The Excellence of Love

If I speak with the tongues of mankind and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give away all my possessions to charity, and if I surrender my body so that I may glory, but do not have love, it does me no good. ...

  26. Yet the Lord set His affection on your fathers, to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, you over all the other peoples, as it is this day.
  27. He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the stranger by giving him food and clothing.
  28. So show your love for the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
  29. Rewards of Obedience

    “You shall therefore love the Lord your God, and always keep His directive, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments.

  36. then it shall be on the day that he wills what he owns as an inheritance to his sons, he is not allowed to treat the son of the loved wife as the firstborn, at the expense of the son of the unloved, who actually is the firstborn son.
  37. Nevertheless, the Lord your God was unwilling to listen to Balaam, but the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because the Lord your God loves you.

  198. The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority; And My people love it this way! But what will you do when the end comes?

  203. All your lovers have forgotten you, They do not seek you; For I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, With the punishment of a cruel one, Because your wrongdoing is great, And your sins are numerous.
  204. The Lord appeared to him long ago, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you out with kindness.
  205. She weeps bitterly in the night, And her tears are on her cheeks; She has no one to comfort her Among all her lovers. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; They have become her enemies.
  206. I called to my lovers, but they deserted me; My priests and my elders perished in the city While they sought food to restore their strength themselves.
  207. “Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, you were at the time for love; so I spread My garment over you and covered your nakedness. I also swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you so that you became Mine,” declares the Lord God.
  208. Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you give your gifts to all your lovers and lavish favors on them so that they will come to you from every direction for your obscene practices.
  209. This is what the Lord God says: “Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your obscene practices with your lovers and with all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your sons that you gave to idols,
  210. therefore, behold, I am going to gather all your lovers whom you pleased, all those whom you loved as well as all those whom you hated. So I will gather them against you from every direction and expose your nakedness to them so that they may see all your nakedness.
  211. I will also hand you over to your lovers, and they will tear down your shrines, demolish your high places, strip you of your clothing, take away your jewels, and will leave you naked and bare.
  212. And they will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments against you in the sight of many women. Then I will put an end to your prostitution, and you will also no longer pay your lovers.
  213. “Oholah prostituted herself while she was Mine; and she lusted after her lovers, after the Assyrians, her neighbors,
  214. Therefore, I handed her over to her lovers, to the Assyrians, after whom she lusted.
  215. And the Babylonians came to her to the bed of love and defiled her with their obscene practice. And when she had been defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust.
  216. She lusted after their lovers, whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys and whose discharge is like the discharge of horses.

  222. So now I will uncover her lewdness Before the eyes of her lovers, And no one will rescue her from My hand.
  223. And I will destroy her vines and fig trees, Of which she said, ‘They are my wages for prostitution Which my lovers have given me.’ And I will turn them into a forest, And the animals of the field will devour them.
  224. I will punish her for the days of the Baals When she used to offer sacrifices to them And adorn herself with her nose ring and jewelry, And follow her lovers, so that she forgot Me,” declares the Lord.
  225. Hosea’s Redemption of Gomer

    Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet is committing adultery, as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.”
  226. Their liquor is gone, They prostitute themselves continually; Their rulers dearly love shame.
  227. For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey all alone; Ephraim has paid fees for lovers.
  228. Ephraim Punished

  237. Hate evil, love good, And establish justice in the gate! Perhaps the Lord God of armies Will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
  238. You who hate good and love evil, Who tear off their skin from them And their flesh from their bones,
  239. He has told you, mortal one, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
  240. The Lord your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will rejoice over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.
  241. Also let none of you devise evil in your heart against another, and do not love perjury; for all these things are what I hate,’ declares the Lord.”
  242. “The Lord of armies says this: ‘The fast of the fourth, the fast of the fifth, the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth months will become joy, jubilation, and cheerful festivals for the house of Judah; so love truth and peace.’
  243. For how great will their loveliness and beauty be! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine, the virgins.
  244. God’s Love for Jacob

    The pronouncement of the word of the Lord to Israel through Malachi:
  245. “I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say, “How have You loved us?” “Was Esau not Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob;
  246. Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord which He loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.
  247. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
  248. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
  249. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors, do they not do the same?
  250. “And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they will be seen by people. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
