For Moses wrote, For the man that shall do rightwiseness that is of the law, shall live in it.

But the rightwiseness that is of belief, saith thus, Say thou not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? that is to say, to lead down Christ;

or who shall go down into hell? that is, to again-call Christ from death.[a]

But what saith the scripture? The word is nigh in thy mouth, and in thine heart; this is the word of belief, which we preach.

That if thou acknowledge in thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and believest in thine heart, that God raised him from death [that God raised him from dead], thou shalt be safe.

10 For by heart me believeth to rightwiseness [Forsooth by heart men believeth to rightwiseness], but by mouth acknowledging is made to health.

11 For why the scripture saith, Each that believeth in him, shall not be confounded.

12 And there is no distinction of Jew and of Greek; for the same Lord of all is rich into all, that inwardly call him [that in-call him].

13 For each man, whoever shall inwardly call [whoever shall in-call] the name of the Lord, shall be safe.

  1. Romans 10:7 or who shall do down into deepness, or hell? that is, to again-call Christ from dead.

Moses describes the righteousness which comes of the law, how the person who does the things of the law will live therein. But the righteousness that comes by faith speaks this way: Say not in your heart, who shall ascend into heaven? (which is nothing else than to fetch Christ down), or, who shall descend into the deep? (which is nothing else than to fetch Christ up from death). But what does the scripture say? The word is near you, even in your mouth and in your heart. This word is the word of faith that we preach. For if you acknowledge with your mouth that Jesus is the Lord, and believe with your heart that God raised him up from death, you will be safe. 10 For the belief of the heart justifies, and to acknowledge with the mouth makes a man safe. 11 For the scripture says: Whoever believes on him, will not be ashamed.

12 There is no difference between the Jews and the Gentiles. For there is one Lord over all, who richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For: Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

[a]For Moses thus describeth the righteousness which is of the Law, (A)That the man which doeth these things, shall live thereby.

But the righteousness which is of faith, speaketh on this wise, (B)[b]Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is to bring Christ from above.)

Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is to bring Christ again from the dead.)

[c]But what saith it? (C)The [d]word is near thee, even in thy mouth, and in thine heart. This is the word of faith which we preach.

[e]For if thou shalt [f]confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart, that [g]God raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved:

10 For with the heart man [h]believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth man confesseth to salvation.

11 [i]For the Scripture saith, (D)Whosoever [j]believeth in him, shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Grecian: for he that is Lord over all, is rich unto all that call on him.

13 (E)[k]For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord, shall be saved.

  1. Romans 10:5 That the Law regardeth and tendeth to Christ, that is a manifest proof, for that is propoundeth such a condition, as can be and is fulfilled of none but Christ only: which being imputed unto us by faith, our conscience is quieted, so that now no man can ask, Who can ascend up into heaven, or bring us from hell, seeing the Gospel teacheth that both of these is done by Christ, and that for their sakes, which with true faith embrace him which calleth them.
  2. Romans 10:6 Think not with thyself, as men that are staggering use to do.
  3. Romans 10:8 Vocation cometh by the word preached.
  4. Romans 10:8 By the word, Moses understood the Law which the Lord published with his own voice: and Paul applied it to the preaching of the Gospel which was the perfection of the Law.
  5. Romans 10:9 That is indeed true faith which is settled not only in the head, but also in the heart of man, whereof also we give testimony, by our outward life, and which tendeth to Christ as to our alone and only Savior, even as he setteth forth himself in his word.
  6. Romans 10:9 If thou profess plainly, sincerely, and openly, that thou takest Jesus only to be thy Lord and Savior.
  7. Romans 10:9 The Father, who is said to have raised the Son from the dead: and this is not spoken to shut out the divinity of the Son, but to set forth the Father’s counsel touching our redemption in the resurrection of the Son.
  8. Romans 10:10 Faith is said to justify, and furthermore seeing the confession of the mouth is an effect of faith, and confession is the way to come to salvation, it followeth that faith is also said to save.
  9. Romans 10:11 Now he proveth the other part which he propounded afore in the fourth verse, to wit, that Christ calleth whomsoever he listeth without any difference, and this he confirmeth by a double testimony.
  10. Romans 10:11 To believe in God is to yield and consent to God’s promise of our salvation by Christ, and that not only in general, but when we know that the promises pertain to us whereupon riseth a sure trust.
  11. Romans 10:13 True calling upon the Name of God is the testimony of true faith, and true faith of true vocation or calling, and true calling, of true election.

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it?
