  177. I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.
  178. in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes.
  179. When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.
  180. Do not drag me off with the wicked, with the workers of evil, who speak peace with their neighbors while evil is in their hearts.
  181. Give to them according to their work and according to the evil of their deeds; give to them according to the work of their hands; render them their due reward.
  182. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
  183. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
  184. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
  185. Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me!
  186. They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft.
  187. He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil.
  188. There the evildoers lie fallen; they are thrust down, unable to rise.
  189. He Will Not Forsake His Saints

    Of David.

Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!
  190. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
  191. Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
  192. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
  193. they are not put to shame in evil times; in the days of famine they have abundance.
  194. Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever.
  195. Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.
  196. For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.
  197. “You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
  198. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
  199. The Steadfast Love of God Endures

To the choirmaster. A Maskil of David, when Doeg, the Edomite, came and told Saul, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”

Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
  200. You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
  201. Have those who work evil no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God?
  202. He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them.
  203. Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.
  204. All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil.
  205. deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men.
  206. You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel. Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah
  207. Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers,
  208. They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, “Who can see them?”
  209. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.
  210. no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
  211. that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever;
  212. For behold, your enemies, O Lord, for behold, your enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be scattered.
  213. My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.
  214. They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast.
  215. Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers?
  216. O you who love the Lord, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
  217. A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil.
  218. Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord.
  219. They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight;
  220. a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.
  221. When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
  222. So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
  223. May this be the reward of my accusers from the Lord, of those who speak evil against my life!
  224. I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word.
  225. Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commandments of my God.
  226. They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law.
  227. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
  228. But those who turn aside to their crooked ways the Lord will lead away with evildoers! Peace be upon Israel!
  229. Deliver Me, O Lord, from Evil Men

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men,
  230. who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually.
  231. Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah
  232. Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!
  233. Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity, and let me not eat of their delicacies!
  234. Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
  235. Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me and from the snares of evildoers!
  236. for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
  237. delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech,
  238. who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil,
  239. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
  240. Do not plan evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly beside you.
  241. Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil.
  242. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
  243. with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord;
  244. a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil,
  245. to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
  246. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
  247. The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless, but destruction to evildoers.
  248. Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.
  249. Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.
  250. Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it.
  251. A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of evil devices he condemns.
  252. Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evildoers, but the root of the righteous bears fruit.
  253. An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous escapes from trouble.
  254. Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.
  255. A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.
  256. One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless.
  257. A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated.
  258. The evil bow down before the good, the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
  259. Do they not go astray who devise evil? Those who devise good meet steadfast love and faithfulness.
  260. The wicked is overthrown through his evildoing, but the righteous finds refuge in his death.
  261. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.
  262. All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.
  263. The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
  264. By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.
  265. It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.
  266. The highway of the upright turns aside from evil; whoever guards his way preserves his life.
  267. A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.
  268. Whoever winks his eyes plans dishonest things; he who purses his lips brings evil to pass.
  269. An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
  270. An evil man seeks only rebellion, and a cruel messenger will be sent against him.
  271. If anyone returns evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.
  272. A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes.
  273. Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.
  274. Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts.
  275. The soul of the wicked desires evil; his neighbor finds no mercy in his eyes.
  276. When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.
  277. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; how much more when he brings it with evil intent.
  278. Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them,
  279. Whoever plans to do evil will be called a schemer.
  280. Fret not yourself because of evildoers, and be not envious of the wicked,
  281. for the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
  282. Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel are fervent lips with an evil heart.
  283. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it completely.
  284. Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit, but the blameless will have a goodly inheritance.
  285. An evil man is ensnared in his transgression, but a righteous man sings and rejoices.
  286. If you have been foolish, exalting yourself, or if you have been devising evil, put your hand on your mouth.
  287. because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.
  288. Evil Under the Sun

Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.
  289. But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.
  290. Fear God

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.
  291. There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt,
  292. This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?
  293. There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy on mankind:
  294. a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.
  295. In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing.
  296. Be not hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand in an evil cause, for he does whatever he pleases.
  297. Whoever keeps a command will know no evil thing, and the wise heart will know the proper time and the just way.
  298. Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.
  299. Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him.
  300. It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.
  301. This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
  302. For man does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.
  303. There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were an error proceeding from the ruler:
  304. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is evil madness.
  305. Remember Your Creator in Your Youth

    Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;
  306. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
  307. Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.
  308. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil,
  309. For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.
  310. Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
  311. Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying,
  312. He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.
  313. For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted.
  314. Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men, and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is godless and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.
  315. I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
  316. You will not be joined with them in burial, because you have destroyed your land, you have slain your people. “May the offspring of evildoers nevermore be named!
  317. For the ruthless shall come to nothing and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,
  318. And yet he is wise and brings disaster; he does not call back his words, but will arise against the house of the evildoers and against the helpers of those who work iniquity.
  319. As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right.
  320. He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,
  321. But evil shall come upon you, which you will not know how to charm away; disaster shall fall upon you, for which you will not be able to atone; and ruin shall come upon you suddenly, of which you know nothing.
  322. Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
  323. Evil and Oppression

    Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
  324. Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways.
  325. Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. The Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.
  326. I will destine you to the sword, and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter, because, when I called, you did not answer; when I spoke, you did not listen, but you did what was evil in my eyes and chose what I did not delight in.”
  327. I also will choose harsh treatment for them and bring their fears upon them, because when I called, no one answered, when I spoke, they did not listen; but they did what was evil in my eyes and chose that in which I did not delight.”
  328. And I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil in forsaking me. They have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.
  329. for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
  330. Your evil will chastise you, and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God; the fear of me is not in you, declares the Lord God of hosts.
  331. will he be angry forever, will he be indignant to the end?’ Behold, you have spoken, but you have done all the evil that you could.”
  332. At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart.
  333. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord; remove the foreskin of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds.”
  334. O Jerusalem, wash your heart from evil, that you may be saved. How long shall your wicked thoughts lodge within you?
  335. “For my people are foolish; they know me not; they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are ‘wise’—in doing evil! But how to do good they know not.”
  336. they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy.
  337. As a well keeps its water fresh, so she keeps fresh her evil; violence and destruction are heard within her; sickness and wounds are ever before me.
  338. Evil in the Land

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:
  339. Go now to my place that was in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell at first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.
  340. But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.
  341. The Valley of Slaughter

“For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set their detestable things in the house that is called by my name, to defile it.
  342. Death shall be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family in all the places where I have driven them, declares the Lord of hosts.
  343. I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
  344. They bend their tongue like a bow; falsehood and not truth has grown strong in the land; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know me, declares the Lord.
  345. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”
  346. Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.”
  347. The Lord of hosts, who planted you, has decreed disaster against you, because of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done, provoking me to anger by making offerings to Baal.”
  348. How long will the land mourn and the grass of every field wither? For the evil of those who dwell in it the beasts and the birds are swept away, because they said, “He will not see our latter end.”
  349. Thus says the Lord concerning all my evil neighbors who touch the heritage that I have given my people Israel to inherit: “Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will pluck up the house of Judah from among them.
  350. This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing.
  351. Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil.
  352. And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.
  353. “And when you tell this people all these words, and they say to you, ‘Why has the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? What is our iniquity? What is the sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’
  354. and because you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, every one of you follows his stubborn, evil will, refusing to listen to me.
  355. and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it.
  356. and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.
  357. Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the Lord, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.’
  358. “But they say, ‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’
  359. Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.
  360. Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
  361. O house of David! Thus says the Lord: “‘Execute justice in the morning, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of your evil deeds.’”
  362. The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds, and your lovers shall go into captivity; then you will be ashamed and confounded because of all your evil.
  363. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord.
  364. For the land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land mourns, and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up. Their course is evil, and their might is not right.
  365. “Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares the Lord.
  366. But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his evil; all of them have become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
  367. But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.
  368. saying, ‘Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil deeds, and dwell upon the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever.
  369. It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds.
  370. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
  371. For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth. The children of Israel have done nothing but provoke me to anger by the work of their hands, declares the Lord.
  372. because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah that they did to provoke me to anger—their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
  373. They are coming in to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them with the dead bodies of men whom I shall strike down in my anger and my wrath, for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil.
  374. I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them persistently, saying, ‘Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to you and your fathers.’ But you did not incline your ear or listen to me.
  375. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
  376. It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.”
  377. “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.”
  378. But when Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,
  379. because of the evil that they committed, provoking me to anger, in that they went to make offerings and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers.
  380. But they did not listen or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods.
  381. And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant?
  382. Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, the evil of the kings of Judah, the evil of their wives, your own evil, and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
  383. The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and the abominations that you committed. Therefore your land has become a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.
  384. “I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea before your very eyes for all the evil that they have done in Zion, declares the Lord.
  385. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.
  386. Jehoiachin Released from Prison

And in the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-fifth day of the month, Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, graciously freed Jehoiachin king of Judah and brought him out of prison.
  387. “Let all their evildoing come before you, and deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions; for my groans are many, and my heart is faint.”
  388. then those of you who escape will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive, how I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes that go whoring after their idols. And they will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils that they have committed, for all their abominations.
  389. And they shall know that I am the Lord. I have not said in vain that I would do this evil to them.”
