  1. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

  9. A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God

    Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.
  10. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.
  11. Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,
  12. Jesus the Great High Priest

    Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
  13. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
  14. Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
  15. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.
  16. This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
  17. The Certainty of God’s Promise

    When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,
  18. Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;
  19. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.
  20. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
  21. But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.
  22. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
  23. But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
  24. For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
  25. Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.
  26. so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
  27. Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.
  28. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.
  29. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
  30. with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.
  31. First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law.
  32. Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
  33. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
  34. and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.
  35. Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”
  36. And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
  37. A Call to Persevere in Faith

    Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
  38. and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
  39. let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
  40. If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,
  41. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
  42. since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
  43. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
  44. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
  45. God Disciplines His Children

    In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
  46. See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.
  47. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,
  48. The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp.
