Paul the apostle, not of men, nor by man [neither by man], but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, that raised him from death [that raised him from dead men],

and all the brethren that be with me, to the churches of Galatia,

grace to you and peace of God the Father, and of the Lord Jesus Christ [and of our Lord Jesus Christ],

that gave himself for our sins, to deliver us from the present wicked world, by the will of God and our Father, [the which gave himself for our sins, that he should deliver us from this present wayward world, after the will of God and our Father,]

to whom is honour and glory into worlds of worlds. Amen.

I wonder, that so soon ye be thus moved from him that called you into the grace of Christ, into another evangel [into another gospel];

which is not another, but that there be some that trouble you, and will mis-turn the evangel of Christ.

But though we, or an angel of heaven, preached to you, besides that that we have preached to you, be he accursed. [But though we, or an angel of heaven, evangelize to you, besides that that we have evangelized to you, cursed be he.]

As I have said before, and now again I say, if any man preach to you besides that that ye have received, be he accursed [if any shall evangelize except that that ye have taken, cursed be he].

10 For now whether counsel I men, or God? or whether I seek to please men? If I pleased yet men, I were not Christ's servant.[a]

11 For, brethren, I make known to you the evangel, that was preached of me, for it is not by man; [Soothly brethren, I make the gospel known to you, which is evangelized, or preached, of me, for it is not after man;]

12 nor I took it of man, nor learned [neither I took it of man, neither learned], but by [the] revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For ye have heard my conversation sometime in the Jewry, that I pursued surpassingly the church of God [for over manner, or measure, I pursued the church of God], and fought against it.

14 And I profited in the Jewry above many of mine even-elders in my kindred, and was more abundantly a follower of my fathers' traditions [being more abundantly a lover, or follower, of my fathers' traditions].

15 But when it pleased him, that separated me [that parted me] from my mother's womb, and called by his grace,

16 to show his Son in me, that I should preach him among the heathen, at once I drew me not to flesh and blood [anon I accorded not to flesh and blood];

17 nor I came to Jerusalem [neither I came to Jerusalem] to the apostles, that were before me, but I went into Arabia, and again I turned again into Damascus.

18 And since three years after I came to Jerusalem, to see Peter, and I dwelled with him fifteen days; [Afterward after three years I came to Jerusalem, to see Peter, and dwelled with him fifteen days;]

19 but I saw none other of the apostles, but James, our Lord's brother [no but James, the brother of the Lord].

20 And these things which I write to you, lo! before God I lie not.

21 Afterward I came into the coasts [the parts] of Syria and Cilicia.

22 But I was unknown by face to the churches of Judaea, that were in Christ;

23 and they had only an hearing, that he that pursued us sometime, preacheth now the faith [now evangelizeth the faith], against which he fought sometime;

24 and in me they glorified God.

Footnotes

  1. Galatians 1:10 I council now to men, or to God? or I seek to please men? If I yet pleased to men, I were not the servant of Christ.

Paul rebukes them because they had fallen away from the gospel. He recounts his own life, emphasizes his office and apostleship, and declares himself to be equal with the high apostles.

Paul, an apostle not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and by God the Father who raised him from death, and all the brethren who are with me.

To the congregations of Galatia.

Grace be with you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from this present evil world according to the will of God our Father, to whom be praise for ever and ever. Amen.

I marvel that you are so soon turned away from him who called you in the grace of Christ, to another gospel – which is nothing other than that there are some who trouble you and intend to pervert the gospel of Christ. Nevertheless, even if we ourselves or an angel from heaven preach any gospel to you other than that which we have preached to you, hold him as accursed. As I said before, so I say now again: if anyone preaches any other thing to you than that which you have received, hold him as accursed. 10 Do I preach man’s doctrine, or God’s? Or do I go about to please men? If I sought to please men, I would not be the servant of Christ.

