  1. “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
  2. Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
  3. ‘The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations.’

  6. Because he loved your ancestors, he chose to bless their descendants, and he personally brought you out of Egypt with a great display of power.
  7. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
  8. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
  9. Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
  10. Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.
  11. “If you listen to these regulations and faithfully obey them, the Lord your God will keep his covenant of unfailing love with you, as he promised with an oath to your ancestors.
  12. He will love you and bless you, and he will give you many children. He will give fertility to your land and your animals. When you arrive in the land he swore to give your ancestors, you will have large harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and great herds of cattle, sheep, and goats.
  13. A Call to Love and Obedience

    “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul.
  14. Yet the Lord chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you, their descendants, above all other nations, as is evident today.
  15. He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.
  16. So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.
  17. “You must love the Lord your God and always obey his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands.
  18. “If you carefully obey the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the Lord your God and serve him with all your heart and soul,
  19. “Be careful to obey all these commands I am giving you. Show love to the Lord your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him.
  20. do not listen to them. The Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul.
  21. “But suppose your servant says, ‘I will not leave you,’ because he loves you and your family, and he has done well with you.
  22. you must designate three additional cities of refuge. (He will give you this land if you are careful to obey all the commands I have given you—if you always love the Lord your God and walk in his ways.)
  23. Rights of the Firstborn

    “Suppose a man has two wives, but he loves one and not the other, and both have given him sons. And suppose the firstborn son is the son of the wife he does not love.
  24. When the man divides his inheritance, he may not give the larger inheritance to his younger son, the son of the wife he loves, as if he were the firstborn son.
  25. He must recognize the rights of his oldest son, the son of the wife he does not love, by giving him a double portion. He is the first son of his father’s virility, and the rights of the firstborn belong to him.
