  1. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written: “But the righteous one will live by faith.”
  2. But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking from a human viewpoint.)

    But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
  4. but it is the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction,
  5. whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in God’s merciful restraint He let the sins previously committed go unpunished;
  6. for the demonstration, that is, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
  7. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
  8. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
  9. just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
  10. Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.”
  11. and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
  12. For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
  13. Therefore it was also credited to him as righteousness.
  14. For if by the offense of the one, death reigned through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
  15. So then, as through one offense the result was condemnation to all mankind, so also through one act of righteousness the result was justification of life to all mankind.
  16. so that, as sin reigned in death, so also grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  17. and do not go on presenting the parts of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and your body’s parts as instruments of righteousness for God.
  18. Do you not know that the one to whom you present yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of that same one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
  19. and after being freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness.
  20. I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.
  21. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in relation to righteousness.
  22. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
  23. What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but the righteousness that is by faith;
  24. however, Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law.
  25. For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
