24 Which also he called [us,] not only of the Jews, but also of heathen men,

25 as he saith in Osee, I shall call not my people my people, and not my loved my loved, and not getting mercy getting mercy [and not having mercy having mercy];

26 and it shall be in the place, where it is said to them, Not ye my people, there they shall be called the sons of living God.

27 But Esaias crieth for Israel [Forsooth Esaias crieth for Israel], If the number of children of Israel shall be as [the] gravel of the sea, the remnants [the reliefs] shall be made safe.

28 Forsooth a word making an end, and abridging in equity, for the Lord shall make a word abridged on all the earth[a].

29 And as Esaias before-said, But God of hosts had left to us seed, we had been made as Sodom, and we had been like as Gomorrha.

  1. Romans 9:28 for the Lord shall make a word abridged, or made short, upon earth

24 that is to say, us, whom he called not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles.

25 As he says in Hosea: I will call them my people who were not my people, and her beloved who was not beloved. 26 And: It will come to pass in the place where it was said to them, You are not my people, that there the children of the living God shall be called. 27 But Isaiah cries concerning Israel: Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saved. 28 He carries out the word to the end, and makes it short in righteousness. For a short word will God make on earth. 29 And as Isaiah said before: If the Lord of Sabaoth had not left us a seed, we would have been made as Sodom, and would have been likened to Gomorrah.

24 [a]Even us whom he hath called, not of the [b]Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.

25 [c]As he saith also in Hosea, (A)I will call them, My people, which were not my people: and her, Beloved, which was not beloved.

26 And it shall be in the place where it was said unto them, (B)Ye are not my people, that there they shall be called, The children of the living God.

27 [d]Also Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, (C)Though the number of the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saved.

28 For he will make his account, and gather it into a [e]short sum with righteousness: for the Lord will make a short count in the earth.

29 (D)And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of [f]hosts had left us a [g]seed, we had been made as Sodom, and had been like to Gomorrah.

  1. Romans 9:24 Having established the doctrine of the eternal predestination of God on both parts: that is, as well of the reprobate, as of the elect, he cometh now to show the use of it, teaching us that we ought not to seek the testimony of it in the secret counsel of God, but by the vocation which is made manifest and set forth in the Church, propounding unto us the example of the Jews and Gentiles, that the doctrine may be better perceived.
  2. Romans 9:24 He saith not that all and every one of the Jews are called, but some of the Jews, and some of the Gentiles.
  3. Romans 9:25 Our vocation or calling is free and of grace, even as our predestination is: and therefore there is no cause why either our own unworthiness, or the unworthiness of our ancestors should cause us to think that we are not the elect and chosen of God, if we be called of him, and so embrace through faith the salvation that is offered us.
  4. Romans 9:27 Contrariwise, Neither any outward general calling, neither any worthiness of our ancestors is a sufficient witness of election, unless by faith and belief we answer God’s calling: which thing came to pass in the Jews, as the Lord had forewarned.
  5. Romans 9:28 God purposeth to bring the unkind and unthankful people to an extreme fewness.
  6. Romans 9:29 Armies, by which word the chiefest power that is, is given to God.
  7. Romans 9:29 Even a very few.

24 even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. 26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. 27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 for he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
