    This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
  2. Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
  3. Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
  4. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
  5. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
  6. ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
  7. Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?

  10. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

  12. Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”
  13. “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.
  14. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.
  15. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
  16. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
  17. “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
  18. Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
  19. “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
  20. Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
  21. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’
  22. They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
  23. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
  24. Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
  25. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
