  14. The Death of Jesus

    From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.

  23. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
  24. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.

  33. But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”
  34. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.
  35. For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”
  36. The Death of Jesus

    It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
  37. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
  38. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
  39. “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
  40. Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
  41. At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.
  42. The Death of Lazarus

    Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
  43. When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”

    Herod’s Death

    Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.
  56. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
  57. I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison,
  58. I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment.
  59. If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!”
  60. I found he had done nothing deserving of death, but because he made his appeal to the Emperor I decided to send him to Rome.
  61. And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.
  62. After they left the room, they began saying to one another, “This man is not doing anything that deserves death or imprisonment.”
  63. They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.
  64. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
  65. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
  66. For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
  67. Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

    Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—
  68. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.
  69. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

  101. The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

    Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was,
  102. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
  103. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.
  104. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
  105. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
  106. Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.
  107. and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

  113. Believers Who Have Died

    Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.
  114. but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
  115. But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
  116. Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—
  117. and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

  119. Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
  120. Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;
  121. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
  122. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it,

  130. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
  131. If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.
  132. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
  133. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
  134. Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.
  135. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.
  136. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.
  137. I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
  138. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.
  139. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
  140. Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
  141. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
  142. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.
  143. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
  144. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
  145. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
