  1. who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.
  2. But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, stared at him,
  3. Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
  4. Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:
  5. As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people repeatedly begged to have these things spoken to them the next Sabbath.
  6. Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking to them and urging them to continue in the grace of God.
  7. Paul Turns to the Gentiles

    The next Sabbath nearly all the city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.
  8. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.
  9. Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you repudiate it and consider yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
  10. But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their region.
  11. This man was listening to Paul as he spoke. Paul looked at him intently and saw that he had faith to be made well,
  12. When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voice, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have become like men and have come down to us!”
  13. And they began calling Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, since he was the chief speaker.
  14. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard about it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out
  15. But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, thinking that he was dead.
  16. And after Paul and Barnabas had a heated argument and debate with them, the brothers determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue.
  17. All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles.
  18. Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers,
  19. it seemed good to us, having become of one mind, to select men to send to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
  20. But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
  21. Second Missionary Journey

    After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s return and visit the brothers and sisters in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.”
  22. But Paul was of the opinion that they should not take along with them this man who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.
  23. But Paul chose Silas, and left after being entrusted by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.
  24. The Macedonian Vision

    Now Paul also came to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek,
  25. Paul wanted this man to leave with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
