  1. Joshua Commissioned to Lead Israel

    And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting.
  2. And the Lord commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to give them. I will be with you.”
  3. Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and Joshua the son of Nun.
  4. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.

    After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant,
  6. Joshua Assumes Command

    And Joshua commanded the officers of the people,
  7. And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said,
  8. And they answered Joshua, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.
  9. Rahab Hides the Spies

    And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.
  10. Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them.
  11. And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.”
  12. Israel Crosses the Jordan

    Then Joshua rose early in the morning and they set out from Shittim. And they came to the Jordan, he and all the people of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.
  13. Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”
  14. And Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.
  15. The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
  16. And Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God.”
  17. And Joshua said, “Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
  18. Twelve Memorial Stones from the Jordan

    When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua,
  19. Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe.
  20. And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel,
  21. And the people of Israel did just as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, just as the Lord told Joshua. And they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged and laid them down there.
  22. And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the covenant had stood; and they are there to this day.
  23. For the priests bearing the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to tell the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. The people passed over in haste.
  24. On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him just as they had stood in awe of Moses, all the days of his life.
  25. And the Lord said to Joshua,