11 I tell you, brethren, that the gospel I preached was not after the manner of men. I neither received it from man, 12 nor was I taught it, but I received it by the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my conduct in time past, in the ways of the Jews – how beyond measure I persecuted the congregation of God, and ravaged it, 14 and prevailed in the law of the Jews above many of my companions who were of my own nation, and was a much more fervent maintainer of the precepts of the elders.

15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, 16 in order to declare his Son by me, to preach him among the heathen, I did not immediately commune of the matter with flesh and blood, 17 nor return to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but went my ways into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. 18 Then, after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and remained with him fifteen days. 19 I did not see any of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. 20 The things that I write, lo, God knows I do not speak untruly.

21 After that, I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 I was not personally known to the congregations of Judea that were in Christ, 23 but they only heard that he who persecuted them in time past, now preaches the faith that before he destroyed. 24 And they glorified God in my behalf.

The Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Galatians

1 Straight after the salutation, 6 He reprehendeth the Galatians for revolting, 9 from his Gospel, 15 which he received from God, 17 before he had communicated with any of the Apostles.

Paul [a]an Apostle (not [b]of men, neither by [c]man, (A)but by [d]Jesus Christ, and God the Father which hath raised him from the dead.)

And all the brethren which are with me unto the Churches of Galatia:

Grace be with you, and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

[e]Which gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us (B)from this present evil [f]world according to the will of God even our Father,

To whom be glory forever and ever, Amen.

[g]I marvel that ye are so soon [h]removed away unto another Gospel, from him that had called you in the grace of Christ,

[i]Which is not another Gospel, save that there be some which trouble you, and intend to [j]pervert the Gospel of Christ.

But though that we, or an Angel from heaven preach unto you otherwise than that which we have preached unto you, let him be [k]accursed.

As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach unto you otherwise than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

10 [l]For now preach I [m]man’s doctrine, or God’s? or go I about to please men? for if I should yet please men, I were not the servant of Christ.

11 (C)[n]Now I certify you, brethren, that the Gospel which was preached of me, was not after man.

12 For neither received I it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the [o]revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 [p]For ye have heard of my conversation in time past, in the Jewish religion, how that (D)I persecuted the Church of God extremely, and wasted it,

14 And profited in the Jewish religion above many of my companions of mine own nation, and was much more zealous of the [q]traditions of my fathers.

15 But when it pleased God (which had [r]separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace.)

16 To reveal his Son [s]in me, that I should preach him (E)among the Gentiles immediately, [t]I communicated not with [u]flesh and blood:

17 Neither came I again to Jerusalem to them which were Apostles before me, but I went into Arabia, and turned again unto Damascus.

18 Then after three years I came again to Jerusalem, to visit Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

19 And none other of the Apostles saw I, save James the Lord’s brother.

20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, I witness [v]before God, that I lie not.

21 After that, I went into the coasts of Syria and Cilicia: for I was unknown by face unto the Churches of Judea which were in Christ.

22 But they had heard only some say, He which persecuted us in time past, now preacheth the [w]faith which before he destroyed.

