And he said to me, These words be most faithful and true. And the Lord God of spirits of prophets sent his angel [And the Lord God of spirits prophets sent his angel], to show to his servants, what things it behooveth to be done soon.

And lo! I come swiftly. Blessed is he, that keepeth the words of prophecy of this book.

And I am John, that heard and saw these things. And after that I had heard and seen, I felled down [I fell down], to worship before the feet of the angel, that showed to me these things.

And he said to me, See thou, that thou do not; for I am a servant with thee [And he said to me, See that thou do not; for I am thine even-servant], and of thy brethren, prophets, and of them that keep the words of prophecy of this book; worship thou God.

10 And he said to me, Sign, or seal, thou not the words of prophecy of this book; for the time is nigh.

11 He that harmeth, harm he yet; and he that is in filths, wax he foul yet; and a just man, be justified yet [and he that is just, be he yet justified]; and the holy, be [he] hallowed yet.

And he said to me, These sayings are faithful and true. And the Lord God of the saints and prophets sent his angel to show to his servants the things that must shortly be fulfilled.

Behold, I come shortly. Happy is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.

I am John, who saw these things and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel that showed me these things. And he said to me, See you do it not. For I am your fellow servant, and the fellow servant of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the sayings of this book. But worship God.

10 And he said to me, Do not seal up the sayings of the prophecy of this book. For the time is at hand.

11 He who does evil, let him do evil still; and he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he who is righteous, let him be more righteous; and he who is holy, let him be more holy.

Footnotes

  1. Revelation 22:6 The whole book is concluded and made up by a confirmation, and a salutation. The confirmation hath three places: The words of the Angel unto verse 15, the words of Christ: verses 16, 17, and the obtestation made by S. John from divine authority, thence unto verse 20. By speech of the Angel this prophecy is confirmed unto verse 8 and then he speaketh of the use of this book in the verses following. The prophecy is first confirmed by the Angel from the nature thereof, that it is faithful and true. Secondly from the nature of the efficient cause, both principal which is God, and instrumental, which is the Angel in this verse. Thirdly from the promises of God concerning his coming to effect all these things, and concerning our salvation, verse 7. Fourthly, from the testification of S. John himself, verse 8. The rest of the speech of the angel tending to the same and S. John interrupted or brake off by his unadvised act of worshipping him, in the same verse which the Angel forbidding, teacheth him that adoration must be given not to him, but only to God, as for himself, that he is of such nature and office, as he may not be adored: which thing also was in like manner done, Rev. 16:10.
  2. Revelation 22:10 The Angel returneth unto his former speech: in which he teacheth the use of this book, both towards ourselves, in this and the next verse and in respect of God for declaration of his truth, thence unto verse 15.
  3. Revelation 22:10 That is, propound this prophecy openly unto all, and conceal no part of it. The contrary whereunto is commanded, Isa. 8:6 and Dan. 8:26.
  4. Revelation 22:11 An objection prevented. But there will be some that will abuse this occasion unto evil, and will wrest this Scripture unto their own destruction, as Peter saith. What then saith the Angel, the mysteries of God must not therefore be concealed, which it hath pleased him to communicate unto us. Let them be hurtful unto others, let such be more and more vile in themselves, whom this Scripture doth not please: yet others shall be further conformed thereby unto righteousness and true holiness. The care and reformation of these may not be neglected, because of the voluntary and malicious offense of others.
