  1. So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
  2. So Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, without coming into the king's presence.
  3. For your servant vowed a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to the Lord.’”

  8. So Hushai, David's friend, came into the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem.
  9. And the king said, “And where is your master's son?” Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he remains in Jerusalem, for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will give me back the kingdom of my father.’”
  10. Absalom Enters Jerusalem

    Now Absalom and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.
  11. When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
  12. Then the king arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king.

    David Returns to Jerusalem

    Now Israel had fled every man to his own home.
  13. and said to the king, “Let not my lord hold me guilty or remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. Do not let the king take it to heart.
  14. And when he came to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?”
  15. And the king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will provide for you with me in Jerusalem.”
  16. But Barzillai said to the king, “How many years have I still to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
  17. So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
  18. And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.
  19. And there went out after him Joab's men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
  20. Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
  21. So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
  22. And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
  23. And the time that David reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.
  24. Then the king sent and summoned Shimei and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go out from there to any place whatever.
  25. And Shimei said to the king, “What you say is good; as my lord the king has said, so will your servant do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem many days.
