⁴ In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. ⁵ The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome^[a] it.

¹⁹ This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

Dispute over Jesus’ testimony

¹² When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’

¹² The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light.

⁹ But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
