  1. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
  2. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
  3. And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.
  4. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.
  5. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
  6. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
  7. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
  8. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  9. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
  10. And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.
  11. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.
  12. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
  13. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
  14. And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
  15. Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
  16. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
  17. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
  18. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”
  19. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
  20. The Temptation and Fall of Man

    Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
  21. And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;
  22. but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
  23. Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
  24. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
  25. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
