  1. But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.
  2. They put forward false witnesses who said, “This man does not stop speaking against this holy place and the Law;
  3. you who received the Law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”
  4. After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue officials sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.”
  5. and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.
  6. But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to keep the Law of Moses.”
  7. and they are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to practice, since we are Romans.”
  8. saying, “This man is inciting the people to worship God contrary to the law.”
  9. but if there are questions about teaching and persons and your own law, see to it yourselves; I am unwilling to be a judge of these matters.”
  10. But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful assembly.
  11. And when they heard about them, they began glorifying God; and they said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the Law;
  12. take them along and purify yourself together with them, and pay their expenses so that they may shave their heads; and then everyone will know that there is nothing to what they have been told about you, but that you yourself also conform, keeping the Law.
  13. crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who instructs everyone everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place!”
  14. “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the Law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today.
  15. “Now a certain Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,
  16. But when they stretched him out with straps, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?”
  17. Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to try me according to the Law, and in violation of the Law, order me to be struck?”
  18. and I found that he was being accused regarding questions in their Law, but was not charged with anything deserving death or imprisonment.
  19. But I confess this to you, that in accordance with the Way, which they call a sect, I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and is written in the Prophets;
  20. while Paul said in his own defense, “I have not done anything wrong either against the Law of the Jews, or against the temple, or against Caesar.”
  21. When they had set a day for Paul, people came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening.
