  1. After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

    Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
  6. “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
  7. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
  8. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
  9. The Transfiguration

    After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.
  10. Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
  11. Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”
  12. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
  13. As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately,
  14. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

    “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
  15. Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
  16. But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
  17. He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
  18. Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
  19. Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
  20. Peter Disowns Jesus

    While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
  21. When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
  22. Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
  23. Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
  24. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
  25. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