23 And they glorified God for me.

Footnotes

  1. Galatians 1:1 A salutation comprehending in few words, the sum of the Apostle’s doctrine, and also besides straightway from the beginning, showing the gravity meet for the authority of an Apostle, which he had to maintain against the false apostles.
  2. Galatians 1:1 He showeth who is the author of the minister generally: for herein the whole ministry agreeth, that whether they be Apostles, or Shepherds, or Doctors, they are appointed of God.
  3. Galatians 1:1 He toucheth the instrumental cause: for this is a peculiar prerogative to the Apostles, to be called immediately from Christ.
  4. Galatians 1:1 Christ no doubt is man, but he is God also, and head of the Church, and in this respect to be exempted out of the number of men.
  5. Galatians 1:4 The sum of the true Gospel is this, that Christ by his only offering, saveth us being chosen out from the world, by the free decree of God the Father.
  6. Galatians 1:4 Out of that [most] corrupt state which is without Christ.
  7. Galatians 1:6 The first part of the Epistle wherein he witnesseth that he is an Apostle, nothing inferior to those chief disciples of Christ, and wholly agreeing with them, whose names the false apostles did abuse. And he beginneth with chiding, reproving them of lightness for that they have ear so easily unto them which perverted them and drew them away to a new Gospel.
  8. Galatians 1:6 He useth the passive voice, to cast the fault upon the false apostles, and he useth the time that now is, to give them to understand, that it was not already done, but in doing.
  9. Galatians 1:7 He warneth them in time to remember that there are not many Gospels, and therefore whatsoever these false apostles pretend which had the Law, Moses and the Fathers in their mouths, yet they are in deed so many corruptions of the true Gospel, insomuch that he himself, yea, and the very Angels themselves, (and therefore much more these false apostles) ought to be holden accursed, if they go about to change the least iota that may be in the Gospel, that he delivered to them before.
  10. Galatians 1:7 For there is nothing more contrary to faith or free justification, than justification by the Law, or by our deserving.
  11. Galatians 1:8 See Rom. 9:3.
  12. Galatians 1:10 A confirmation taken both from the nature of the doctrine itself, and also from that manner which he useth in teaching: for neither saith he, did I teach those things which pleased men as these men do which put part of salvation in external things, and works of the Law, neither went I about to procure any man’s favor. And therefore the matter itself showeth that that doctrine which I delivered unto you, is heavenly.
  13. Galatians 1:10 He toucheth the false apostles who had nothing but men in their mouths, and he, though he would derogate nothing from the Apostles, preacheth God and not men.
  14. Galatians 1:11 A second argument to prove that this doctrine is heavenly, because he had it from heaven, from Jesus Christ himself, without any man’s help, wherein he excelleth them whom Christ taught here on earth after the manner of men.
  15. Galatians 1:12 This place is to be understood of an extraordinary revelation, for otherwise the Son alone revealed his Gospel by his Spirit, although by the ministry of men, which Paul shutteth out here.
  16. Galatians 1:13 He proveth that he was extraordinarily taught of Christ himself, by the history of his former life, which the Galatians themselves know well enough: for saith he, it is well known in what school I was brought up, even from a child, to wit, amongst the deadly enemies of the Gospel. And no man may cavil and say that I was a scholar of the Pharisees in name only and not in deed, no man is ignorant, how that I excelled in Pharisaism, and was suddenly made of a Pharisee, an Apostle of the Gentiles, so that I had no space to be instructed of men.
  17. Galatians 1:14 He calleth them the traditions of his Fathers, because he was not only a Pharisee himself, but also had a Pharisee to his father.
  18. Galatians 1:15 He speaketh of God’s everlasting predestination, whereby he appointed him to be an Apostle, whereof he maketh three degrees, the everlasting counsel of God, his appointing from his mother’s womb, and his calling: here is no mention at all, we see, of works foreseen.
  19. Galatians 1:16 To me, and this is a kind of speech which the Hebrews use, whereby this is given us to understand, that this gift cometh from God.
  20. Galatians 1:16 Because it might be objected, that indeed he was called of Christ in the way, but afterwards was instructed of the Apostles and others, whose names (as I said before) the false apostles abused to destroy his Apostleship, as though he delivered another Gospel than the true Apostles did, and as though he were not of their number, which are to be credited without exception: therefore Paul answereth, that he began straightway after his calling to preach the Gospel at Damascus and in Arabia, and was not from that time in Jerusalem but only fifteen days, where he saw only Peter and James, and afterwards, he began to teach in Syria and Cilicia, with the consent and approbation of the Churches of the Jews, which knew him only by name, so far off was it, that he was there instructed of men.
  21. Galatians 1:16 With any man in the world.
  22. Galatians 1:20 This is a kind of an oath.
  23. Galatians 1:22 The doctrine of faith.

Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) and all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14 and profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, 16 to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: 17 neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. 19 But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother. 20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. 21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; 22 and was unknown by face unto the churches of Judæa which were in Christ: 23 but they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. 24 And they glorified God in me.
