Assay yourselves, if ye be in the faith; ye yourselves prove. Whether ye know not yourselves, for Christ Jesus is in you? but (it) happens ye be reprovable [no but peradventure, ye be reprovable].

But I hope, that ye know, that we be not reprovable.

And we pray the Lord, that ye do nothing of evil; not that we seem approved [not that we seem proved], but that ye do that that is good, and that we be as reprovable.

For we be able to do nothing against truth, but for the truth. [Forsooth we may do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.]

For we joy, when we be frail [when we be sick], but ye be mighty; and we pray this thing, your perfection.

10 Therefore I absent write these things, that I present do not harder, by the power, which the Lord gave to me into edification, and not into your destruction[a].

  1. 2 Corinthians 13:10 after the power, which the Lord gave to me into edification, and not into destruction

Prove yourselves, whether you are in the faith or not. Examine your own selves. Do you not know your own selves that Jesus Christ is in you? – unless you are castaways. I trust that you will realize that we are not castaways.

I desire before God that you do no evil – not that we should seem commendable, but that you should do that which is honourable. And let us be counted as uncommendable persons.

We can do nothing against the truth, only for the truth. We are glad when we are weak and you strong. This also we wish for: even that you were perfect. 10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest when I am present I must use sharpness, according to the power that the Lord has given me – to build up, and not to break down.

(A)[a]Prove yourselves whether ye are in the faith: examine yourselves: know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

[b]But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.

Now I pray unto God that ye do none evil, not that we should seem approved, but that ye should do that which is honest: though we be as [c]reprobates.

For we cannot do anything against the truth, but for the truth.

  1. 2 Corinthians 13:5 He confirmeth that which he spake of the virtue of God appearing in his ministry, and he gathereth by the mutual relation between the people’s faith and the minister’s preaching, that they must either reverence his Apostleship, upon whose doctrine their faith is grounded, or they must condemn themselves of infidelity, and must confess themselves not to be of Christ’s body.
  2. 2 Corinthians 13:6 He mitigateth that sharpness, trusting that they will show themselves towards their faithful Apostle, apt and willingly to be taught: adding this moreover, that he passeth not for his own fame and estimation, so that he may serve to their salvation, which is the only mark that he shooteth at.
