“I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthy to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Baptism of Jesus

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River.

But John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”

After Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him.

In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.

The Death of John the Baptist

Now King Herod heard this, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead, and because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.”

So she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” Her mother said, “The head of John the baptizer.”

But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I experience?”

They said to him, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I experience,

The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned.

So John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming—I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Baptism of Jesus

Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. And while he was praying, the heavens opened,

(Now all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.

However, the Pharisees and the experts in religious law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,

And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining—this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming to him and being baptized.

For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Peter said to them, “Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added.

But when they believed Philip as he was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they began to be baptized, both men and women.
