  342. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
  343. God’s Mercy Remembered

  347. Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, ‘It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.’
  348. How well you direct your course to seek lovers! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.
  349. Unfaithful Israel

If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man’s wife, will he return to her? Would not such a land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? says the Lord.
  350. Look up to the bare heights, and see! Where have you not been lain with? By the waysides you have sat waiting for lovers, like a nomad in the wilderness. You have polluted the land with your whoring and wickedness.
  351. And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in crimson, that you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life.

  359. The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds, and your lovers shall go into captivity; then you will be ashamed and dismayed because of all your wickedness.
  360. All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you; for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy, the punishment of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, because your sins are so numerous.
  361. the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
  362. You show steadfast love to the thousandth generation, but repay the guilt of parents into the laps of their children after them, O great and mighty God whose name is the Lord of hosts,
  363. the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing, as they bring thank-offerings to the house of the Lord: ‘Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever!’ For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the Lord.

  367. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;
  368. Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
  369. I passed by you again and looked on you; you were at the age for love. I spread the edge of my cloak over you, and covered your nakedness: I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord God, and you became mine.
  370. Gifts are given to all whores; but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from all around for your whorings.
  371. Thus says the Lord God, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whoring with your lovers, and because of all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them,
  372. therefore, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated; I will gather them against you from all around, and will uncover your nakedness to them, so that they may see all your nakedness.

  375. And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their lust; and after she defiled herself with them, she turned from them in disgust.
  376. Therefore, O Oholibah, thus says the Lord God: I will arouse against you your lovers from whom you turned in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every side:
  377. To them you are like a singer of love songs, one who has a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; they hear what you say, but they will not do it.

  380. She shall pursue her lovers, but not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them. Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better with me then than now.’
  381. Now I will uncover her shame in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.
  382. I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, ‘These are my pay, which my lovers have given me.’ I will make them a forest, and the wild animals shall devour them.
  383. I will punish her for the festival days of the Baals, when she offered incense to them and decked herself with her ring and jewellery, and went after her lovers, and forgot me, says the Lord.

  429. Love for Enemies

‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
  430. ‘If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
  431. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

  452. for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.
  453. Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
  454. One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining next to him;

  478. He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.

  484. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
  485. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
  486. nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  501. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
  502. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant
  503. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.
  504. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
  505. Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues

Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy.
  506. Let all that you do be done in love.
  507. Let anyone be accursed who has no love for the Lord. Our Lord, come!
  508. My love be with all of you in Christ Jesus.
  509. For I wrote to you out of much distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain, but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
  510. So I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.
  511. For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died.
  512. by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love,
  513. Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.
  514. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others.
  515. Therefore, openly before the churches, show them the proof of your love and of our reason for boasting about you.
  516. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
  517. And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!
  518. I will most gladly spend and be spent for you. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?
  519. Final Greetings and Benediction

Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
  520. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
  521. and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
  522. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; the only thing that counts is faith working through love.
  523. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
  524. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
  525. The Fruit of the Spirit

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,
  526. just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.
  527. Paul’s Prayer

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason
  528. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us
  529. and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.
  530. and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
  531. with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
  532. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
  533. from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.
  534. and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
  535. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
  536. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
  537. Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.
  538. Peace be to the whole community, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  539. Grace be with all who have an undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
  540. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight
  541. These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defence of the gospel;
  542. Imitating Christ’s Humility

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy,
  543. make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
  544. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.
  545. for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,
  546. and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
  547. I want their hearts to be encouraged and united in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ himself,
  548. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
  549. Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.
  550. remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
  551. Timothy’s Encouraging Report

But Timothy has just now come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love. He has told us also that you always remember us kindly and long to see us—just as we long to see you.
  552. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you.
  553. Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another;
  554. and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, beloved, to do so more and more,
  555. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
  556. esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
  557. Thanksgiving

We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.
  558. and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
  559. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope,
  560. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.
  561. But the aim of such instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith.
  562. and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
  563. Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.
  564. not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money.
  565. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
  566. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
  567. The Good Fight of Faith

But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.
  568. for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
  569. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
  570. Shun youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
  571. For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
  572. treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
  573. Paul’s Charge to Timothy

Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,
  574. for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
  575. but he must be hospitable, a lover of goodness, prudent, upright, devout, and self-controlled.
  576. Tell the older men to be temperate, serious, prudent, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance.
  577. so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
  578. All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with all of you.
  579. Philemon’s Love and Faith

