27 Why do you complain, Jacob?
Why do you say, Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord;
my cause is disregarded by my God”?(A)
28 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?(B)
The Lord is the everlasting(C) God,
the Creator(D) of the ends of the earth.(E)
He will not grow tired or weary,(F)
and his understanding no one can fathom.(G)
29 He gives strength(H) to the weary(I)

and young men(J) stumble and fall;(K)
31 but those who hope(L) in the Lord
will renew their strength.(M)
They will soar on wings like eagles;(N)
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.(O)
Isaiah 40:27-31
New English Translation
27 Why do you say, Jacob,
Why do you say, Israel,
“The Lord is not aware of what is happening to me;[a]
My God is not concerned with my vindication”?[b]
28 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is an eternal God,
the Creator of the whole earth.[c]
He does not get tired or weary;
there is no limit to his wisdom.[d]
29 He gives strength to those who are tired;
to the ones who lack power, he gives renewed energy.
30 Even youths get tired and weary;
even strong young men clumsily stumble.[e]
31 But those who wait for the Lord’s help[f] find renewed strength;
they rise up as if they had eagles’ wings,[g]
they run without growing weary,
they walk without getting tired.
Footnotes
- Isaiah 40:27 tn Heb “my way is hidden from the Lord” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).
- Isaiah 40:27 tn Heb “and from my God my justice passes away”; NRSV “my right is disregarded by my God.”
- Isaiah 40:28 tn Heb “the ends of the earth,” but this is a merism, where the earth’s extremities stand for its entirety, i.e., the extremities and everything in between them.
- Isaiah 40:28 sn Exiled Israel’s complaint (v. 27) implies that God might be limited in some way. Perhaps he, like so many of the pagan gods, has died. Or perhaps his jurisdiction is limited to Judah and does not include Babylon. Maybe he is unable to devise an adequate plan to rescue his people, or is unable to execute it. But v. 28 affirms that he is not limited temporally or spatially nor are his power and wisdom restricted in any way. He can and will deliver his people, if they respond in hopeful faith (v. 31a).
- Isaiah 40:30 tn Heb “stumbling they stumble.” The verbal idea is emphasized by the infinitive absolute.
- Isaiah 40:31 tn The word “help” in the phrase “for the Lord’s help” is supplied in the translation for clarification, as is the possessive on “Lord.”
- Isaiah 40:31 tn Heb “they rise up [on] wings like eagles” (TEV similar).
Isaiah 40:27-31
Young's Literal Translation
27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob? and speakest thou, O Israel? `My way hath been hid from Jehovah, And from my God my judgment passeth over.'
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? The God of the age -- Jehovah, Preparer of the ends of the earth, Is not wearied nor fatigued, There is no searching of His understanding.
29 He is giving power to the weary, And to those not strong He increaseth might.
30 Even youths are wearied and fatigued, And young men utterly stumble,
31 But those expecting Jehovah pass [to] power, They raise up the pinion as eagles, They run and are not fatigued, They go on and do not faint!

King James Version
27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
