Therefore I bound for the Lord beseech you, that ye walk worthily in the calling, in which ye be called,

with all meekness and mildness, with patience supporting each other in charity [with patience supporting, or up-bearing, together in charity],

busy to keep unity of Spirit in the bond of peace.

One body and one Spirit, as ye be called in one hope of your calling;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

one God and Father of all, which is above all men, and by all things, and in us all.

He exhorts them to meekness and longsuffering, to love and peace. Everyone is to serve and edify the other with the gift that God has given him, to beware of strange doctrine, to lay aside the old life of greedy desires, and to walk in a new life.

I therefore, who am in bonds for the Lord’s sake, exhort you to walk worthy of the calling wherein you are called, in all humbleness of mind, and meekness and longsuffering, forbearing one another through love; and to be diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, being one body and one spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling. Let there be but one Lord, one faith, one baptism: one God and Father of all, who is above all, through all, and in you all.

These three last Chapters contain precepts of manners. 1 He exhorteth them to mutual love. 7 Sundry gifts are therefore bestowed of God, 16 that the Church may be built up. 18 He calleth them from the vanity of infidels, 25 from lying, 29 and from filthy talk.

I therefore, [a]being prisoner in the Lord, pray you that ye walk worthy of the [b]vocation whereunto ye are called,

[c]With all humbleness of mind, and meekness, with [d]long suffering, supporting one another through love,

[e]Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

[f]There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your vocation.

There is one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism.

One God and Father of all, which is [g]above all, and [h]through all, and [i]in you all.

Notas al pie

  1. Ephesians 4:1 Another part of the Epistle containing precepts of Christian life, the sum whereof is this, that every man behave himself as it is meet for so excellent grace of God.
  2. Ephesians 4:1 By this is meant the general calling of the faithful, which is this, to be holy, as our God is holy.
  3. Ephesians 4:2 Secondly, he commendeth meekness of the mind, which is shown forth by bearing one with another.
  4. Ephesians 4:2 See Matt. 18:25.
  5. Ephesians 4:3 Thirdly, he requireth perfect agreement, but yet such as is knit with the band of the holy Ghost.
  6. Ephesians 4:4 An argument of great weight, for an earnest entertaining of brotherly love and charity one with another, because we are made one body as it were of one God, and Father, by one Spirit, worshipping one Lord with one faith, and consecrated to him with one Baptism, and hope for one selfsame glory, whereunto we are called. Therefore whosoever breaketh charity, breaketh all these things asunder.
  7. Ephesians 4:6 Who only hath the chief authority over the Church.
  8. Ephesians 4:6 Who only poureth forth his providence, through all the members of the Church.
  9. Ephesians 4:6 Who only is joined together with us in Christ.

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