When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God
  580. because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith towards the Lord Jesus.
  581. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.
  582. yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love—and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus.
  583. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.’
  584. For God is not unjust; he will not overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do.
  585. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds,
  586. for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts.’
  587. Service Well-Pleasing to God

    Let mutual love continue.
  588. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’
  589. Trial and Temptation

Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
  590. Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?
  591. You do well if you really fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
  592. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,
  593. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart.
  594. Honour everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honour the emperor.
  595. Suffering for Doing Right

Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind.
  596. Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins.
  597. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
  598. and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love.
  599. They have left the straight road and have gone astray, following the road of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of doing wrong,
  600. but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him:
  601. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling.
  602. Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world;
  603. See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
  604. The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters.
  605. Love One Another

For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
  606. We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death.
  607. We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another.
  608. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?
  609. Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.
  610. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
  611. God Is Love

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
  612. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.
  613. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.
  614. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
  615. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.
  616. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.
  617. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.
  618. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgement, because as he is, so are we in this world.
  619. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.
  620. We love because he first loved us.
  621. Those who say, ‘I love God’, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.
  622. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.
  623. Faith Conquers the World

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child.
  624. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.
  625. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,
  626. Salutation

The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth,
  627. Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, in truth and love.
  628. Truth and Love

I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father.
  629. But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another.
  630. And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.
  631. Salutation

The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
  632. they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on in a manner worthy of God;
  633. May mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance.
  634. These are blemishes on your love-feasts, while they feast with you without fear, feeding themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted;
  635. keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
  636. and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood,
  637. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
  638. ‘I know your works—your love, faith, service, and patient endurance. I know that your last works are greater than the first.
  639. I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but are lying—I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.
  640. I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
  641. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practises falsehood.
  642. So now, my son, love your kindred, and in your heart do not disdain your kindred, the sons and daughters of your people, by refusing to take a wife for yourself from among them. For in pride there is ruin and great confusion. And in idleness there is loss and dire poverty, because idleness is the mother of famine.
  643. the demon will smell it and flee, and will never be seen near her any more. Now when you are about to go to bed with her, both of you must first stand up and pray, imploring the Lord of heaven that mercy and safety may be granted to you. Do not be afraid, for she was set apart for you before the world was made. You will save her, and she will go with you. I presume that you will have children by her, and they will be as brothers to you. Now say no more!’ When Tobias heard the words of Raphael and learned that she was his kinswoman, related through his father’s lineage, he loved her very much, and his heart was drawn to her.

All the Israelites who are saved in those days and are truly mindful of God will be gathered together; they will go to Jerusalem and live in safety for ever in the land of Abraham, and it will be given over to them. Mordecai’s Prayer

Then Mordecai prayed to the Lord, calling to remembrance all the works of the Lord. He said, ‘O Lord, Lord, you rule as King over all things, for the universe is in your power and there is no one who can oppose you when it is your will to save Israel, for you have made heaven and earth and every wonderful thing under heaven. You are Lord of all, and there is no one who can resist you, the Lord. You know all things; you know, O Lord, that it was not in insolence or pride or for any love of glory that I did this, and refused to bow down to this proud Haman; for I would have been willing to kiss the soles of his feet to save Israel! But I did this so that I might not set human glory above the glory of God, and I will not bow down to anyone but you, who are my Lord; and I will not do these things in pride. And now, O Lord God and King, God of Abraham, spare your people; for the eyes of our foes are upon us to annihilate us, and they desire to destroy the inheritance that has been yours from the beginning. Do not neglect your portion, which you redeemed for yourself out of the land of Egypt. Hear my prayer, and have mercy upon your inheritance; turn our mourning into feasting, that we may live and sing praise to your name, O Lord; do not destroy the lips of those who praise you.’ And all Israel cried out mightily, for their death was before their eyes.

