  1. Unfaithful Jerusalem

    See how Jerusalem, once so faithful, has become a prostitute. Once the home of justice and righteousness, she is now filled with murderers.
  2. Zion will be restored by justice; those who repent will be revived by righteousness.
  3. The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. The people of Judah are his pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead he found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead he heard cries of violence.
  4. But the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will be exalted by his justice. The holiness of God will be displayed by his righteousness.
  5. He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.

  7. Open the gates to all who are righteous; allow the faithful to enter.
  8. But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them.
  9. I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness. Since your refuge is made of lies, a hailstorm will knock it down. Since it is made of deception, a flood will sweep it away.
  10. Israel’s Ultimate Deliverance

    Look, a righteous king is coming! And honest princes will rule under him.
  11. Justice will rule in the wilderness and righteousness in the fertile field.
  12. And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.
  13. Though the Lord is very great and lives in heaven, he will make Jerusalem his home of justice and righteousness.
  14. “I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations.
  15. Because he is righteous, the Lord has exalted his glorious law.
  16. “Open up, O heavens, and pour out your righteousness. Let the earth open wide so salvation and righteousness can sprout up together. I, the Lord, created them.
  17. I will raise up Cyrus to fulfill my righteous purpose, and I will guide his actions. He will restore my city and free my captive people— without seeking a reward! I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”
  18. Consult together, argue your case. Get together and decide what to say. Who made these things known so long ago? What idol ever told you they would happen? Was it not I, the Lord? For there is no other God but me, a righteous God and Savior. There is none but me.
  19. The people will declare, “The Lord is the source of all my righteousness and strength.” And all who were angry with him will come to him and be ashamed.
  20. Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.
  21. Look up to the skies above, and gaze down on the earth below. For the skies will disappear like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a piece of clothing. The people of the earth will die like flies, but my salvation lasts forever. My righteous rule will never end!
  22. For the moth will devour them as it devours clothing. The worm will eat at them as it eats wool. But my righteousness will last forever. My salvation will continue from generation to generation.”
  23. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.
  24. Blessings for All Nations

    This is what the Lord says: “Be just and fair to all. Do what is right and good, for I am coming soon to rescue you and to display my righteousness among you.
  25. Yet they act so pious! They come to the Temple every day and seem delighted to learn all about me. They act like a righteous nation that would never abandon the laws of its God. They ask me to take action on their behalf, pretending they want to be near me.
