  1. Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.

  11. The Need for Self-Discipline

    Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
  12. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.
  13. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.
  14. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
  15. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.
  16. God Disciplines His Children

    In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
  17. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
  18. because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
  19. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
  20. If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
  21. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!
  22. They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
  23. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
  24. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.
