Psalm 132

Psalm 132^(A)

A song of ascents.

¹Lord, remember David
and all his self-denial.^(B)

²He swore an oath to the Lord,
    he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:^(C)
³“I will not enter my house^(D)
    or go to my bed,
⁴I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
⁵till I find a place^(E) for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

⁶We heard it in Ephrathah,^(F)
    we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:^[a]^(G)
⁷“Let us go to his dwelling place,^(H)
    let us worship at his footstool,^(I) saying,
⁸‘Arise, Lord,^(J) and come to your resting place,
    you and the ark of your might.
⁹May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;^(K)
    may your faithful people^(L) sing for joy.’”

¹⁰For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.

¹¹The Lord swore an oath to David,^(M)
    a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants^(N)
    I will place on your throne.
¹²If your sons keep my covenant^(O)
    and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
    on your throne^(P) for ever and ever.”

¹³For the Lord has chosen Zion,^(Q)
    he has desired it for his dwelling,^(R) saying,
¹⁴“This is my resting place for ever and ever;^(S)
    here I will sit enthroned,^(T) for I have desired it.
¹⁵I will bless her with abundant provisions;
    her poor I will satisfy with food.^(U)
¹⁶I will clothe her priests^(V) with salvation,
    and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.^(W)

¹⁷“Here I will make a horn^[b] grow^(X) for David
and set up a lamp^(Y) for my anointed one.^(Z)
¹⁸I will clothe his enemies with shame,^(AA)
but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”^(AB)

Nehemiah 9:26-38

New International Version

²⁶“But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law.^(A) They killed^(B) your prophets,^(C) who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies.^(D) ²⁷So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies,^(E) who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion^(F) you gave them deliverers,^(G) who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

²⁸“But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight.^(H) Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion^(I) you delivered them^(J) time after time.

²⁹“You warned^(K) them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant^(L) and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’^(M) Stubbornly they turned their backs^(N) on you, became stiff-necked^(O) and refused to listen.^(P) ³⁰For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets.^(Q) Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.^(R) ³¹But in your great mercy you did not put an end^(S) to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful^(T) God.

³²“Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty^(U) and awesome,^(V) who keeps his covenant of love,^(W) do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship^(X) that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. ³³In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous;^(Y) you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.^(Z) ³⁴Our kings,^(AA) our leaders, our priests and our ancestors^(AB) did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the statutes you warned them to keep. ³⁵Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness^(AC) to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you^(AD) or turn from their evil ways.

³⁶“But see, we are slaves^(AE) today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces. ³⁷Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.^(AF)

The Agreement of the People

³⁸“In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement,^(AG) putting it in writing,^(AH) and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”^[a]

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

⁹“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her^(A) and shared her luxury^(B) see the smoke of her burning,^(C) they will weep and mourn over her.^(D) ¹⁰Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off^(E) and cry:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,^(F)
you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour^(G) your doom has come!’

¹¹“The merchants^(H) of the earth will weep and mourn^(I) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore^(J)— ¹²cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;^(K) ¹³cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.^(L)

¹⁴“They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ ¹⁵The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her^(M) will stand far off,^(N) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn^(O) ¹⁶and cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,^(P)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!^(Q)
¹⁷In one hour^(R) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’^(S)

“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,^(T) will stand far off.^(U) ¹⁸When they see the smoke of her burning,^(V) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city^(W)?’^(X) ¹⁹They will throw dust on their heads,^(Y) and with weeping and mourning^(Z) cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,^(AA)
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’^(AB)

²⁰“Rejoice over her, you heavens!^(AC)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
    with the judgment she imposed on you.”^(AD)

Matthew 15:29-39

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand^(A)^(B)^(C)

²⁹Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. ³⁰Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.^(D) ³¹The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.^(E)

³²Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;^(F) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

³³His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

³⁴“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”

³⁵He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. ³⁶Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them^(G) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. ³⁷They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.^(H) ³⁸The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. ³⁹After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
