Prayer to Be Kept Safe

20 May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe. May He send you help from the house of God, and give you strength from Zion. May He remember all your gifts of grain given on the altar in worship. And may He be pleased with your burnt gifts.

May He give you the desire of your heart, and make all your plans go well. We will sing for joy when you win. In the name of our God we will lift up our flags. May the Lord give you all the things you ask Him for.

Now I know that the Lord saves His chosen one. He will answer him from His holy heaven, with the saving power of His right hand. Some trust in wagons and some in horses. But we will trust in the name of the Lord, our God. They have fallen on their knees. But we rise up and stand straight. O Lord, save! May the King answer us when we call.

Song of Praise for Being Kept Safe

21 O Lord, in Your strength the king is glad! How great is his joy in Your saving power! You have given him the desire of his heart. You have not kept from him anything that he has asked for. For You meet him with gifts of good things. You set a crown of pure gold on his head. He asked You for life and You gave it to him, a long life forever and ever. His honor is great because of Your help. You have given him greatness and power. You have given him honor and respect forever. And You make him glad with the joy of being with You.

For the king trusts in the Lord. Because of the loving-kindness of the Most High, he will not be shaken. Your hand will find all who fight against You. Your right hand will find those who hate You. You will make them like a stove of fire in the time of Your anger. The Lord will eat them up in His anger. And the fire will destroy them. 10 You will destroy their children from the earth, and their sons from the children of men. 11 For they planned much trouble against You. They have made sinful plans that will come to nothing. 12 For You will make them turn their backs when You take up Your bow against them. 13 Be honored in Your strength, O Lord. We will sing and praise Your power.

Psalm 110

The King Rules

110 The Lord says to my Lord, “Sit at My right side, for those who hate You will be a place to rest Your feet.” The Lord will send out Your strength from Zion, saying, “Rule in front of those who hate You.” Your people will be willing to help in the day of Your power. Your young men will be dressed in holy clothes. They will come to You like water on the grass in the early morning.

The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind: “You are a Religious Leader forever, in the same way as Melchizedek.” The Lord is at Your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of His anger. He will say who is guilty or not among the nations. He will fill them with dead bodies. He will crush the leaders of many lands. He will drink from the river on the way. And so He will lift up His head.

Psalm 116-117

Praises to God for Being Saved from Death

116 I love the Lord, because He hears my voice and my prayers. I will call on Him as long as I live, because He has turned His ear to me. The strings of death are all around me. And the fear of the grave came upon me. I suffered with trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I beg You, save my life!”

The Lord is loving and right. Yes, our God is full of loving-kindness. The Lord takes care of the child-like. I was brought down, and He saved me. Return to your rest, O my soul. For the Lord has been good to you. For You, O Lord, have saved my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk with the Lord in the land of the living. 10 I believed when I said, “I am very troubled.” 11 I said in my fear, “All men are liars.”

12 What should I give to the Lord for all the good things He has done for me? 13 I will show Him my thanks for saving me with a gift of wine and praise His name. 14 I will keep my promises to the Lord before all His people. 15 The death of His holy ones is of great worth in the eyes of the Lord. 16 For sure I am Your servant, O Lord. I am Your servant, the son of the woman who served You. You have set me free from my chains. 17 I will give a gift of thanks to You and call on the name of the Lord. 18 I will keep my promises to the Lord before all His people, 19 in the holy place of the Lord, and in the center of you, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

A Psalm of Praise

117 Praise the Lord, all nations! Praise Him, all people! For His loving-kindness toward us is great. And the truth of the Lord lasts forever. Praise the Lord!

Amos 5:18-27

18 It is bad for you who want the day of the Lord to come. For what will the day of the Lord be to you? It will be darkness and not light. 19 It will be as when a man runs away from a lion and is met by a bear. It will be as when a man goes home and rests with his hand against the wall, and gets bitten by a snake. 20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness instead of light, very dark with nothing bright in it?

21 “I hate your special suppers. I will have nothing to do with them. And I am not pleased with your religious meetings. 22 Even if you give Me burnt gifts and grain gifts in worship, I will not receive them. I will not even look at the peace gifts of your fat animals. 23 Take the noise of your songs away from Me. I will not listen to the sound of your harps. 24 But let what is fair roll down like waters. Let what is right and good flow forever like a river.

25 “O people of Israel, was it to Me you gave gifts of animals and grain on the altar for forty years in the desert? 26 You also carried with you Sikkuth your king and Kiyyun your star god, the false gods you made for yourselves. 27 So I will make you go as prisoners to the other side of Damascus,” says the Lord, Whose name is the God of All.

Jude 17-25

17 Dear friends, you must remember the words spoken by the missionaries of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said, “In the last days there will be men who will laugh at the truth and will be led by their own sinful desires.” 19 They are men who will make trouble by dividing people into groups against each other. Their minds are on the things of the world because they do not have the Holy Spirit.

20 Dear friends, you must become strong in your most holy faith. Let the Holy Spirit lead you as you pray. 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God. Wait for life that lasts forever through the loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 Have loving-kindness for those who doubt. 23 Save some by pulling them out of the fire. Have loving-kindness for others but also fear them. Be afraid of being led into doing their sins. Hate even the clothes that have touched sinful bodies.

24 There is One Who can keep you from falling and can bring you before Himself free from all sin. He can give you great joy as you stand before Him in His shining-greatness. 25 He is the only God. He is the One Who saves from the punishment of sin through Jesus Christ our Lord. May He have shining-greatness and honor and power and the right to do all things. He had this before the world began, He has it now, and He will have this forever. Let it be so.

Matthew 22:15-22

The Proud Religious Law-Keepers Try to Trap Jesus (A)

15 Then the proud religious law-keepers got together to think how they could trap Jesus in His talk. 16 They sent their followers to Jesus with some of King Herod’s men. They asked, “Teacher, we know that You are true. We know that You are teaching the truth about God. We know You are not afraid of what men think or say about You. 17 Tell us what You think of this. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 Jesus knew their sinful thoughts and said, “You pretend to be someone you are not! Why do you try to trap Me? 19 Show Me a piece of money.” They brought Him a piece. 20 Jesus said to them, “Whose picture is this? Whose name is on it?” 21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Pay to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar. Pay to God the things that belong to God.” 22 When they heard this, they were surprised and wondered about it. Then they went away from Him.
