And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.”

For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’

But you say, ‘If any one tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is given to God, he need not honor his father.’
-
‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
-
Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues,
-

And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;

For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die’;

You know the commandments: ‘Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”

and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,

Humility and Hospitality
Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose the places of honor, saying to them,
-
“When you are invited by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him;
-
But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you.
-
You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’”

“Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and love salutations in the market places and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,
-
For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Jesus answered, “I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.

None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor.

But a Pharisee in the council named Gama′li-el, a teacher of the law, held in honor by all the people, stood up and ordered the men to be put outside for a while.
