The Rich Man and Lazarus
“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
-
In Hades, where he was being tormented, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.
-
He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’
-
But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus in like manner evil things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.

The Death of Lazarus
Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill.

Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,
-
after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.”

Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.

Jesus the Resurrection and the Life
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

Jesus Raises Lazarus to Life
Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.

When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

Mary Anoints Jesus
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him.

The Plot to Kill Lazarus
When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well,
-
So the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.
