martha and Mary
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus[a] entered a village. And a woman named (A)Martha (B)welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called (C)Mary, who (D)sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are (E)anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.[b] Mary has chosen (F)the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