    Esther’s Prayer

Then Queen Esther, seized with deadly anxiety, fled to the Lord. She took off her splendid apparel and put on the garments of distress and mourning, and instead of costly perfumes she covered her head with ashes and dung, and she utterly humbled her body; every part that she loved to adorn she covered with her tangled hair. She prayed to the Lord God of Israel, and said: ‘O my Lord, you only are our king; help me, who am alone and have no helper but you, for my danger is in my hand. Ever since I was born I have heard in the tribe of my family that you, O Lord, took Israel out of all the nations, and our ancestors from among all their forebears, for an everlasting inheritance, and that you did for them all that you promised. And now we have sinned before you, and you have handed us over to our enemies because we glorified their gods. You are righteous, O Lord! And now they are not satisfied that we are in bitter slavery, but they have covenanted with their idols to abolish what your mouth has ordained, and to destroy your inheritance, to stop the mouths of those who praise you and to quench your altar and the glory of your house, to open the mouths of the nations for the praise of vain idols, and to magnify for ever a mortal king. ‘O Lord, do not surrender your sceptre to what has no being; and do not let them laugh at our downfall; but turn their plan against them, and make an example of him who began this against us. Remember, O Lord; make yourself known in this time of our affliction, and give me courage, O King of the gods and Master of all dominion! Put eloquent speech in my mouth before the lion, and turn his heart to hate the man who is fighting against us, so that there may be an end of him and those who agree with him. But save us by your hand, and help me, who am alone and have no helper but you, O Lord. You have knowledge of all things, and you know that I hate the splendour of the wicked and abhor the bed of the uncircumcised and of any alien. You know my necessity—that I abhor the sign of my proud position, which is upon my head on days when I appear in public. I abhor it like a filthy rag, and I do not wear it on the days when I am at leisure. And your servant has not eaten at Haman’s table, and I have not honoured the king’s feast or drunk the wine of libations. Your servant has had no joy since the day that I was brought here until now, except in you, O Lord God of Abraham. O God, whose might is over all, hear the voice of the despairing, and save us from the hands of evildoers. And save me from my fear!’

Esther Is Received by the King

On the third day, when she ended her prayer, she took off the garments in which she had worshipped, and arrayed herself in splendid attire. Then, majestically adorned, after invoking the aid of the all-seeing God and Saviour, she took two maids with her; on one she leaned gently for support, while the other followed, carrying her train. She was radiant with perfect beauty, and she looked happy, as if beloved, but her heart was frozen with fear. When she had gone through all the doors, she stood before the king. He was seated on his royal throne, clothed in the full array of his majesty, all covered with gold and precious stones. He was most terrifying. Lifting his face, flushed with splendour, he looked at her in fierce anger. The queen faltered, and turned pale and faint, and collapsed on the head of the maid who went in front of her. Then God changed the spirit of the king to gentleness, and in alarm he sprang from his throne and took her in his arms until she came to herself. He comforted her with soothing words, and said to her, ‘What is it, Esther? I am your husband. Take courage; You shall not die, for our law applies only to our subjects. Come near.’ Then he raised the golden sceptre and touched her neck with it; he embraced her, and said, ‘Speak to me.’ She said to him, ‘I saw you, my lord, like an angel of God, and my heart was shaken with fear at your glory. For you are wonderful, my lord, and your countenance is full of grace.’ And while she was speaking, she fainted and fell. Then the king was agitated, and all his servants tried to comfort her.

  654. Description of Wisdom

  655. The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction, and concern for instruction is love of her,
  656. and love of her is the keeping of her laws, and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality,

  665. so that your children, whom you loved, O Lord, might learn that it is not the production of crops that feeds humankind but that your word sustains those who trust in you.
  666. The Prologue

Many great teachings have been given to us through the Law and the Prophets and the others that followed them, and for these we should praise Israel for instruction and wisdom. Now, those who read the scriptures must not only themselves understand them, but must also as lovers of learning be able through the spoken and written word to help the outsiders. So my grandfather Jesus, who had devoted himself especially to the reading of the Law and the Prophets and the other books of our ancestors, and had acquired considerable proficiency in them, was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom, so that by becoming familiar also with his book those who love learning might make even greater progress in living according to the law. You are invited therefore to read it with goodwill and attention, and to be indulgent in cases where, despite our diligent labour in translating, we may seem to have rendered some phrases imperfectly. For what was originally expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same sense when translated into another language. Not only this book, but even the Law itself, the Prophecies, and the rest of the books differ not a little when read in the original. When I came to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes and stayed for some time, I found opportunity for no little instruction. It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some diligence and labour to the translation of this book. During that time I have applied my skill day and night to complete and publish the book for those living abroad who wished to gain learning and are disposed to live according to the law.
