  1. 1 David in the person of the people praiseth God for the victory, attributing it to God, and not to the strength of man. Wherein the holy Ghost directeth the faithful to Christ, who is the perfection of this kingdom.

    To him that excelleth. A Psalm of David.

    The King shall rejoice in thy strength, O Lord: yea how greatly shall he rejoice in thy salvation?
  2. 1 The holy Ghost calleth all men to the consideration of man’s life, 7 showing them not to be most blessed that are most wealthy, and therefore not to be feared: but contrariwise he lifteth up our minds to consider how all things are ruled by God’s providence: 14 Who as he judgeth these worldly misers to everlasting torments, 15 so doth he preserve his, and will reward them in the day of the resurrection, 1 Thess. 1:6.

  3. 1 He showeth how God of his mercy chose his Church of the posterity of Abraham, 8 Reproaching the stubborn rebellion of their fathers, that the children might not only understand. 11 That God of his free mercy made his Covenant with their ancestors, 17 But also seeing them so malicious and perverse, might be ashamed, and so turn wholly to God.  In this Psalm the holy Ghost hath comprehended, as it were, the sum of all God’s benefits, to the intent the ignorant and gross people might see in few words the effect of the whole histories of the Bible.

    Hear my doctrine, O my people: incline your ears unto the words of my mouth.
  4. 1 The holy Ghost promiseth, that the condition of the Church which was in misery after the captivity of Babylon, should be restored to great excellency. 4 So that there should be nothing more comfortable, than to be numbered among the members thereof.

  5. ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was thus, When as his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the holy Ghost.
  6. But while he thought these things, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, the son of David, fear not to take Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her, is of the holy Ghost.
  7. Indeed I baptize you with water to amendment of life, but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear, he will baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire.
  8. Wherefore I say unto you, Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
  9. And whosoever shall speak a word against the son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever shall speak against the holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come.
  10. Go therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the holy Ghost,
  11. Truth it is, I have baptized you with water: but he will baptize you with the holy Ghost.
