  1. The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

    When Herod was king of Judea, there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah. He was a member of the priestly order of Abijah, and his wife, Elizabeth, was also from the priestly line of Aaron.
  2. John the Baptist Prepares the Way

    It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene.
  3. John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done.
  4. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
  5. Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples.
  6. Herod’s Confusion

    When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.
  7. “I beheaded John,” Herod said, “so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?” And he kept trying to see him.
  8. Jesus Grieves over Jerusalem

    At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”
  9. When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time.
  10. Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
  11. Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
  12. (Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day.)
  13. Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.
